  1. I was googling trying to find an RPG site for crime/thrillers - like a Cluedo style forum - I found this forum - had a browse and decided to join ... out of interest it was Google.
  2. I hope you have fun, renreg. I see you already write. So do I!
  3. Horrible ... Well treasure the moments you can. I spent the last week of my grandfather's life by the bedside of my grandfather. The second to last day of his life I couldn't take it any longer and walked out of the room and sat down in tears! I just hated to see a vibrant, loving man like he was being taken down by a blood complaint ... The tears hurt - then a nurse came by and stopped she told me:

"What would you rather be doing sitting here crying and possibly lose the chance to say goodbye to him - or go there, hold his hand and tell him you love him as many times as you can before you say goodbye!"

I went back - for ... (real tears coming just telling you this!) anyway. For about half-an-hour my mum was one side of the bed and I was on the other - he grabbed our hands and squeezed them tight - the last time I ever touched him - the day after he died!

  4. The books are loads better, Scarlette. Snape is seen more - I love Snape and completely underused in the films! He is actually the second most important character in the books in my opinion. I am looking forward to the film but not as much Alice in Wonderland!
  5. Boiled potatoes. Beef sausages. Baked beans. Glass of lemonade.
  6. I am reading Victor Klemperer's diaries so obviously that has to be translated into English. Shadow of the Wind had to be translated also ... As had the Anne Frank diaries. That is all I can think of that I've read - oh and I have a book of Goethe's poems - the main text is in german with the English translation underneath - one of them is one of my most looked at - so most looked at that the book falls to that page instantly. And Asterix books of course!
  7. I love this story, it is evocative and wonderful - scary and enlightening. Sorry BJ, but I loved the Kenneth Branagh film (it was way better than Gary Oldman's pathetic Dracula any rate!) But then the world would be boring if we were all the same. I was in tears when I read how the so-called 'monster' spied on this beautiful family and helped them with hunting for them and leaving gifts for them - only for them to turn him away when they discovered him ... I've got a lump in my throat thinking about it! I read this in one day!
  8. Hello Lisa - I've recently got into Harlan Coben. In fact I read two of his books in one week! Aside from that I am more into fantasy (not sci fi apart from Dr. Who! and Star Wars) Classics, History and biographys. Welcome and hope you love it here!
  9. The colours are easier on the eye aren't they? Would you be interested in seeing some of my book? My email should be in my profile.

  10. I must be the only one on the planet that can't stand Top Gear - James and Richard I don't mind but Jeremy absolutely does my head in and as he's the main presenter it means that I can't watch it ... besides I hate cars and prefer Drama. I am watching something called Hope Springs. I love this show and is the highlight of my Sunday!

  11. Thanks Lucy. Lucy, btw is one of my favourite girls names. I called my tortoishell cat Lucy.

  12. LOVE your profile. How on earth do you get a piccie behind your profile - I have tried and can't do it and have asked other people ... please tell me?!?

  13. I love dustjackets and buy hard back books for those alone - especially really interesting covers like the David Eddings Elder God series and the Redemption of Althalus. I love to look at the cover before I open the book - to me it's part of the story. I judge by the title first of all, if I like the title then I will read the blurb at the back - then, if I am in a shop I tend to read the first page. If I am on Amazon and it has that facility I go inside the book. Lastly reviews, I like to discern what I read - words that put me off a book are 'Feminist book for our times', as I am a rather old fashioned woman and prefer old fashioned issues being tackled. Phrases that makes me want to buy a book are: 'Haunting,' 'ethereal', 'evocative', and 'sensual' - 'darkly comic by turns' is a phrase I'm sure I read somewhere as a review on one of my books. The cover is important but I am more drawn by the title - and if I have read the author previously.
  14. 1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen 2 The Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkien 3 Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte 4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling 5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee 6 The Bible - 7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte 8 1984 - George Orwell 9 His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman 10 Great Expectations - Charles Dickens 11 Little Women - Louisa M Alcott 12 Tess of the D
  15. Well I prefer a story done and dusted and the I am your father is my favourite line - I also love the inner battle of Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker ... but obviously I am not going to convert anyone and I wouldn't want to. I just prefer Star Wars and I think it does have an intelligent story line if you look beyond the big explosions, corney scripts and what not - there is a philosophy, a religion if you like - and the whole point is to unite the galaxy under one banner - if that is not a positive storyline I don't know what is! Also Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalkers journey to and from the dark side touched my heart as I believe in redemption through love and I think that is quite a challenging concept to put into simple terms and I think George Lucas acheived that brilliantly. As I said at the start I know I will not convert anyone but there are intelligent story lines and thoughts and feelings - it is not just about big bangs and 'may the force be with you!' Star Trek may be intelligent but they leave me cold and I can't get to grips with it - as I said I am not a huge sci fi fan anyway - it doesn't make me stupid (I hope) I just prefer Princesses, Pirates and Dark Lords!
  16. Not me, I can't stand Star Trek. I could never get into it but then Sci Fi is not really my thing which is why I suppose I prefer the Star Wars films. As Jewell said you get an insight not a deep understanding also I don't have a scientific type brain - Star Wars is perfect for me because it's more a fairy story set in space - so has that element of Grimms Fairy Tales about it. Star Trek bored me to tears.
  17. I know, I am the least competitive person in the world (I don't watch or participate in any sport as I hate to be competitive.) Things like this are really interesting as it shows how diverse an individual actually is and that is what interests me the most.
  18. I see that I am the only one who has put Schindlers List on their list of top fives ...
  19. FIVE? That's even more difficult as I love so many ... It's all right I think I know what they are... hang on. Schindlers List: Thomas Keneally Wind In The Willows: Kenneth Grahame Chronicles of Narnia: C S Lewis A Tale of Two Cities: Charles Dickens Rebecca: Daphne Du Maurier. There. I just thought that the title of this thread was top twenty books an individual forum member likes!
  20. I can't think of twenty but I can think of a few: Schindlers List: Thomas Keneally Birdsong: Sebastian Faulks The Railway Children: E Nesbit The Secret Garden: Francis Hodgson-Burnett The Enchanted April: Elizabeth Von Arnem (I think!) Constant Gardener: John Le Carre Rebecca: Daphne Du Maurier A Tale of Two Cities: Charles Dickens Little Dorrit: Charles Dickens Bleak House: Charles Dickens Oliver Twist: Charles Dickens Emma: Jane Austen Wuthering Heights: Emily Bronte Jane Eyre: Charlotte Bronte Little Women: Louisa M Alcott Frankenstein: Mary Shelley Dracula: Bram Stoker Hound of the Baskervilles: Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle Wind In The Willows: Kenneth Grahame Chronicles of Narnia: C S Lewis That's it and I think that is twenty ... so ... um obviously I could! lol.
  21. Dangerous thread for me ... I have put on weight and shouldn't really look at cake recipes as I will only have to buy clothes to fit ... as it is my size 12 jeans don't fit anymore ... :motz:It's chocolate to boot ... no rehab for a chocolate addiction is there?
  22. My eyes must have glazed over after about the fifth one ... that is a pretty long title ... surely best and worst would have been better and more to the point?
  23. Depp is absolutely beautiful! That is the word to describe him - beautiful. And so versatile and one of the rare actors that has never been able to be typecast as anything. I must admit the only Burton film I've disliked is his version of James and the Giant Peach. That is one of my favourite stories and (as far as I'm concerned) he completely ruined the story! But that is the purist in me. Others like the film and the book - I prefer the book.
