frankie Posted August 18, 2015 Author Posted August 18, 2015 That's because they're all on my TBR pile. Haha, that's right, though! YAYYYY! I'm so, so proud of you, lovely!! Great news! Well done Sari! Onwards and upwards, don't let anything stand in your way! :) Thank you m'ladies! I'm so psyched! Although now I have to go and print out this form to fill in, and it looks like a really tricky one... Once I've sent it and they've received it at the uni, it'll take approximately 3 weeks to process I'm so over this waiting game!! Quote
chesilbeach Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Brilliant news! Well done, will you do anything to celebrate? Quote
Peacefield Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Congrats to you, Sari! All of your hard work has paid off I'll toast you with some cider the minute I get home tonight Quote
frankie Posted August 19, 2015 Author Posted August 19, 2015 Thanks everyone! Well done, will you do anything to celebrate? I don't know, I haven't had time to think about it... I guess I should, right? My friends have told me I should. One of them in particular keeps asking me about it. He's actually someone who's never finished his studies, and this summer he decided to go back and finish them, and he said that I inspired him. I feel like my studies have taken such a long time (others would've done 2-3 degrees in the same period of time), that I've been really ashamed about it for such a long time and haven't felt like there's any cause for celebration for finally having done what I ought to have done years and years ago... So I was just floored when my friend said that he was inspired by me. Congrats to you, Sari! All of your hard work has paid off I'll toast you with some cider the minute I get home tonight How was it? Darn good, I hope!! Quote
frankie Posted August 19, 2015 Author Posted August 19, 2015 I forgot to tell you guys yesterday that I went on a real shopping spree! I thought I'd buy myself something nice to celebrate the news. I went to Anttila outlet first, to see if they might have something I coveted (like a DVD box of The Office or something) but it seems that the only time they had a huge variety of DVDs there was when the store opened and they haven't gotten any new ones since. There's nothing but Emmerdale and Heartbeat DVDs there Nobody wants them! The Emmerdale ones date back from the dawn of time and so that would explain why no one's interested, I think, and even though I know people like Heartbeat (Mom loves it), it's shown on TV over here quite often and so nobody would need the DVDs. Nothing there, so I decided to go to the bookstore. I don't go there very often because I really shouldn't be buying any new books. There were, however, these really gorgeous little notebooks I've been fancying for a while, and yesterday I decided to buy them. There was two in one package, and it was only 2e. (Made in China... ... Should not support that sweatshop of a country... Should support local businesses... Will do so when am employed and have more money.... Consumer conscience of mine be quiet....) Then I took a look at the adult coloring books. I know they are pricey but I just wanted to have a look... They were all ranging from 12,95e ->. But alas! I found one book that was only 5,95e! I thought it was a sign.... I had to buy it! And it's made in Finland, hurrah! And the theme is the roaring 1930's and art deco... Then I went home and had lunch, and then I decided it was time for me to visit the charity shop on the other side of the tracks. It's really not that far away, but because it's on the other side, I get lazy when even thinking about going there However, there's a particular supermarket next to the charity shop, one that we don't have over this side, and they had ground beef and quark on sale, and I thought that was incentive enough. Two birds! So I went and donated a bag of clothes that has been hanging around in my room, getting in the way, for weeks now, and then I took a look at their books. Blasted shop! There was a cheap copy of Will I Ever Be Good Enough?: Healing the Daughters of Narcissistic Mothers by Karyl McBride which I've been wanting to read for ages (and no, my Mom's not a narcissist, I'm just into all things psychology as some of you know), and then there was a copy of Avioliittosimulaattori by Veera Nieminen which I read and loved last year. Had to get a copy of my own. The rest of the shopping spree consisted of buying ground beef, quark, vitamin C, shampoo, soap and a dishbrush but I'm sure you won't be fascinated by that Quote

willoyd Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Well done Frankie. Must be a wonderful sense of achievement, and thoroughly deserved by the sound of it. Quote
frankie Posted August 20, 2015 Author Posted August 20, 2015 Thanks you guys! It is pretty fabulous (although the stress of having to find an apartment and finding a job is taking away from it I have to sometimes tell myself to breathe and remember that I really did it, I'm graduating!!). Quote
Janet Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 I'm a bit late to the party, but congratulations. Quote

