  1. I used to fold the corners, but not for a long time. I now use a bookmark. I collect postcards and bookmarks, so usually use one of those. Sometimes a scrap of paper if my collection isn't handy. For my study books, where the bookmarks are always falling out, I put a paper clip on the postcard to keep it in.
  2. I finished two books last week. The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd and Animal Farm by George Orwell. Loved both of them, and I'm definitely going to read more by Sue Monk Kidd. I also plan to reread 1984. I first read it about 20 years ago.
  3. Good luck with the surgery Julie.
  4. Mostly here. And I've recently discovered Book Riot. Occasionally there'll be something good on there.
  5. I'll cool down you hot people up north. We've been freezing down here. -4C most of last week. Even in winter that's really cold for us. Very thick fog, too, which is not normal. It warmed up a little today, managed to reach 10C.
  6. Those dresses are gorgeous. I love the colour.
  7. I finished Just What Kind of Mother Are You? by Paula Daly. 4/5
  8. I finished Fatherland by Robert Harris the other day. I wish I'd read it sooner.
  9. I've read a couple of books recently that were set in Eastern Europe at the time of the fall of communism (late 80s to mid 90s ish). I really enjoyed them, and being a history buff, this sort of thing appeals to me. Does anyone know of any other books set around this time and area?
  10. I finished More Bitter Than Death by Camilla Grebe. I nearly gave up on this early on, but wanted to find out what happened. I wish I had given up. The story was good, the writing wasn't. It jumped around all over the place and it was hard to figure out what was going on.
  11. Congrats Emelee.
  12. Finished Just One Evil Act by Elizabeth George. Excellent book. Makes me want to reread the rest of the series again.
  13. I agree Julie. When I was a kid comics were considered bad, and I know kids at my schools were told off for reading them and told to read 'proper books.' That's changed now, and comics are accepted as books. I'd be happy if my son read comic books, as long as he's reading something.
  14. The only way my reading was monitored when I was a kid was my mum telling me to stop. I was always getting into trouble because I'd get so caught up in my book I wouldn't hear her calling me. As for my kids, my son doesn't read. He used to read a lot, until he was about 11. He's 17 now. My daughter is 15. She went through a period of not reading for the last three or four years and has just started reading again this year. I keep an eye on what books she's reading, but I don't censor them. I know parents who read everything their kids read before they're allowed to read it. I couldn't do that. For one thing, I'd never get my own books read. And my kids would immediately turn down something mum's read. I know we went to the library a lot when I was a kid, but I don't remember much about it. I can't remember if we were allowed to read adults books. I do remember they were on a completely different floor, so that did make them seem sort of off limits. At our library now we have different cards for children, teens, and adults. You can get any book on any card. Unless it's something with an age restriction like a movie or something, that's the only restriction I know of.
  15. Thanks Hayley. I'll pass that on to her. She's requested The Fault in Our Stars from the library, but probably wouldn't get it in time.
  16. Can anyone recommend a book for my daughter for a school assignment. I know there's plenty that would suit, but can't seem to think of anything. She needs a book about 'coping with the unpredictableness of life makes us stronger.' TIA Edit to add: She's 16, so YA or adult would be good.
  17. I hadn't seen the Hunger Games one, but I thought the 1984 protests were clever.
  18. Do Anna. It's very good. I'm going to have to see what other George Orwell's my library has. I'd only heard of 1984 and Animal Farm before I came to this site.
  19. Finished Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell. Very good read.
  20. Finished Sun Storm by Asa Larsson.
  21. Boondoggle - to do work of little or no practical value merely to keep or look busy.
  22. Finished Making sense of the troubles by David McVea and David McKittrick. Someone on here recommend it. Thank you whoever that was.
  23. Congratulations Emelee.
  24. Finished Fishing for stars by Bryce Courtenay. Another doorstopper by him, but well worth the effort.
  25. That's fantastic news. Congratulations.
