  1. Although I am not a big King fan, I had not even heard of this one! That's a great idea putting up the Romanian cover. Excellent name for your book blog, by the way.
  2. Can't wait to see The Martian. Afterwards I might read the book.
  3. Got a little bit interested in the American Civil War. Got hold of the DVD of Gettysburg which is over 4 hours long. Saw it last night. The whole film is just about 3 days (plus the day before the battle) of this one major important battle in 1863. I liked it. All the events are well explained as they unfold and from reviews I have read there is a high degree of historical accuracy in both the events and the characters. Some awesome Victorian beards on show but if I was awarding a prize for best beard it would go to Tom Berenger who played the Confederate (Grey) General Longstreet. There is much to like in this film. It shows the motivations and points of view on both sides in clever little scenes of dialogue which I enjoyed just as much as the battle scenes. That's an important part of a film about a civil war. Most war films just showcase one side in a lopsided simplified way. Especially it illustrates that for the South the secession was not just about slavery but political and economic issues. There is also a scene where the Union soldiers rescue an escaped slave found near the battlefield. For most of the Northern soldiers this is the very first black man they have ever seen and they look at him curiously.

    *Waves*

Saw one of your other posts but thought I would say welcome here too. 30-35 books is not a bad yearly score at all. I work with people who literally don't read one book a year. To me that's like insane. I am in Warwickshire too, Rugby. It is a pain when you want a day out at the seaside, it is miles in every direction.
  5. Didn't see her yesterday but today she came in and seeked me out to give me a book. I have chosen the book I wish to reciprocate with but I cannot find my copy at the moment.
  6. I thought so too Andrea ; I did think of telling her about BCF but it was only a first conversation so I didn't like to push it.
  7. I am putting this in my reading blog rather than my New Life thread because it is all about reading....yesterday I happened to be working with an Indian agency woman who I had seen about for ages but never talked to..in the course of conversation (she has only been here two years and wanted to talk to improve her English) it came out that she is a HUGE reader! Not only that but she reads SCIENCE FICTION!! She reads in English, Hindi and Gujerati. When she came to England she could not bear to part with her most precious books , which weighed 600kg, so had to pay to have them shipped over from India. Anybody who can't be parted from over half a ton of books is OK by me.....I asked her why not get a kindle but she was like Oh no...she likes the feel of a real book. She also says she buys books almost every time she goes out....can't pass a bookshop....and she has about 1000 books at home waiting to be read. She was almost apologetic about that but I said it is quite normal... I told her we call that the TBR pile. She is bringing me a book in today and I must find one for her from my shelf...I am thinking of Margaret Atwood.
  8. "Looking for some old faces as well as new.." I also have an old face if this helps
  9. I have heard that but never managed to catch it yet. I did enjoy the US remake though; watching DiCaprio slowly cracking under the strain was jolly good acting .

    Jogging Diary

A lion or a wild boar would be dangerous. Mice and pigeons don't really cut it. Woman up!
  11. I don't really know what to think. As a kid I enjoyed books by Andre Norton, and as I got older I read every SF book that came to hand, including Anne Macaffrey, (not her fantasy stuff though) Joanna Russ and Ursula K Leguin, and Margaret Atwood. Only recently I discovered Sheri S. Tepper. On the male side I really liked Roger Zelaney, Jack Vance, JG Ballard, Frank Herbert, Samuel R .Delaney, and Michael Moorcock. I never differentiated between them. If I liked an author's style I would look for more. I think its a shame whenever politics of any stripe has to poke it's head into somewhere it needn't.
  12. Thanks Bobblybear, Athena and Anna! Many thanks for looking in on my blog. I don't update often enough these days..
  13. That seems radical having to move job though! Unless you are not really too bothered about the place of course.
  14. Minority Report is OK. I am just not keen on Tom Cruise.
  15. Bit behind on my reviews. Need to catch up. Got a great haul this morning.. walked into a charity shop and somebody had just dumped a whole load of Frank Herbert 60's SF paperbacks in pristine condition. Many of the titles I hadn't heard of. I ignored Dune and the sequels and picked out 15 others. I got all 15 for £3.
  16. Minority Report and a cult SF film called Cypher. I bought this one because I enjoyed another cult film by the same director, Cube. Cypher was really excellent. My 17 and 18 year olds also thought it was cool.
  17. The kids forced me to watch Big Hero 6. It was actually very good.

    Hello

Welcome Luv2read ! You came to the right place we love readers here....
  19. A new Book Blog! Always like to read reviews and opinions. Great stuff!
  20. Welcome Alice! I am happy to meet another Jack Vance fan.
  21. Dipping your toe into BCF can really change the way you think about reading and books. I remember it really did for me. I discovered loads of new authors. I am ashamed now that some famous authors I was completely ignorant of. But the great thing is there is no right or wrong. It's your own personal reading journey. But there will always be someone here who will have read the same book
