If I knew you were coming I'd have baked a cake...
Peacefield replied to Kell's topic in Food, Cooking & Recipes
Those sound yummy, Kell! I love baking, especially around the holidays, since goodies like that make excellent gifts . I've made scones before, but only the sweet kind with fruit. I will definitely have to try cheese now! I also like to make biscotti (good for dunking in coffee you know :eek2:), ginger snaps and short bread cookies. I make baklava at the holidays, and I love the smell of my kitchen when I make banana muffins. I found a recipe that has crumbled brown sugar and butter sprinkled on the top and ohmygosh those are so good! -
Just finished grilling up some chicken am waiting on the asparagus in the steamer :eek2:.

What's Your Book Activity Today? - Take 6!

It makes a lot of sense hearing that she was a doctor, Lexie, since her writing is pretty medically-detailed . I'll take a browse of her other books and see which might appeal to me, since sometimes I'm just in the mood for some good old suspense. Hopefully my only book activity today won't primarily consist of packing them in boxes! I'll be sure to squeeze in a chapter or two before bed tonight . -

I have about 100 pages left of The Bone Garden and will be sad to see it end. It is perhaps a teeny bit on the gruesome side, but I've been skimming over the unpleasant paragraphs . I guess it's bound to happen when you're dealing with surgical students in the 1830's, but ewww. Can other Tess Gerritsen fans here tell me if all of her books lean to the gory side? I don't mind some, but I'm a little wary of such intimate details . -
Probably, Ned! You can't get catchy-er than some Lalo Schifrin tune stuck in your head!

I know what you mean about Borders, Kylie. They've raised their prices here too, and the only time I actually go there is when I get coupons like this! That's too bad they don't go much above 20% there, and you're right, it's not worth it! -

Catwoman, The Bone Garden is my first Gerritsen. I've had The Surgeon recommended to me by some of the fine folk on here so I will definitely make that my next one by her. I finally just got home so am hoping to squeeze in a chapter yet tonight. I did however get an email coupon from Borders today for 40% off so I'm heading over there after work tomorrow . -

How are you liking Empire Falls, Blithe? I really love Russo's writing style and have often meant to pick up others by him. I'm glad to hear praise for The Italian Secretary, SueK! Have you read anything else by Carr? He is such a talented author and I love the two of his I've read. I've often wondered what he's been up to lately, since a few years ago I heard he was ill. I really hope he hasn't stopped writing. I got a little farther in The Bone Garden last night, in between watching baseball. I will indeed be looking for more works by Tess Gerritsen to read in the future . -

Seeing all this talk of Sherlock Holmes reminds me that Caleb Carr wrote a novel not too long ago called The Italian Secretary: A Further Adventure of Sherlock Holmes. I've been meaning to look for this one next time I'm at the used book shop. Has anyone here read it? I love Carr's The Alienist and Angel of Darkness and have always meant to read something else of his. -
Welcome, Northernnutter! Glad you found us and joined up .

I hope you lost mojo folk get it back soon! I read just a few pages last night since I was so consumed with the baseball game, but am now officially halfway through The Bone Garden. Loving it! -
I don't really watch too much reality TV, but I do like Big Brother and sometimes you might catch me watching The Hills reruns on MTV . Oh, and if you consider Extreme Home Makeover a reality show, count me in!

Glad you're enjoying Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, cosychair. I've had this one on my shelf in my TBR pile for some time and hopefully I'll get to it one of these days. I saw you read The Secret History last year. What did you think of it? It's one of my favorites, and IMO, so much better than Tartt's second attempt.

Has anyone heard anything about or read Audrey's Door by Sara Langan? Matthew Pearl gave praise for it today on his Facebook page so that caught my eye.

I'm up to chapter 16 (page 205) now in The Bone Garden. I read quite a bit yesterday and just a few pages today since I got home late and now all my attention is on the NFL game on TV.... I'm loving it though, and am so glad to read more of Oliver Wendell Holmes. It reminds me of reading the Dante Club . All this early 1800's Boston/Cambridge is SO lovely! Oh, and glad you are liking Ghostwalk, Scarlette! It was quite an interesting read and I'm so glad I read it . -
Niiicccee, Gyre! I like .

Finished off the last of the babaghanoush and flatbread, plus had some yummy grilled chicken . Popcorn later!

I have the Starsky and Hutch theme in my mobile as a ringtone, Ned. My best friend is a gigantic fan so whenever she calls me I hear that tune going off in my bag .

Up to chapter 12 (page 157) of The Bone Garden so far, and can't put it down! If not for baseball distracting me on the TV I'd probably be a lot farther . -
Hey there and welcome to BCF, Sara! Glad to have you here . Do you have any favorite mystery authors? I'm a big fan of the genre as well.

I haven't posted in this thread because for the life of me I can't think of a book I hated over a film! I've seen both Bridget Jones films but never read the book. I both read and saw the Jane Austen Book Club and was just 'meh' over both of them. I could say that the Twilight film(s) are better than the books, but there's still a little part of me that has a soft spot for the books only because I've read them so many times. Hmmm, the only thing I can offer is that 2 short stories of Stephen King's, The Body and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, were both good, but the films were better only because they elaborated on the stories more. Sorry, that's all I've got!

Up to page 64 in The Bone Garden so hopefully will get lots more in this weekend. It's quite interesting though. I love the going back and forth between present-day Boston and 1830's Boston; excellent reading so far! -
Congrats, Charm!! Way to go on your challenge .

So this is how a marriage ends, thought Julia Hamill as she rammed the shovel into the soil. The Bone Garden by Tess Gerritsen

What have you been watching at the cinema? (Cont..)
Peacefield replied to Lilywhite's topic in Music / TV / Films
I did end up seeing It Might Get Loud today and it was excellent!! It was so cool to see the likes of Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White all up on screen jamming away the hours. It was a nice mix of biography of each of the guys, their specific guitar styles, the guitars they use and how they ended up where they are musically. It was so neat to see these guys who are from different generations still be able to connect through the beauty of their music. I could watch any good guitarist, especially these three, for hours on end and I wouldn't get bored. I highly recommend if anyone is thinking of seeing this one .
