Welcome David! What sort of books do you like to read?

Has anyone here read the book Submission by that French bloke? It is out in an English translation since September.

I was sort of enjoying it but I left it to read some other things.....will get back to it soon

Rewatched Willow. Was good to see it again after many years but the whole film is a bit flat unfortunately story-wise. I did like that they used real dwarves and that they are real personalities and heroes and not figures of fun or to add colour. The queen's dogs are funny they look like Dennis The Menaces' dog Gnasher.

I saw Kingsman. it was hilarious in a few places (Colin Firth going berzerk in the church) but I didn't like that everything was always resolved by violence, and the general message that chaviness was clever and cool. Also saw Appaloosa which was a thoughtful western.

I am reading Wuthering Heights right now!

The short book that springs to mind is Girl Meets Boy by Ali Smith. I haven't checked if it's on kindle but it if its I doubt it will be free

A robot film called Automata.

Caught a couple of episodes of Asian Provocateur. It's a documentary series about a Sri Lankan guy who is born in UK and is totally English..he is sent back to Sri Lanka by his mum to rediscover his roots. He stays with his various Aunties and Uncles who are characters in themselves which makes for hilarious situations. Forget Karl Pilkington, this is really very funny.

Science Fiction: Jack Vance fits neatly into the category of Space Opera, his books are often called "Planetary Romance". He has written many trilogies and series. My favourites are : The Planet Of Adventure series (4 books) Cadwal Chronicles series (3 books) The Alastor Cluster series (3 books) (more of a collection; the stories are not linked but share a central common idea) The Demon Princes series (5 books) Couple I am not so fond of: Durdane trilogy Big Planet series He has also written many excellent one-off novels, but you insisted that they must be series, so I must discount those. How much I rate Vance is illustrated by the fact that I came across my first Vance novel as a teen and spent years reading almost everything he wrote (around 100 books). Now I am collecting and reading them all again.

Just a bit of lateral thinking: could John Pierce have been MP for Chester? that would not have precluded him being a book seller as well....the NP could be an 18th century typo...

I would suggest carry on reading it may become clear when reiterated later another way.

Good mix there eyesee. I have the two Thomas Hardys on my kindle TBR and I started 11.22.63 some while back but left it for something more exciting at the time- it seemed to be taking ages to get to the point. I wasn't really interested in all that Kennedy stuff, I only wanted to read the time travel elements .

The Naked Prey! 60's film starring and directed by Cornell Wilde. I saw this once on TV when I was a teenager and it made a lasting impression. Although I looked out for it ever afterwards it was never on TV again. I managed to get a Spanish DVD that plays in the original English. It is still good. I believe Mel Gibson must have used this as inspiration for Apocalypto.

I just found out today about the new Macbeth film with Michael Fassbender, who can do no wrong in anything he is involved in, in my opinion .
