  1. I disagree as well. Technology is okay, but not when it tries to impose on my beloved pastime. I'm sure some may like the idea of hand-held computer books in the same way as online books. But I think it would be creepy to "replace" something I think of as warm and inviting with cold, hard plastic. That would be way too sci-fi for me!
  2. Welcome Beatrix! Since you're interested in all types of books this is the forum for you!
  3. Hi Janet! Thanks for adding me! I look forward to conversing with you more.

  4. Oh I'm Laura. Well, I read Sense & Sensibility several years ago and have a copy of Emma. I would love to read Persuasion soon also.
  5. I agree with you. Sometimes that can almost ruin a book for me, but your review of The Pirates Daughter makes me want to give it a try.
  6. I would be interested in this challenge. Sounds like fun. Here are a few of my suggestions: The Metamorphosis -Franz Kafka (1915), Gone With the Wind - Margaret Mitchell (1936), Forever Amber -Kathleen Winsor (1944), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Ken Kesey (1962), Peyton Place -Grace Metalious (1956), I'm The King Of the Castle - Susan Hill (1977), The Color Purple - Alice Walker (1982). I've never read any of these, but I think they all sound like good reads.
  7. When I finally finished Middlesex there was no doubt that it was a prize worthy work of art. It only made me wonder He is just the kind of fictional character that you wish would go on to have a nice life after the story is over.
  8. I'm reading Twilight by Stephenie Meyer and I've seen several references to other novels. The character Bella reads Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights and also references a few of Jane Austen's novels and characters. In Atonement by Ian McEwan the character Robbie often references books like D. H. Lawernce's Lady Chatterley's Lover and some from the 18th century. He even mentions Jane Austen.
  9. I agree! Television and video games have become the ultimate babysitter for parents who just won't take the time. I've always thought that books are essential for a child's development especially in the early years before they even learn to read. The love of reading is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give a child.
  10. I have decided to extend my TBR pile. My short list will no longer be so short. It is my goal to finish these before the year ends despite my usual slow to finish trend. The list so far: Key= Books read Books not read Currently reading Atonement - Ian McEwan The Monsters of Templeton - Lauren Groff Middlesex - Jeffery Eugenides Dandelion Wine - Ray Bradbury (a reread) Farewell Summer - Ray Bradbury The Reserve - Russel Banks Mary Modern - Camille DeAngelis Garden Spells - Sarah Addison Allen Twilight - Stephanie Meyer New Moon - Stephanie Meyer Eclipse - Stephanie Meyer Breaking Dawn - Stephanie Meyer Harry Potter series (begining with book 2 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets)- J K Rowling The God of Small Things - Arundhati Roy The Amityville Horror - Jay Anson Interview With the Vampire - Anne Rice Emily of New Moon- L M Montgomery Dawn (series) - V C Andrews The Sugar Queen - Sarah Addison Allen Flowers in the Attic (series) V C Andrews Bound - Sally Gunning
  11. There is nothing like Jane Austen! I finally read it this spring after having a copy for years. I loved it too!
  12. I don't really care very much for (auto)biographies. The only one I have read and own is Marylin Monroe's My Story. It was a very enjoyable read and I learned so much about who she was as a person.
  13. I've just started Twilight and I'm so glad I did! I think it is written in a way that young adults and adults can relate to Bella's experiences. Especially loving the descriptions of Edward's piercing and smoldering gazes.
  14. I finished Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenides, which was definitely a great novel. The story covers three generations of Calliope Stephanides' family, which includes how a mutated gene and family secret her grandparents carried causes Cal to be born a hermaphrodite. I don't want to give much away, so I'll just say it was very interesting and I highly recommend it to all readers. This is the first novel by Jeffery Eugenides that I have read and would like to check out more of his writing. His Pulitzer for this novel was well deserved. Now I have begun Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. On chapter 7 and loving it so far! I can't wait to finish.
  15. That is one way I usually pick a book as well unless I find a book by an author I know. But for example, if I were in the mood for a romantic story I am more apt to pick the book with the pretty cover than the book with a plain cover. Of course the synopsis must appeal to me or neither one is a go.
  16. My husband loves fantasy/scifi books and lately has been reading one right after the other. He went awhile without reading after he finished the last Harry Potter. He doesn't mind my reading, but it is me who has to take his book away from him at night so he can get enough sleep for work!
  17. I've only read 18 books from that list and some are my favorites. Not a great number, but I guess that's okay. I have heard of a lot from that list and have seen movie versions of many of them (does that count? ). I don't really see myself consciously attempting to read more of them for the sake of "the list" itself.
  18. I'm half way through Middlesex right now and loving it, but haven't had many spare moments to read the last few days. At first, I thought a complete history on the genetic mutation that made Calliope a pseudohermaphrodite would be a bit boring, but I was wrong. It has been really interesting so far.

  23. Welcome to the forum Matt!
  24. I usually remember 1, 2, and 3, but it really does depend on how I liked the book and the length of time since it was read. Even now I can think of several books I enjoyed at the time but couldn't tell anyone the main characters names without looking.
  25. haha Wouldn't mind too much if he shows up as Christian Bale!! Mr. Darcy - Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen Heathcliff - Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte Scout - To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Cassandra- I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