frankie Posted August 21, 2015 Author Posted August 21, 2015 (edited) #51. The Altogether Unexpected Disappearance of Atticus Craftsman by Mamen Sánchez The book cover: Atticus Craftsman never travels without a supply of Earl Grey and a favourite book. So when he is sent to shut down a failing literary magazine in Madrid, he packs both. A short Spanish jaunt later, he’ll be back in Kent, cup of tea and smoked-salmon sandwich in hand. But the five ladies who run the magazine have other ideas. They’ll do anything to keep the jobs they love and their cosy office together. Even if it involves hoodwinking Atticus with flashing eyes, the ghosts of literature past and a winding journey into the heart of Andalucía. With not the most efficient of detectives in hot pursuit, it’s only a matter of time before Atticus Craftsman either falls in love, disappears completely or – worst of all – runs out of Earl Grey. Thoughts: The title and the book cover caught my eye when I was browsing through the new acquired books on the library's website. Reserved a copy and started reading the book pretty soon after getting it from the library. I loved it It was a humorous tale with loads of literary references. Different cultures and traditions colliding. And I loved the set of characters! It's a rather short book, 298 pages long, and so the author couldn't get very deep into the characters, or at least as deep as I'd like. She did provide with a background to each character and they were all really fascinating in my opinion, but I guess I liked them so much that I would've wanted to read more I'm going to miss them. This was the perfect comfy read 4/5 Edited August 21, 2015 by frankie Quote
frankie Posted August 21, 2015 Author Posted August 21, 2015 (edited) I love the looks of that Art Deco coloring book, Sari! Very pretty It is, innit? Also, I have a question. What's 'quark?' I was absolutely certain that you and I have discussed quark before, so I had to go and do a little search... I searched for the word 'quark' and found nothing of relevance, and then thought maybe we used a different word for it. And sure enough, we've talked about it :D http://www.bookclubforum.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/4862-lets-study-languagescultures-with-frankie/?p=256928 Edit: I kept reading on and noticed you mentioned the Minnesota State Fair during the last two weeks of August, and coincidentally that's now! Are you going / are you there yet? Edited August 21, 2015 by frankie Quote
Peacefield Posted August 21, 2015 Posted August 21, 2015 Your memory is clearly better than mine! I totally forgot about that conversation, but thank you for reminding me what quark is (just wait until you hit 40, your memory is all downhill from there! ). The Fair starts next Thursday and runs through Labor Day, which is on 7 Sep this year. I'm so looking forward to those cheese curds and fried pickles. YUM! I forgot to say earlier that my celebratory Sari-College-Degree cider was very good Quote

I totally forgot about that conversation, but thank you for reminding me what quark is (just wait until you hit 40, your memory is all downhill from there! ). Oh but it was nothing to do with your memory being worse! I used a different word for it this time and it threw you off, because you didn't know what it was. I only remember it because there was talk about cheese and deep-frying and all things delicious but not so healthy... The Fair starts next Thursday and runs through Labor Day, which is on 7 Sep this year. I'm so looking forward to those cheese curds and fried pickles. YUM! You have to have an extra one in my honor! My mouth is actually watering now.... Darn you! I forgot to say earlier that my celebratory Sari-College-Degree cider was very good Sweet! Hey, we should bottle it and market it and sell it... Oh, wait... Quote

frankie Posted August 23, 2015 Author Posted August 23, 2015 (edited) #52. The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty From Amazon: Imagine your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret—something with the potential to destroy not only the life you have built together, but the lives of others as well. And then imagine that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive… Cecilia Fitzpatrick has achieved it all—she’s an incredibly successful businesswoman, a pillar of her small community, a devoted wife and mother. Her life is as orderly and spotless as her home. But that letter is about to change everything—and not just for her. Thoughs: I picked this book on a whim from the library one day earlier this week, thinking I might have it on my wishlist. It wasn't there, but it seemed just the kind of book that I'd like to read now, plus it's by an Australian author. One doesn't come across too many Australian authors so it's always a bonus! I got sucked into the novel pretty much right from the start. I was a bit perplexed when after 20 pages the narration shifted to a whole other person and I didn't see any connection. And then it happened again. Just when I'd gotten really intrigued by the character I was currently reading about! But you have to trust the author: of course there's some sort of connection, one way or another, in a rational or irrational way, and one just needs to carry on, like Jeeves... And so I read on. Soon enough I realized that it didn't really matter which character the chapter was focused on because I loved reading about them all. They were all interesting in their own ways. I think Moriarty's done a fine job spinning the yarn. Even though I've read some great books recently, this book was the first one in ages that I couldn't wait to read more of. I didn't wait until it was late and I had to go to bed (I do most of my reading in bed before I go to sleep for the night), but I would switch the computer off and go read the book in the park or the library. I started the book on Friday and finished it yesterday, and the book has 442 pages. That was a very quick read for me! Definitely looking forward to reading more of Moriarty's books! 4/5 Edited August 23, 2015 by frankie Quote
