  1. Janet- Saw you only gave this one a 7/10... Curious as to what you thought about it that gave it that score. I haven't read it, but from what I gathered from the movie trailers, it seemed to be a pretty predictable love story?? Is this the case?
  2. I will take your advice on not saying CHW.. I'm just not sure I could try to muddle through the nonsense again. You're right about expectations.. I think I've been disappointed a few times in the past, and I've finally learned to not let hype play into things for me. It worked with the Twilight series as that was hyped to hell and back.. I expected little (mainly because I'm not into vampire & fantasy works) and actually had no problem with the series. If I'd expected it to rock my world due to the hype, I would have been sadly disappointed in the books possibly. But the movie.. Gawd, the movie! I made the mistake of expecting something from that, and I about strangled myself. It's a valuable lesson in expecting nothing, and being pleasantly surprised.. or expecting the world, and getting ****. Expect nothing, and you can't be disappointed, I guess, eh??
  3. Finished Drowning Ruth today.. and am very glad I chose this one to takes notes on! Lots of shifts between past and present, as well as narrator shifts, so the notes helped me keep track and were a good reference guide when I was getting bogged down and confused during all the swapping. A good book... probably not one I'll keep around to re-read (like I do that anyway, HA!) but a good book. Some parts moved a tad slow for me.. the book actually has some good twists and surprises, it's just that they are revealed and unwound veeerrry slowly for my liking. Best thing about the book for me: the descriptions are amazing. Schwarz seems really adept at describing actions perfectly in a way that I thought "I know exactly what that feels like... I've felt that 100 times, but never would have been able to explain it." I'd recommend it to readers, but would also suggest reading it in large chunks at a time, mainly to keep easy track of the shifts between past and present/narratives/etc. I had some pretty large breaks b/t reading due to travel and volunteer work, and the book doesn't seem to be a great candidate for the "stop and start" reading method.
  4. Oooh I forgot to list Anna Karenina for me, also, but it's on my TBR list. I HAVE to start diving into some of these classics! I'm so terrible!
  5. lol.. yep.. definitely a reason for concern here! ;) It's actually funny.. I was like "Ooooh a girl on my book club forum online has this picture on her profile, and I'd never seen it before that. Now here it is!!" and he rolled his eyes playfully and said "You spend waaaaaaay too much time on your book club." Then he promptly handed me his blackberry to see if I could access BCF from it.. (boo.. I couldn't). ;)

Trip was great.. Dubai's fantastic. I miss it already!

  6. I'd never heard of this book until I joined this forum, and I keep seeing things about it here, almost every day! I'm going to add it to my "Look Up" list on my TBR list. I was a Psych major in college, so touched a little on many of the developmental disorders, so this could be interesting to me.
  7. Hi and welcome! Sorry I missed you the first day .. was out of town. Saw that your username is your own name spelled backwards... Gorgeous!!

  9. I've had tabouli, but never made it.. We get quite a bit of it here. Do you just toss all of the ingredients in cold (except for rice, of course, if I chose that route) and let that be that?
  10. Saw a red, sparkly Absolut bottle this wkend in Dubai.. just like the one you have in your photo! I thought of you! :)

  11. Marian Keyes (favorite of hers is "Rachel's Holiday" although I've truly loved each of her books) and Sophie Kinsella are probably my 2 favorites out of the ones mentioned.. I do like some of Ahern's books though (loved "PS I Love You".. not crazy about "If You Could See Me Now") , and some of Carole Matthews were good as well (liked "Lets Meet on Platform 8".. not as wild about "With or Without You"). I have honestly never heard of this Chris Manby, which may mean the author isn't distributed much in the US?? I also like Jane Green and LOVE Jane Heller -- I don't think there's a book by Jane Heller that I didn't love! Also love Mary Kay Andrews
  12. Ooooh good luck since you just joined!! We don't have Slimming World over here in the US that I know of, but from reading all the posts, it sounds like it's akin to Weight Watchers. Best of luck
  13. Glad to hear I'm not alone here.. I'm keeping "CHW" on the shelf in case I decide to try it again, but I seriously don't know if I can do it. And "BB" was so hyped up that I thought I was going to loove it.. So disappointing! At least now I know it's not just me.
  14. I read this book and it dragged ooon and ooonnn for me... I made it to the end, but I was really annoyed during the whole thing. However, I will say that I am in the minority on this one, as many people loved "The Husband." I hope you like it if you give it a go!
  15. I also tried this book at one time in the past couple of years.. it just didn't grab me! I moved on to something else since I had more books from the library to work my way through. I wish I could remember exactly what it was that didn't excite me, but I can't... just remember getting distracted and it not drawing me in.
  16. I haven't read Wuthering Heights (much to Roxi's dismay, I have found) , and also haven't read Jane Eyre. I'm going to try them both soon though!! I love Jane Austen, but haven't read Sense and Sensibility by her.
  17. I've never had a serious illness in life, so can't say that books have helped me through anything like that. I will be the one to admit to bringing books to sporting events, though! My husband loooves sports and I'm just not a big fan, so I bring my book along and we both win.
  18. If a book doesn't grab me early on and I'm struggling to get through the pages, I don't mind giving up after even 20 or 30 pages.. If I'm getting distracted and bored, I'm not getting anything out of it for myself, and it's hard for a book to win me over after that. The most recent I gave up on was "Chasing Harry Winston" by Lauren Weisberger. I also gave up on Plum Sykes' "Bergdorf Blondes".. Both of these books just totally bored me, even though I thought I was going to love the light reads.
  19. I've been using my gym membership card as I always take my book to the gym with me... Now I don't tend to forget either my membership card OR my book since they're together.
  20. Of course you did! You wouldn't not share with us all, now would you?
  21. YEY Yey Yey!! Thank you, Ben.. Now I have a cookie! Still can't believe I forgot Roxi's recent pasta fetish though...
  22. Ooooh BOO!! You HAVE to be right! I forgot all about Roxi's pasta kick for a minute! How could I?? Ohh my terrible memory.. woe is meeeee. Oh boo.. I lost.. I do not get a cookie at all!!
  23. Can I have a cookie from YOU since I guessed "chicken" for Roxi's dinner, but I may have gotten it wrong?? Look, you had chicken.. Doesn't that count for something that I guessed chicken?? Nuffin?? Nuffin at all???
  24. See, this is just one reason this board is so great... It can be such an outlet for anyone! There's so much going on in it, and so many active posters... and with so many topics covered, it's so simple to find things here that interest you and before you know it.. you're talking with someone else that shares an interest in the same thing you do. Friends instantly .. or at least more instant than irl usually
  25. Glad to hear you finished these, Nessie! I know you were loving them, so glad to hear you still enjoyed them all the way through. Will it be hard for you to find something to read next, since you were such a big Twilight fan?
