  1. The only books I have ever reread are Wuthering Heights and To Kill A Mockingbird because they are favorites of mine and because they were assignments in school. I just have too many new books on my shelf and ones that are calling my name at the library to even consider rereading anything. I agree with what Supergran said. I think it is like someone going home again after they've been away for awhile. Everything looks basically the same, but there are a few surprises to discover. It is nice to do that from time to time.
  2. When I read I tend to visualize my own scenery, but without any real effort. I just go with what first appears in my head. I vaguely imagine characters appearances but when a scene describes someone as blond while I've been imagining them with dark hair my mind has to halt and change the image. If I've seen a film version first there is no changing the characters in my mind.
  3. I am never too worried about any damage to books I lend because they are mostly hardbacks. It is never seeing the books again that I really hate. This usually only happens when I lend to one particular friend of mine. For example, one book has been gone for 5yrs and two for 2yrs. Needless to say, I will not lend to her again.
  4. I read Wicked and Confessions Of an Ugly Stepsister about a year ago and thought they were very creative. I read Wicked first and loved it. But I felt that Confessions was a bit of a let down, which is one reason I haven't read Son of a Witch or Mirror Mirror yet. I had forgotten about them so I think I may have to visit my library soon.
  5. I finished Garden Spells and it was an enjoyable summer read. The setting is a small town in North Carolina where everyone knows everyone, which includes quirks or abilities certain families possess. The story revolves around the two Waverly sisters, one who has always embraced her family's "gifts", and the other who has not, but returns to the safety of home with her little daughter despite this. It does have similarity to Practical Magic. I thought it was a fun and romantic read. I have started Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenides. I am only 66 pages in, but I think it is very interesting so far. Some chapters are a bit bogged down with details, but I can't wait to read more.
  6. wow! Is that for the rest of this year? Your braver than I:lol:. It looks like a lot of good reads. Can't wait to read your reviews.
  7. After all I've heard about Twilight by Stephenie Meyer it is definitely going in my TBR pile. I'm hoping to get my hands on a copy and it will be next after I finish Garden Spells.
  8. Welcome to the forum Marcia!
  9. I believe that as readers grow older they become more open to different types of books. But it doesn't necessarily come from our age, but from exposure to different books that reflect our interests and tastes. I agree with what JudyB said about "outside influences". When I was younger I was limited to my school library and now I have the internet and book clubs to explore. Of course tastes do change, but I find that I still gravitate toward certain types of books more than others.
  10. I just finished Ian McEwan's Atonement a few days ago and really enjoyed it, but found the beginning painfully slow. At one point I thought about putting it down. I'm interested in reading more of his novels, but I don't want to be bored by a lot of dull details. Are all of his novels like this?
  11. Wow A Lifetime Burning sounds like it would be really interesting. I usually try to steer away from books that are too sexually graphic, but the review sounded good. I think I'll add it to my TBR pile.
  12. I finally finished Atonementand have now begun Garden Spellsby Sarah Addison Allen. Over all I really enjoyed Atonement. I felt that the first few chapters were terribly slow and made me wonder if the rest was worth my time. But it turns out that it was! I give it 8.5/10 due to the slow beginning and what I felt were meaningless details. I definitely want to read more of Ian McEwan's novels. Garden Spells seems to be a fun and fairly fast read, but I have only read the first chapter.
  13. Don't give up radjack! Do you have a local library that might carry books you like? Or maybe some friends that have books you could borrow? I'm sure you'll figure something out!
  14. Welcome to the forum Emma! I like your avatar!
  15. I suggest you add To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. It is definitely one of the greatest American novels and is not to be missed. It's one of my top favorites. You won't be disappointed!
  16. Welcome to the forum Cassandra! Maybe someone will recommend a really boring book to help with your insomnia!
  17. Wow that is a good sized list, but I'm pretty sure your a fast reader! :readingtwo:The only two I've read from your list is Blue Smoke and Sense and Sensibility. I think you'll really enjoy Sense and Sensibility.
  18. I usually buy my books or use the library. My friend and I used to "borrow" each other's books a lot, but considering that I gave mine back and she still has three of mine from years ago, I decided not to do that anymore. So, in other words, there was no "swapping" on my end. Books that I no longer want to read usually get donated to the library.
  19. hehe. My sentiments exactly. I didn't like over half of my classmates then and I'm sure 10 yrs haven't made them more likable!
  20. Welcome to the forum Tambo! I'm sure you will discover a lot and have loads fun!

  23. I'm 26 almost 27! Wow, I can't believe my high school reunion is next year!
  24. I have just started Atonement by Ian McEwan. I am only on chapter two so I can't make a honest judgment yet. It is interesting, but seems a bit drawn out in places.
  25. Since I just started Atonement today and was out most of the day I am only half way through chapter two. But I have to say that it seems that some details are way too drawn out. I'm hoping I can get into it more.
