  1. I watched the Goosebumps movie with the kids. Jack Black was quite restrained in it and I enjoyed it.
  2. Well I'm not a mod but the admins usually only need a light touch here. The big taboo is when somebody is not genuine like an obvious sock puppet trying to use the forum for marketing purposes. If it's a genuine request for a book you can bet there is always someone here who will read the same genre who can help. We are all book people first
  3. Thanks chaliepud! I'm glad it wasn't just me then. I loved Shadow Of The Wind and The Angel's Game though.
  4. bookishnerd, I just had a thought, you may enjoy the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovitch. I have read up to number 9 in the series. They are not directly erotica, but they are adult themed and have a likeable heroine who if I remember usually has sex at least once in each book. She is also conflicted between two different blokes. They are good quick read fillers for when you are in between more heavy books. They are sequential so you should start at number 1. And no shapeshifting werewolves or vampires in sight.
  5. Ah it is no trouble she likes to talk about books. I won't see her until wednesday though
  6. I know a reading woman at work who told me she reads a lot of erotica so I could ask her. I hadn't heard of any of the authors or titles you mentioned, sorry. I could recommend Jack Vance though if you fancied any good SF/fantasy? His Lyonesse trilogy was actually quoted as being one of the Game Of Thrones influences, and a couple of names from it are even used in GOT.
  7. The Midnight Palace 1/5 Carlos Ruiz Zafon This one has been on my bookshelf for ages. I did not realise it was a YA novel. I am afraid it didn't grab me at all. I kept imagining the evil character as the cartoon Jafar the sorcerer in the Disney version of Alladin. The ending was disappointing but I had lost interest long before the end anyway.
  8. Yes there are some very quirky books that turn up sometimes.
  9. Love that film! The one with Lena Heady and Karl Urban?
  10. Haha that says a lot about celebrity IQ levels..
  11. I read it some time back but I am surprised you found it a bit long. I remembered it being quite short. Glad you enjoyed it though.
  12. Victorian Slum on BBC2 and The Apprentice.
  13. The Passenger 5/5 Lisa Lutz I picked this one up at work on the big table where everyone dumps books they don't want. It's not my usual thing as it is set in America in the here and now but it was fantastic! I couldn't put it down and had to read it all in one day. Just when you think you know where the story is headed it veers in another direction at a breakneck pace. One of the best things is ...ok I'm not going to tell you! It's too much of a spoiler. But I have to give this five out of five and recommend it without reservation.
  14. Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children. It was entertaining and the kids enjoyed it so it was a success. Eva Green was good as I thought she would be. Samuel L Jackson just seems to play Samuel L Jackson these days no matter what character he is supposed to be..[sigh].
  15. @ Nollaig: Probably it was easier to film or something. But it is annoying when they mess around with stuff like that. @Athena: No none of the kids nor me have read the book yet. But it looks right up their street. I could wish for a different director, as Tim Burton gets a bit predictable at times. I really like Eva Green though; she has a spooky persona and is perfect. Her eyes freak me out before she even says anything.
  16. Anybody seen Miss Peregrine's Home For Unusual Children yet? I am going to take the kids Monday...
  17. Haven't seen it but it sounds great.
  18. Pride And Prejudice And Zombies. OK, I already knew that it was going to be bad but this was truly manky dreadful. Lena Heady and Matt Smith were the high points as they just played their characters over the top. The plot deviated wildly from the mash-up book, I suppose in an effort to inject more tension, but they chopped out the really funniest part of the book, the fate of Elizabeth's friend Charlotte, and added some explosions instead.
  19. I liked it, it's an OK film, not a great deal of depth to the story but not the worst western I have seen.
  20. Two westerns, one old one new: The Searchers with John Wayne and Jane Got A Gun with Natalie Portman.
  21. Helga by Helga Gerhardi. https://www.amazon.com/Helga-Womans-Refugee-Re-united-War-scattered/dp/0952193302
  22. Yes I agree that can be distracting and irritating. I read a book by a left wing comedian- Marcus somebody- and I couldn't finish it because it was just very political and forever bashing the politicians he didn't like. I also don't like book themes that are Christian allegories. One I read recently was GK Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday. This started off so well and was really funny but I didn't like the preachy message in the ending.
  23. Watched series 2 of The Book Group. It was very funny.
  24. Welcome! This is a great place to talk and breathe everything books
