  1. I have to say I tend to suspend belief and roll with the flow of the book and enjoy it as pure escapism. I believe my daughter would agree with you though - she says if it can't happen in real life then it's not worth reading! (Getting her to read anything is a chore though - unfortunately!) Yes that's very true - it would put an awful lot of authors out of business!
  2. It can be a shame that sometimes people do not hear the words you are saying and understand from what you say that you are angry or stressed with something. It would be a better world if we didn't all stomp around just trying to get across how we feel. I have been told that I come across as very laid back, but I think life's too short to worry about the small things in life! (Although I guess my small things can be someone else's large!)

  3. Already this month I have acquired 6 additions to my collection of books and I've borrowed another 3 from the library. I am trying hard at the moment to calm down a little as I have more than enough to be reading and also having 2 books on the go at once is unusual for me.
  4. I went to the library for the first time in a while yesterday and picked up The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee by Rebecca Miller - I have nearly finished it already. I certainly wasn't sure where the book was going in the beginning and I find it's 1 of those books that keeps you reading although you're not sure why! I've finished reading it now and actually it all came together for me at the end and I have to say I loved it!
  5. Hi there and welcome!
  6. Hope you enjoy your time here!
  7. Hi there - I don't know about the loo bit. but I can definitely be a bit loopy sometimes, although I guess with age and life's events I have calmed down a little!

Unfortunately with work commitments and other commitments at weekends it would be really hard to have another dog at the moment, but I would love another when the time is right. I do have a cat, but she is VERY independent.

I was just reading about your Great-grandfather - what an interesting background to have & I must say your user name sounds really calming to me - any reason for it?

  8. Hi there! Yes we do miss him - he was like a huge teddy bear - he was called Paddy - short for Paddington. The softest most loveable, but huge dog: If he got on the bed there was no moving him!

  9. Hi Emma & Welcome!
  10. We are certainly similar in some ways - I now have No Time for Goodbye by Linwood Barclay on my wishlist. I'm not a teacher though ( I work in an office) and I know I wouldn't have the patience to be the type of teacher that I respect. I think some people are just born to teach and know how to gain the respect and interest of the children and I have the feeling that you are one of those.
  11. Many years ago I fancied owning a second-hand bookshop and even though it's disappeared into the background on occasion I still fancy it, although never expect it to happen. before that I imagined myself as a novelist & I know this won't happen!
  12. Thank you! I've decided to review books I read now so that I keep on top of what I have enjoyed, otherwise I find I can forget books quite quickly, unless they have a real effect on me, but then I can sometimes be just left with the feeling and not much knowledge of what the book is about.
  13. Evan Casher, who makes films, has a telephone call from his mum, she needs him to visit her straight away, it's over 2 hours away, but there is an urgency there that he cannot refuse. So begins his great adventure: Who works for the CIA? Who are the baddies and who are the good guys? Where does Carrie (his girlfriend) fit into all this? This is an absolutely fantastic read, you never quite know where it's going to head next. I was wondering if I was going to enjoy the book initially as I had seen some low ratings, but I'm glad that didn't deter me. It was totally wonderful escapism. I enjoyed Evan as a character and enjoyed seeing him grow in his travels deeper into the world of espionage. This is well worth a read, especially anyone who enjoys a light espionage thriller.
  14. Yes - firey colours would be great! My son went out last night, so we're going to watch last night's episode of Dr Who tonight. We mostly sit down to watch it together.

  15. I hope I enjoy this as much as you!
  16. Good morning Laramie! I like the Dr Who and pink! :)

  17. Still thinking of you and your family and sending you my sympathies. It's really awful for you all to have to deal with this and I feel for you all.

  18. Yes it's been good so far thanks - except the weather has been pretty awful today! It's just been thundering again! Are you having a restful day tomorrow?

My daughter is keen on art and we were talking yesterday about her possibly trying to get into the design side of things like book covers.

  19. I'm really looking forward to reading this!
  20. Yes it does look a lovely cover - I really like the colours. Did you have any say in the design of it? My daughter certainly judges books by there cover, although I've explained to her I would have missed some books like that.

  21. I have tried knitting on numerous occasion, but think I'm strange as my hands become incredibly uncomfortable and I then start becoming annoyed and fingers become achey and so on.............. I'm not sure why it has such a bad affect on me. Even though I don't get through masses of books, I have been steady in my reading since the beginning of the year. A good sign, as when I stop reading it's usually because there's too much in life (not the nice stuff!) going on.
  22. Hi there and welcome!
  23. I had toad in the hole!
  24. I've only read these 2 and thought they were both excellent! The Hitchhiker I read years ago along with the further books in the series. Marvin is such a hoot! Notes from an exhibition is on my TBR pile - I'm looking forward to reading it!
  25. I swap and buy - new and 2nd hand. I just have to look after the books that I read and I wouldn't buy a tatty 2nd hand copy as I would not get the same pleasure from reading it!. I'm sure that's a bit daft, but I do like a nice clean copy - preferably without a bent spine. My pet hate is stickers on books - can't possibly read a book unless I remove it!
