  1. Hiya, WillowFae. to the forum. What OU course are you doing? I've been thinking of doing one of them sometime.
  2. Hiya, Jazz! to the forum! I read Almost French a few years ago, and loved it.
  3. I have two of his (London and Sarum) that I have owned for ages, but have yet to read. Good to hear something positive about his books - it may motivate me to get cracking on them.
  4. It was made into a film - a superbly atrocious piece, starring Daryl Hannah as Ayla. I think given the right director and budget, it could be turned into something pretty decent.
  5. Oh no, you shouldn't have told me! I don't think I'll go, now that I seen all my books in storage that I have yet to read. Thanks for letting me know, though.
  6. Not with a serial, no. When I get fed up with a stand alone book, I'll skim through to the end, so I can see how it finishes. With a serial though, I just stop reading, though I do intend to finish it later. I stopped reading the His Dark Materials and The Black Magician Trilogy, both after the second book. I do plan on picking them up later, because I'm curious to see how they end. But if I'm fed up with reading something, I just can't force myself to read it any more, no matter how curious I am.
  7. I'm up to Chapter 38. I absolutely love how this book is written; one of my favourite bits of writing is the beginning of Chapter 28, when Frannie is in the kitchen making a pie, and then gets distracted - I think it's just brilliant writing how Stephen King shows her train of thought; so creative.
  8. How about one of Bill Bryson's travel books? They are so hysterically funny that I can't read them in public.
  9. Wow! That's gotta be a record! When you posted about this book fair yesterday, I had to resist the urge to ask where it was, because otherwise the same thing would have happened to me. Damn books, they'll get you every time!
  10. I know! It'll certainly keep me busy!
  11. Hi Susanne. to the forum!
  12. Forgot to add The Stand as my current chunker. At 1,421 pages of bliss, it definitely qualifies.
  13. You are too modest, Janet! It's lovely! Is that the paid Live Journal account? I love the colours, and the Grommit avatar. I only have the free Live Journal account, but I should still be able to do something similar. Of course, learning how to write reviews is another story altogther....
  14. It does, doesn't it? I'm really noticing that this time around. He makes things so interesting and quite easy to read. I'm still quite early in - Chapter 15.
  15. That's exactly why I prefer reading in the bedroom. Noise or other people around distract me, even if they are carrying on with their own thing. I also find lighting is a big factor. I can't read in anything short of bright light - otherwise I get really uncomfy and restless.
  16. I prefer to read in the bedroom alone. Sometime I can read in the lounge, on the sofa, but if hubby is there I always tend to get distracted.
  17. Hi Heather, to the forum! I'm a Stephen King fan too (re-reading The Stand, at the moment).
  18. Well, my TBR pile is extremely large, thankfully! I've just gone through all my boxes of books that I have left at my parents place, and there's loads of unread ones!! I was surprised at how many books I had. I'd forgotten about most of them. So.....at this rate, I'll probably get around to reading The Rule of Four in 2050.
  19. I joined LJ recently but haven't posted anything yet. Good idea - I will probably use that to post my thoughts/reviews. Is bagpuss_books on LJ? I did a search for it but couldn't find it. Thanks for the link. I will look into it. I really need to do something - not only to remember what I've read, but also to improve my writing style. I find I always use the same phrases to describe books; I'd like to be able to write something a bit more expressive and helpful!
  20. I've got yet another version - mine comes to 1,421 pages.
  21. Hi, babypinkcandygirl. to the forum.
  22. Oh no! I bought The Rule of Four from a library book sale and was quite looking forward to reading it. I think I'll push it down to the bottom of my TBR pile!
  23. I loved The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox. It's such a moving story, and a very well written book. You're in for a real treat.
  24. Ok, I will if you will! Given that there's now a Reading Circle thread on it, I think it will inspire a lot of people to give it a go. Mine is tucked away in a box somewhere, so when I dig it out (hopefully today), I'll get started! Edit: Found it!! I'm going to start reading it tonight.
  25. Noooooo! I'm with Kell on this one. Always go for the unabridged version! I haven't read the abridged version, but I can't think of anything that would benefit the story by being left out. Yes, I loved those bits. That's probably one of my favourite parts of the book. I wanted to mention that in another thread, but I just couldn't get my words out. Stu is mine too. I loved his character right from the word go, and even more so, when I saw Gary Sinise play him. Hmm, I may have to put aside The Other Boleyn Girl (as I never seem to be able to get past page 30 - purely due to circumstance and state of mind, not the book!), and pick The Stand up again.
