  1. I'd like to know what people thought of this as well as it's on my book pile.
  2. Unfortunately i think that's the case for a lot of people. I studied Midsummer Night's Dream for my O level & it was torture, we did the play to death, it wasn't till i saw a production of it at the theatre that i really appreciated how good it is. Far from the Madding Crowd Thomas Hardy was another one that i didn't enjoy at school but became one of my favourites when i read it as an adult. However, i do remember reading & enjoying Lord of the Flies & Smith by Leon Garfield in my English class.
  3. I read this and enjoyed it, i liked the idea of meeting 5 people in heaven who would help you look at your life in a different way i thought that would be something to look forward to
  4. Hi Clare, i enjoyed The Shadow of the Wind as well & i've got The Angels Game on my book pile as well.

    Hi Becki & welcome:)
  6. I don't think i'm going to bother with it, if i like the books then i'm going to wish i'd read the unabridged versions instead so i'll send it on it's way
  7. Smoked Haddock Linguine with Spinach & Cherry tomatoes, it was a recipe from a magazine & looked better in the picture than it tasted.
  8. I've got one of those RD 4 books in 1, i stupidly didn't realise when i bought it that the books are actually condensed versions. Has anyone read one of these & if so are they any good or should i consign it to the charity bag?
  9. Fabulous
  10. I read whenever i can fit it in, so it can be while i'm stirring the dinner in the kitchen or sitting on the bus when the children are occupied watching a TV programme but i always try to read at least 50 pages a day otherwise i find if i put a book down for too long i can lose interest in it.
  11. In that case i'll move it nearer the top of the pile I'm over halfway through The Rendezvous it's a long time since i've read a book of short stories & i'm enjoying it so far. My book buying continues apace, another charity shop visit & i came home with Cutting for Stone Abraham Verghese Quicksilver Neal Stephenson Charlotte Gray Sebastian Faulks
  12. I disliked it mainly because i despised Lear so much, his foolishness & vanity i found hard to stomach, his descent into madness tiresome. Although Goneril & Regan are almost like pantomime baddies i found them the most interesting characters in the whole play. Othello is one of my favourites because even though like Lear he is flawed you have sympathy for him , i'm sure most people have experienced jealously & insecurity at some point in their lives. So i guess what i'm saying is whereas i could sympathise with Othello I could find nothing in my heart but contempt for Lear.
  13. Curses i hate to let a good book get away
  14. Not one of my favourites i'm afraid.
  15. I was quite young when i read 1984 & although i thought it was a good book i did find it depressing. Perhaps i'll reread it to see if i feel differently about it now i'm older.
  16. I never thought of looking at Amazon for bookmarks:)
  17. I was wondering the same as i have it on my TBR pile & i don't want to see the movie till i've read it.
  18. I saw the Historian in a charity shop the other day & didn't buy it Looks like i'll have to go back & see if it's still there.
  19. thank you Thanks, don't think anyone would do my job,no pay & rubbish hours but i do get time off to come on here which is a bonus
  20. I love the idea of a family outing to the bookstore but i must admit i do see bookshop browsing as me time I guess that means that some book readers are born while others are created - nature & nurture and all that
  21. My eldest son is 17 & is more interested in football & XBox at the moment but he does buy the NME so i guess that counts as reading
  22. Okay if we're choosing our own worlds i want to be an Umpah Lumpah in Willie Wonka's chocolate factory
  23. Just one for me as i like to give every book my full concentration.
  24. Good to read that lots of parents inspired you all. I'm hoping that because i've read to all my children (still reading to the younger ones) they'll be life long readers themselves.
  25. Your welcome.
