I went directly to "connections" and located my normal ISP from all the options, but it would not let me connect to it. When I went to the control panel it had installed T mobile as my default. I had to delete this and put in manually my required ISP and the password. I suspect your mum might have to do the same.

@ Athena: I will check those articles out thank you. @ Michelle: I do have automatic upgrades but I thought for something of this magnitude they would need my permission. I have been having the "reminders" pop ups for ages but i always just got rid of them and never said yes.

I am as mad as a bee in a bottle. Last night I turned my computer on and went to have a bath. I came out 15 minutes later and my laptop was upgrading itself to Windows10. I never authorized it to do this or clicked anything to ask for it, ever. I couldn't stop it. It took about 2 hours. Everything is different. It has taken me an hour this morning just to reconnect to the internet, it wouldn't at first allow me to use the ISP network that I pay for! It has all sorts of defaults and intrusive apps that try to push me certain ways. I have disabled loads of crap so far. Everything is different. I don't even know how to drag and drop from one window to another. I can't get two folders to be open at the same time.

Looking for mind blowing sci-fi book

Jack Vance -
I don't think I have ever got that far into one and not finished. I usually abandon a bad book much earlier. So Wow that must be some dull book. Is it the characters you lost interest in?

I trudged through Meek's Cutoff. I was unsatisfied by the highly ambiguous ending , but going by reviews I see that everybody is. I suspect I will trade this one in, not because it is not a good film in some ways, but because it is one of those films that now I have seen it I will always know the ending and there is never a need to watch it again.

It's interesting I have found references to two Thomas Calverts, alive at the same time both quakers, one born in Ireland in 1617 and the other, who is definitely the writer of your book, reputed to be born in York....the Irish born Calvert is a branch of the same family. There is also mixed up in this Giles Calvert, London Quaker bookbinder and seller, who's sister Martha Simmonds was a major figure in the Quaker movement (she was accused of witchcraft etc). She married Thomas Simmonds who took over Giles Calverts publishing work when he was imprisoned around then. There is no doubt that all these Calverts knew each other and may have been related. !656 was an important year because it was when the first Quakers arrived in America. Your relative may be one of these? The first Thomas Calvert I mention above was brought over by his son and died in Delaware in 1685.

I think you are probably right that it may be of the first imprint, the changes in spelling are a big clue. You really need to get it looked at by an expert. The 57 is intriguing. The print runs were probably not huge but books were not always sold ready bound as they are today. I have another theory about the 57. I am guessing that the book was taken to America by a group of Quaker pilgrim settlers , who were a close knit community, and in preparation for the journey, as a gift the books may have been given out one each and numbered. I have been to old churches here in the UK where the prayer books and song books are numbered the same way. But I am only guessing after all.

I saw The Homesman a different kind of western with Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Sfiddle. It was very poignant and sad. Edit: Lol the automatic naughty word correction has changed the actress's name. It is not Hilary Sfiddle but Hilary S-W-A-N-K.

Actors/actresses make indie films when their careers are on the way up or when they are on the way down.

Glad you are enjoying it again Madeleine!. I think that JE highlights a very big problem that real women had in those days- They could not date and try a few different men on for size. I agree St John Rivers was completely detestable, and compared to him Rochester is the better of the two, but really neither of them were who she needed to be with.

Welcome back dtrpath! I remember discussing book stuff with you a few times, so we must have read some of the same books.

Once Upon A Time In The West. I liked the story but didn't like the bad guy Henry Fonda, closely followed by not liking the good guy Charles Bronson either, who was almost as wooden and lifeless as Fonda. Fonda got a bit less rigid as the film went on but I felt let down by both their performances. Claudia Cardinale and Jason Robards were both excellent though. This was supposed to be Sergio Leone's masterpiece. The film was a bit of a fantasy, but took itself too seriously: for me it doesn't come up to the level of The Good The Bad And The Ugly.

Has anybody read the book of this by Deborah Moggach? It looks a bit interesting and it has Christoph Waltz, who I like, but on the downside it has Cara Delevigne, who I can't stand

Looking forward to this one too! Mark Strong is great I saw him once on the London tube

Persuasion, the Sally Hawkins version. It was OK but nothing to write home about

I think it would be good if it wasn't a girl this time. Just a random thought. It might make them avoid the tired romantic plotlines they keep falling into.
