  1. I have found that certain books may cause a change in my wardrobe. I love the "fairy" look or the medieval look (but modernized!)
  2. Raven, I cant tell you that I'm more surprised at myself. I always knew I was nosey, but I have NEVER come out with 20 questions like this before. Must be the intelligent people I'm talking to;) My reading and telly watching are pretty parallel. I mean, I do watch different things but let it be a BBC classic, I'm on it!
  3. Here is a suggestion. Have her over or take her for a drive. Instead of making her read, put in a audio book, HP, for instance. Let her listen to if for a short time, then cut it off. Everytime she's with you play a little more. She'll get to thinking about that story and become really curious about it. One of two things can happen. Either you will finish that book on cd or she'll want to read it because she cant wait for you. I also would get the book to go with the audio so she would eventually be able to "read" along with it. Trust me, my kids know most of Jane Austen, Anna Karenina and so many others because thats what I listened to. They got really excited.
  4. Seems to me that my books are centered during the autumn winter months and it also appears that I'm spending alot more time in the U.K. (never been there but in my mind!). I'm debating about whether or not I want to pick up anymore Alexander Mccall Smith books. I read his 44 Scotland series but they really seemed to fizzle about book 3.
  5. Hello all, been busy at work today. Here's my question. For those who DO watch television, do you find that you watch the same types of shows as the books you read? I.E... do you find yourself drawn to only mysteries if thats the only type of book you read?
  6. Seems like I'm the only person I know who reads for one, and for another, if they were readers, they wouldnt be interested in MY books.
  7. Maybe my grandwobbler is a born reader. He's spent time in the bookshoppe with me since being a few months old. Seems like his first word was "boo(k)". He will walk to the childrens books and bend over, point and say "boo(k)".
  8. Working in a bookshoppe, one would think I would go for the books that everyone else is reading but I dont. I like to scan the shelves and get hands on with the books. Because the genre I read is pretty unvarying, I can tell pretty much by the title if its what I'm looking for.
  9. I really want to finish pu An Irish Country Christmas but I know I DEFINATELY need to start Moonstone this evening, tomorrow at the latest.
  10. Scarletbella, I have the book and have been reading it last week. I adore this book! I've found myself reading the book and watching the movie at the same time. No kidding. Of course, as great as the movie is, there are sections in the book that are really intense, moving and a little unsettling, but I couldnt put it down. This movies has caused our bookstore to have to increase our selection of cookbooks. Seems that Julia Childs life has caused a resurgence and revival in the kitchen. We are constantly special ordering her cookbooks.
  11. This past summer (as most summers in a bookshoppe) was a nightmare. The kids REALLY hated their required summer reading. The schools dont allow them to read what the want to so you've got really ticked teens getting stuck reading The Great Gatsby when they want to pick what suits their interest. Sure way to turn off a kid from reading.
  12. LOL. I honestly get sick of how explicit everything is here, nothing subtle. Nothing to the imagination.
  13. Here I go again! So, you REALLY love a book, I mean, REALLY love a book (series). Have you found yourself so influenced by the book/series that you attempted to change your lifestyle? I mean, there are some HP fanatics out there who refuse to come back to the Land of Muggles type of obsession. When I started reading Mists of Avalon, I took a keen interest in the clothing. I think it had to do with the movie, but I could see myself dressing like Morgaine! I also started taking interest in herbs and natural healing.
  14. Vanwa, here in the states we call that "rubberknecking". Lets see... people who dont wash there hands but want to touch you, people who walk into your place of business talking at the top of their lungs on the cell phone same people who wont acknowledge you when you greet them, yet look at you like they've lost their minds because they think you're ignoring them! people who allow their children to have a full flown nuclear meltdown in a public place and wont remove them from the area until they regain there senses.
  15. I have a sister in law who lends out dvds and books. We are required to sign the item out if we borrow them! Nellie, you know, in a scene from the movie Inkheart, there is an aunt who loves books so much that no one is allowed in her library (especially children) and she has a table where her rare books are locked away.
  16. I'm not a big mystery/crime reader but I do have my favorites. Tell me, do you enjoy British or American mystery/crime writers? Why? I tend to go along the lines of the old mysteries and they all seem to come from across the pond;)
  17. Drivers who pull up on an accident scene to ask the office for directions. Honest, this happened to me when I was working a horrific accident:motz: I had presence of mind to send them in the total opposite direction.
  18. Oh Roxi, you MUST google him:mrgreen: As far left asYOU are, thats how far RIGHT he is! Glenn is a journalist (use it loosely here) on our Fox network. He's a screaming banshee that has actually had advertisers like Walmart and UPS withdraw advertising from his show because of his hatred of President Obama.
  19. Thanks so much! I dont EVER recall being this "talkative" on a forum before. This place really stretches me and I enjoy the interaction. Thanks for the friend invite!

  20. And as a Christian, I stay away from books written by authors such as Glenn Beck and others who are raving lunatics. I personally do not believe they are benefiting the Chrisitian community but spreading hate and division. Now, I'm going to go so far as to say I'm a conservative, but please understand, that not all conservatives are radicals, narrow and of the same elk as the formentioned! I refuse to spend hard earned money on things that pollutes my eyes.
  21. Hopefully I put this in the right place:) For you die hard book lovers, do you lend your books to your friends and family? If so, is it like pulling teeth with a pair of pliers? OR Are you a borrower? Do you find that you will borrow a book before you spend money to purchase the book? If you borrow, is it because of financial reasons, limited space or are you just trying the book on for size? I'll start! I dont like to borrow books. I rarely check one out at the library now. I would just rather have my own. Besides, I've racked up so many fines on late fees that I keep our local librarians in sweet n low, creamer and coffee for months at a time! Also, I am a snacker and I'd rather not ruin someone elses books. Working in a bookshoppe, I tend to see lots of people coming in to replace a borrowed, lost or destroyed book that belonged to someone else.
  22. I can only read in bed during the daytime (weekends). If I attempt to read it at night, I'm reading it with my eyelids closed. Too many times my family has had to take the book off my face.
  23. Do you find that your religion or beliefs (if you practice a particular religion) influences what your reading? I'm a Christian so for me certain books dont make it to my bookshelf. For instance, books whose only plot is sex or books that promote certain lifestyles, I just dont read. Personal choice. There are books that I do read that other Christians will flat out say is wrong. Oh well... This question is just a question. You dont have to name a particular book or even your particular religion. I just want to know if your beliefs influence the types of books you read. Please no pondits on why someone should or shouldnt read something, This is just a getting to know fellow readers question:readingtwo:
  24. I'm going to finish my mystery A Marriage Tragedy, a few chapters of An Irish Country Christmas and MAYBE a chapter of Harry, A History.
