kimble, everybody is entitled to an opinion and all opinions are as valid as any other. Personally I think war is the opposite of civilization. To be blunt, I think your last statement was insulting to woolf woolf; you don't know anything of her thought processes, or what she may have read or even experienced..

I just finished watching a BBC four-parter from 2001 called The Way We Live Now. It was was superb. From the novel by Anthony Trollope.

My friend at work has been talking about this. It didn't appeal to me, but he likes things like this. He also likes the Punisher comics and concept, which I don't understand the appeal of at all. We have had high metaphysical conversations about it: I say that the character of the Punisher fits exactly the classical concept of the Flawed Anti-Hero of literature, who is damaged beyond redemption and, by doing wrong, will eventually destroy himself; he disagrees and thinks the character is noble. Sorry to digress Athena!

Hi Kimble, welcome! I have read a few military history books and memoirs. One of my favourites was The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer about a German soldier on the Russian Front. I also enjoyed a couple of books by Robert Leckie about Guadalcanal and the Pacific campaign.

I caught the first episode of repeats of The Pallisers, a BBC series from 1974. It looked great! Must get this on DVD.

Protectionism! You could always pop across the channel and buy one in England, they sell them in supermarkets. You could stock up on our great English wines too haha Oh Project Gutenberg is not a software program like Calibre it is a website. They have been converting books to ebook for years for free.

Hi Needle, That's so great that you are throwing yourself into a challenge! Of the books you have chosen so far, I have read True Grit, 1984 and Brave New World. , which are all excellent. I look forward to reading your reviews on some of your other choices, which I haven't heard of.

Hi Needle, I haven't read Room, but the trailer totally put me off both film and the book, because it basically gave the whole plot away! I don't know why film distribution companies do that... About your reading choices, being on this forum really expands your reading horizons. One year I did a genre challenge where I read 24 books all of different genres! That was fun. These days I don't work so hard. Do you have a TBR (To Be Read) pile? Mine is relatively small compared to some here but i have enough books to last me 5 years without buying any more.

I third the basic Kindle. No bells and whistles. I don't need the WiFi. I don't really need to read in the dark either. Its a relatively small initial outlay but for me, as I read a lot of period books and classics which are free, i can have a wealth of reading matter for nothing extra. Why, everybody should have a basic Kindle just as a back up and for holidays.... oh yeah and the battery lasts for a couple of weeks between charges...

Of Mice And Men 4/5 John Steinbeck This was SUCH a neat little story. Everything in there for a reason and no padding. I could see the ending coming from about half way through, but that didn't matter a jot and doesn't take anything away from the beautiful crafting of the whole thing. I understand why this is such a popular book for school curriculums.

I have caught a couple of episodes of Siblings on TV and found it really funny.

Sounds like Emma Stone shouldn't have bothered either! Still, I guess she got paid a lot...

I just got back from the cinema seeing Daddy's Home. Not a huge fan of Will Farrell, but this film was quite thoughtful for a comedy and didn't end up resorting to violence like many seem to.

It was really interesting Jessi- never dull.

It is certainly bleak. The oppressive weather is another plot device and almost a character in itself.
