  1. Right, well, I'm back now, after doing manly things, like...err...fixed my car...erm...built a wall and...err...hunted for food?
  2. Hiya. I'm an emotionally retarded bloke, so I don't often cry. I, too, got a bit teary during The Book Thief, at the end of The Historian (incidentally, one of my favourite books ever) but most of all, the time I sobbed quite unashamedly was when gets closer and closer to him. Ooh, I get a bit choked even thinking about it, even now...excuse me...
  3. Hello. I've never read any of Anne Rice's stuff. She is supposed to be a cracking good author, though. I struggle with the whole 'vampire' thing a little. If you liked that, another belting good book to read is 'I Am Legend' by Richard Matheson. Nothing like the film (although as a film, it was very good too). Also, I've just finished a book called 'Bad Monkeys' by Matt Ruff. This is now in my top ten, definitely. Don't read the blurb or look at the cover, though, because it'll put you off. Just try it. Hope you're well.
  4. Ah, well, yes. It's not at all creepy though. Wonderful, is what it is. I very much enjoyed a book called 'I, Lucifer' by a chap named Glen Duncan. Excellent author, although one needs to be fairly open minded about certain scenes. It's narrated by Old Nick himself. Other books of his have also been superb, but disturbing. One of them, 'Weathercock', I almost put down after thinking I couldn't read any further, it was that disturbing! However, at that very point, the plot turned, the characters shifted and the awareness the author has of his readers made me truly respect him. Try him. He's very good. Maybe start with 'Death Of An Ordinary Man'.
  5. Do, please, get hold of this book. I, along with what would seem to be everyone else, loved it. Very easy to read, very difficult to put down. It even made me a little teary. It's not often a book can do that to an emotionally stunted Neanderthal like myself, I can tell you!
  6. The Dark Tower series is actually very good. I had forgotten I'd read that bunch of books as well. Have a go. I'm sure you'll like it.
  7. So, what did you think of it?
  8. I'm going to be very predictable and say that my favourite is The Lord Of The Rings, followed by a very close second with His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman. I've never been a massive fan of fantasy (although, thinking about it, I devoured Susan Cooper's 'The Dark Is Rising' series when I was younger), but appreciate good books whatever the genre...actually, thinking some more about it, I really enjoyed Stephen Donaldson's books as well...I'm beginning to think that peope shouldn't trust anything I say until I've properly thought about it...
  9. I, too, very much like the Myron Bolitar books. I love the almost symbiotic relationship that Myron and Win have - Myron, the conscience to Win's cold, pragmatic logic - and how they rely upon one another to survive. I cannot wait for his ninth book in this series to come out (apparently some time this year - yay!)
  10. I'm afraid I only got half-way through this novel, finding it formulaic and, to be honest, not gripping enough for me. Is it worth me having another go? I am, unfortunately, one of those chaps that thinks life is too short to be reading something that still hasn't reeled one in by the half-way mark...sorry:roll:
  11. I read it when it was first released and quite enjoyed it. I certainly thought it was almost a return to form for Stephen King. I feel that sometimes he's too gratuitous for his own good and that he wallows too much, basking in his own glory. I have really loved some of his other stuff, mind, like 'It', 'The Stand' and particularly 'The Talisman' which he co-authored with Peter Straub. Excellent stuff.
  12. Hello People. I'm new to this forum. I've read a number of the Jack Reacher novels since I first picked up 'Killing Floor' last year. I had avoided Lee Child for the very silly reason that I had read the blurb on the back and said to myself "This sounds terribly clich
