  1. I really enjoy Robert Rankin's books. I started off with The Antipope and just fell in love with his eccentric characters immediately. I really enjoyed the Armageddon trilogy as well. I find him very funny.
  2. Hi Mia. I totally agree with you about the wondrous Joss Whedon. I think he's a genius. I haven't yet seen Firefly but really loved Serenity. I have my brother to thank for the Buffy/Angel stuff, as he sent me the complete collections a while ago on DVD, God bless his cotton socks.
  3. Morning! Hope you're okay and that your boyfriend's feeling better. Tell him to get online. And that I really loved The Algebraist by Iain M Banks. Loved it! Also, the very end of Look To Windward was truly excellent. He'll know what I mean. Ta ta.

  4. Morning Michelle. Eeee - I was really poorly yesterday, and evidently my brain had shut part of itself down, hence my pestering you. I've just, very easily, found all the information I need. I beg your pardon for being reasonably annoying in my divvy - ness. Cheers!

  5. My first sci-fi book was The Hitchhikers' Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams. My first fantasy book was The Hobbit by Tolkien. My first horror book was The Shining by Stephen King. There you are. Three good'un's certainly.
  6. Revommendations, anyone? Typo's, eh?
  7. Hello there, Nicola. I quite agree with you on the topic of our chum Chuck. There's another author that's fairly similar called Glen Duncan. He's one of these guys where, just like you, I arrive at certain points in the middle and go "Whoa there, mister! I'm going to put you over there for a while and play with some cute kittens!" just to bring nice things back into my disturbed brain. He is quite, quite brilliant, however. I would highly recommend I, Lucifer and Weathercock by him. Ooh, and Death of an Ordinary Man. This is very good also. I hope this finds you tickety-boo. Probe more if you require further revommendations and chat. Pip pip and toodles for now.
  8. Hello Kate! Hope this finds you well. There are some very nice people on this site. Welcome and enjoy. It took me a while to find my feet (fingers??) wandering around here, but I've found some blooming magic recommendations. Have a good...erm...day? Afternoon? Evening? Whatever lies ahead for you after you've read this message. Cheers!

  9. Hi there. I've been the target of no less than 3 complaints made by one of my service users who just doesn't like me and have had to be investigated every single time (always completely unfounded and always given a full apology by both him and his *shudders* mother). I always find it very stressful, so can empathise with you entirely. Keep your chin up. I'm assuming something good happens in 27 days? Take care.

Hey there, Nicola. I hope you're having a good day. I'm off work with the dreaded 'Man Flu' currently (2nd day off, now). It does, however, mean I get to loz about my gaff reading, eating and generally taking it easy - not something I do a lot of - so, let's hear it for sickness! Yay!

  11. A minute on the lips, a lifetime on the hips, eh? :DFunnily enough, it was my brother who taught me that...

Hello, my friend. Hope you're well!

  13. I used to listen to Catherine Wheel a fair bit in the nineties, and I really liked the band Jellyfish, whom I had the fortune to meet whilst I was playing in LA in 1994. Which was nice...(I keep making Fast Show references today - it must be this cold I've got)...
  14. Ah, the cultural stereotype! Worry not, my friend! I could just have easily said bangers and mash myself. However. I really do prefer your rather excellent choice. Italian is, has been and always will be my very favourite country for food. There's so much choice! Oooh, I'd go wild...
  15. Succinct and to the point, my friend. Succinct and to the point.
  16. Yes yes yes! Harlan Coben is brilliant in every way! You have to read Deal Breaker by him. I get sooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited when a new one of his comes out. Also, Lee Child's Killing Floor. Excellent also. I get ridiculously excited when he has a new one out. A word of advice, though, that I could have used and got on the case a damn sight quicker. Don't read the blurb, because it'll put you off like it did me. Just get 'em, open 'em and read 'em. I quite simply defy anyone not to love these books. Cheers mate!
  17. Wotcha! Have I asked you if you've read any stuff by Michael Marshall Smith? He's one of these guys that writes under different names for different genres (he writes as Michael Marshall for his [excellent] crime novels).

If not, you simply have to read his debut novel Only Forward. It was published, I think, in 1994 and is one of the best, most surprising novels I've read. It made me laugh out loud once or twice as well! Let me know. I'll give you a list of his stuff.

  18. Hi guys. These three authors I find consistently gripping and enjoyable to read. I mix them up with what some may call more 'worthy' books. For example, I've just finished Simple Genius by Baldacci and am just picking up Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami (I know Chrysalis_stage will appreciate this). I found Simple Genius to be as expected. Fast paced with short chapters leaving you wanting more, reasonable character development (the two protagonists have featured in two other novels) and some slightly more weighty passages that surprised me. What do you folks think of these chaps? Another couple of belting crime authors I really like are Michael Marshall and Jack Kerley. Do pass comment. Thanks.
  19. I could wax rhapsodic about the marvelous chap for days without end. However, today must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays... I was talking to a mate about the lovely little jokes that he put in his works. For example, when Arthur points at a Chesterfield sofa and asks Ford what it is doing in prehistoric England, Ford says "Eddys in the space/time continuum." To which Arthur replies "Is he? Is he really?" Still makes me chuckle to this day.
  20. Ah. Sorry, again. I'm not getting things right at the moment, am I? Sorry.

  21. Ah. Sorry, again. I'm not getting this right at the moment, am I? Sorry.

  22. I have just finished demolishing some Fish Finger sandwiches (yum) which I have slapped together to make myself feel a little better. I'm off work (first time in nearly two years!) because I'm feeling rotten. What else do people make for themselves if they're feeling cacky? Another favourite of mine is gammon, broccoli, mash and cheese sauce! Mmmm...I might even make that tonight!
  23. Roxi. I loved Perfume. What a thumping good book. Have you seen the film, too?
  24. Crumbs, mate. I tell you what, this Dexter chap keeps turning up, doesn't he? I'll have to give him a go. Should I buy the DVD's then? I don't have an ariel to my tv (through choice, mind) but collect films and series on DVD. I'm a selective viewer. Hope you're well.
  25. Hello. Did you know that the author Dean Koontz thinks that all dogs are closer to God than we are? They feature quite heavily in a number of his books. And, rest assured, none of the dogs ever come to harm. I have bought some of these books for a teenage lad (the son of some friends) so they might be more than appropriate for you! Happy days. Cheers mate.
