  1. Here are a few from a most-loved book of mine entitled The Art Spirit by Robert Henri: Your painting is the marking of your progression into nature, a sensation of something you see way beyond the two pretty colors over there. Don't stop to paint the material, but push on to give the spirit. All real works of art look as though they were done in joy. The object isn't to make art, it's to be in that wonderful state which makes art inevitable.
  2. I'm glad to hear you liked The Dante Club, Fi, and that you have The Last Dickens on order! They are both amoung my favorites and I think Matthew Pearl is an amazing author. I did love Poe Shadow too, just not as much . He's been through town here a couple of times and is a very genuine and nice person as well. He signed my Dante Club book "see you in hell!"
  3. I see a dinner of popcorn, cheese & crackers and pickles in my future! Good thing it's payday tomorrow!
  4. Thanks for the deets on all the Underworld films, ladies! Can't wait to see the rest of them. Fi, I don't understand it either. She tried reading the first book and said it just moved too slow for her, plus B annoyed her to no end so she didn't even finish it. Then when she watched the film with me she just made fun of it. Oh well, what can you do? She likes a lot of suspense/action in her books, plus she is a die-hard Lestat fan and thinks they should all be like him. Oh, I watched the end of the live Halloween Ghost Hunters special last night, then watched the bonus footage on my Bottle Rocket DVD. The Wilson bros always make me laugh .
  5. Oooh he's in it a lot?! That does it then, I might have to find a box set for myself now . I'd like to see Angels & Demons, Charm. It seems like it's been a lot time since I've seen Ewan McGregor in anything. Fi, my friend does have excellent taste, except for the fact that she really dislikes a certain film and book series we all can't get enough of. I know, it's really hard to fathom isn't it?!
  6. Ditto to what Chrissy said! And just think, after you finish with Thursday Next you can read Fforde's 'Nursery Crime' series and then his new one 'Shades of Grey!'
  7. Yes! Silently and fully appreciating the pretty that is RP . I will think of all you guys when I'm seeing it for the first time way over here . And every time thereafter for that matter!
  8. Oh excellent, Fi! I have a good friend who loves all things Sci-Fi who lent me the first Underworld movie, so hopefully she'll have the rest of them . I think Lucian was probably my fave character in that film. She's also the one to introduce me to Buffy and Angel so I owe her lots!
  9. It wasn't too hard to get you to come over to the dark side, was it Charm?! I shed many tears of joy when we get new converts, as you can probably attest! I wish I could see NM with you guys! It would be so much fun...
  10. I saw one Underworld movie, Fi, and I think it was the first one. I'm a BIG fan of Michael Sheen though (Lucian) - is he in the Rise of the Lycans?
  11. The Virgin Blue is the one Chevalier that I've not yet read Mexicola but I do have it I think. I loved Lady and the Unicorn though, it was so interesting to read about tapestry making! I loved it . Have you read anything by Susan Vreeland? I enjoy her very much, and her 'Girl in Hyacinth Blue' reminds me of Chevalier.
  12. We have Cookie Monster too . Love him! Oh, I forgot to ask this yesterday, but were the same folks who did Wallace and Gromit also the peeps who made the short film 'Creature Comforts?' I could watch that over and over again.
  13. Watch out, Libri, if you enjoy The Eyre Affair you might be off on finding the following books of the Thursday Next series! They're addictive for sure .
  14. I love Tracy Chevalier, Mexicola . Do you have a favorite of hers? Mine would definitely be 'The Lady in the Unicorn' followed very closely by 'Girl with a Pearl Earring.' I had a bit of a disappointment for some reason with 'Burning Bright' but am still looking forward to her new one that you mentioned .
  15. Hello and welcome to BCF, Marty! Hope you like it here .
  16. Peacefield

    Hello!

Hey there and welcome to BCF, Perky! I want to read that book you're currently reading and am glad to hear you like it. Have you read 'The Lost Book of Salem' by Rebecca Howe? It also deals with the Salem witches .
  17. I'm sorry about your mojo, Charm! Annoyances like that should be few and far between. I hope it comes back swiftly! I haven't read The Color of Magic Libri, but I am a big Fforde fan so I will tell you that you can't go wrong with The Eyre Affair . I managed to only squeeze in a couple of pages from Stolen last night before falling asleep. Hopefully I'll get more in since my friend has just lent me Brown's The Lost Symbol and I'm anxious to read it and get it back to her.
  18. This is funny, because the Google page in the States today doesn't have Wallace and Gromit, but instead it has Big Bird's legs, since it's the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street . Is it an anniversary of W&G too? I grew up watching Sesame Street in the 70's and have such fond memories. I still watch some of the old vids on YouTube when I need a chuckle.
  19. Excellent idea, BookJumper! It's inevitable, right? Being in the same exact spot where a genius once worked and lived and created, the talent is bound to rub off on you!
  20. Excellent review of Eclipse, Catwoman! I agree with you on the Jacob part and the tent scene, and although Bella gets on my nerves sometimes, I don't seem to mind her as much as Jacob. I'm anxiously awaiting a couple of *key* scenes from the book to be translated onto screen . So when are you going to start Breaking Dawn?!
  21. That sounds very intriguing, BookJumper! I loved The Thirteenth Tale . I'm anxiously awaiting anything else by Setterfield.
  22. I love Nick Hornby's writing, Inver. How were Carey Mulligan and Alfred Molina in it? I think it opened up here in the US in limited release a couple weeks ago, so hopefully that means it's out in theatres by me now .
  23. Has it fallen off the radar because you've been ill Noll or because it just isn't grabbing you? Sad face .
  24. Oooh I'm glad to hear you liked it, Inver! I would like to see that film.
  25. Me too, Mexicola! Coen bros are amoung my favorites for sure . I could never hate you, Lexie! I guess I can see why 'Being John Malkovich' wouldn't appeal to everyone, but I love odd films like this. I do also like Malkovich and John Cusack, so it was a win-win for me. Can ask you guys why you didn't like the film?
