  1. I've read Noughts and Crosses a while ago and quite enjoyed it. This happened purely because I stumbled across it. Great reviews, Jessi.
  2. Damn! I forgot about Kostova's The Swan Thieves! I'lll have to go and buy it this weekend... Looks like you've got some great reading ahead - I have some of those novels on your wishlist. Hope you're very well.
  3. D'oh!
  4. Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami Twenty-two-year-old Sumire is in love with a woman seventeen years her senior. But whereas Miu is glamorous and successful, Sumire is an aspiring writer who dresses in an oversized second-hand coat and heavy boots like a character in a Kerouac novel. Surprised that she might, after all, be a lesbian, Sumire spends hours on the phone talking to her best friend K about the big questions in life: what is sexual desire and should she ever tell Miu how she feels about her. Frustrated in his own love for Sumire, K consoles himself by having an affair with the mother of one of his pupils. Then a desperate Miu calls from a small Greek island and asks for his help, and he discovers that something very strange has happened to Sumire. Wonderful. Murakami, once again, envelopes you into his magical world

Ayup, fella. I read your piece on Social Networking Sites. I believe the expression is "lol" (as long as that doesn't actually mean "Lots of love", 'cos that'd be weird, me saying that to you, wouldn't it? I simply mean it made me laugh. A bit. Anyway. Hope you're well, me old chum.

  6. Again, this is true. Giulia's excellent, isn't she?
  7. Oooh, I read all of her Earthsea novels when I was a kid. My friends and I used to pretend to be all the characters (I wasn't cool enough to be Ged, so I tended to be Vetch). I might have to have a go with this one. I'll look forward to your thoughts on this, Michelle.
  8. Do men enjoy Austen Novels as much as women? No.
  9. See above. I'm with Giulia on this.
  10. This is, as you say Frankie, the one. Yep, I've read it and, yep, it's very readable. You'll like it, I'm sure. Classic Koontz.
  11. Crumbs! I've got most of the books on your wish-list, Andrea! Plus, The Magic Cottage is really great. I've read it twice (but not for a loooong time). Hope you're really well.
  12. Actually, Scarlette, you could just delve into my bookshelves - there's, like, three books I've not got... How're you doing, chum?
  13. Nope, see, already I'm misting up... *sounds of Mac weeping into his mug of tea
  14. Ooh! Christopher Fowler's on your list! He's awesome! And I truly loved Stieg Larsson's trilogy. Truly. If you thought the first one was good, wait until you've banged through the next couple. Wahey!
  15. Right. I did enjoy Marley & Me, but cried like a baby at the end, the bloody thing. Not sure if I want to put myself through that again!
  16. Yeah, I quite liked it way back when, but sort of grew out of it a little. I still enjoy the occasional James Herbert and King, but anything gratuitous or overtly macabre just seems to turn me right off. Susan Cooper's stuff is for teens/young adults, I think - and I wonder if it would stand up to my ageing mind. Maybe I shouldn't revisit them, for fear of ddestroying some very happy memories?

    Hi

    Welcome. :smile2:
  18. Sarah. Where are you? Report back, immediately! We're missing you on here, Lady! :friends0:

  19. Here's a belated 'Happy New Year', Michelle! I hope you have had a smashing few weeks.

One question. When do I give you some more money? I don't know.

Anyway. There you are. Hoping you're excellent and well. Take care. :D

Evening. I notice you're a fan of Andy McNab. Did you ever watch that Spaced episode where Mike (the lovely Nick Frost) is waiting to go into his tribunal with the TA and he says to himself "I'm Andy McNab, I'm Andy McNab, I'm Andy McNab, I'm Andy McDowell"?

    Excellent stuff.

I'm off now, fella. Pip pip.

  21. Hiya! I'll look forward to seeing what you think of The Other Hand. I read it a while back (I must have reviewed it on my thread). Hoping you're okay.
  22. Hmmm...I'm not entirely sure that this one'll be a novel I actively seek out. No offence, mind. After all, I am a man (at least, I was last time I checked!) Chick lit's not for me. Or maybe I'm just not connecting with my inner girly? Are these any good? Does this make me seem softer? Hope you're alright, Rach. TTFN.
  23. The Shining is a great novel. Funnily enough, it was the first of this genre that I ever read. I was a mere babe of 13 (mum frowned on sweary scary books until I was an angst-ridden teen). I never looked back. Prior to this pivotal moment, I'd read LOTR and that sort of stuff, THGTTG and a series of books called The Dark Is Rising by an author called...erm...oh, yeah, Susan Cooper. I adored these books. Hast tha read'em, Girt?
  24. I've been really trying hard to fully enjoy Harris' works but, I'm ever so sorry guys, I just can't seem to get these books and my mojo in alignment. Maybe I should try again? But I have sooooooo many books on my TBR mountain that it seems like hard work when there're others that I'll probably devour. What to do? Oh! What to do???
  25. Well. I can't say fairer than that. Certainly without my teeth in...
