  1. It's that time of year again - well, nearly! World Book Day is almost upon us once more! Will you be doing anything special? Will you be attending any local events? Let us know! WORLD BOOK DAY WEBSITE VOTE ON THIS YEAR'S "BOOK TO TALK ABOUT" WIN
  2. I would say it's best eaten within 24hours if left in the fridge.
  3. There are a few music videos out that are just that little bit different; a little bit special. Whether they make you laugh or sit agog at the screen, which ones have you seen that made you go "Wow!" The latest one that caught my attention is Coldplay's . When I saw it for the first time last night from halfway through, I resolved to see it all, even though I'm not a fan of the band's music. When I saw it from the start, I was pretty much blown away - it's unlike any other music vid out there at the moment - completely innovative!
  4. I finally succumbed to the hype about this series of teen-vampire books. So, does it live up to the hype? To be honest, I didn't think it anything all that special - it's basically a teen romance with vampires and the story could have been almost identical even without the bloodsucking element. That's not to say it doesn't have its merits. It's incredibly easy to read and a lot of fun to boot. The characters are quirky, although, I'll admit I found Bella rather nauseating with her constant declarations of love for Edward and her near-terminal clumsiness - it just got a bit too much at times. I also couldn't understand why all the boys in town were falling over themselves to go out with her. Are they so devoid of female company in Forks? Edward, too, didn't actually strike me as anything all that hot. Yes, he's beautiful to look at, he's mysterious and brooding, but then, aren't almost all novel vampires? He just lacked that bit of "oomph" for me. That said, there was enough there to keep me entertained and just enough to keep me interested enough to try at least one of the sequels - we'll see where I go from there...

Not well, but I don't think I made it thick enough and I only gave him a tiny amount - I'll make 2 tsp tonight and make it a bit thicker to see if that does the trick. He seemed to really enjoy it though!

  6. What does everyone think about the ethics of cloning in general? Do you think we're anywhere near this kind of scenario as a reality? Is there any actual merit in having biologically engineered donor matches, whether in this way or grown outwith a host body? If this kind of cloning were to become a reality, would it be strictly for those who could afford it, or should it be made available for anyone who needs it (e.g. on NHS)? Do you think the author agrees with cloning? Is this novel a vision of a viable future, or a stark warning against it?
  7. No, this was my introduction to Meyers' work. I'll wait to see what I think of the rest of the Twilight Saga before I try The Host though...
  8. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer Synopsis: When 17 year old Isabella Swan moves to Forks, Washington to live with her father she expects that her new life will be as dull as the town. But in spite of her awkward manner and low expectations, she finds that her new classmates are drawn to this pale, dark-haired new girl in town. But not, it seems, the Cullen family. These five adopted brothers and sisters obviously prefer their own company and will make no exception for Bella. Bella is convinced that Edward Cullen in particular hates her, but she feels a strange attraction to him, although his hostility makes her feel almost physically ill. He seems determined to push her away? Until, that is, he saves her life from an out of control car. Bella will soon discover that there is a very good reason for Edward's coldness. He, and his family, are vampires? And he knows how dangerous it is for others to get too close. My thoughts: I finally succumbed to the hype about this series of teen-vampire books. Rating: 7/10 Other titles by this author: Twilight Saga - New Moon / Eclipse / Breaking Dawn The Host
  9. If you liked those illustrations, you should try The Edge Chronicles as Chris Riddell illustrates those too, and Paul Stewart's writing is every but as good as Gaiman's.
  10. It's a lovely, gentle film - very enjoyable, if a little long. Very sad too.

    Happy birthday!

  12. I still loove illustrions now - two of my 10/10 books of the past year or two have been The Plucker and The Devil's Rose (both by Brom) - they're both illustrated novels and absolutely beautiful. The artwork is amazing and really enhances the atmosphere of the novels.
  13. It is, indeed! Some superb performances from great actors - Winona Ryder is great in the lead role, but it's Angelina Joli who really stands out head and shoulders above the rest.
  14. I'd read the other books first, just to get the build-up of the stories as this works nice as a "looking back at the back history". Don't worry though - the whole series is excellent!
  15. Have you read Jane Eyre? If you have, you'll get all the little "in jokes" throughout The Eyre Affair. If not, you'll still be able to enjoy it, but you'll miss bits unless you know the story of JE quite well.
  16. Hope you enjoy Jane Eyre - I read it a little while ago and loved it!
  17. I have it on in the background just now...
  18. It is, indeed, Iggy!
  19. If Mr Izzard is involved I'll be very impressed (although IMDb don't mention him on the castlist...)
  20. Dream Theater Pink Floyd Can't go wrong with eaither of those - both prog rock, both excellent!
  21. I remember hedgehog crisps! I like the idea of the onion bhaji flavour ones though...
  22. Shows my age that I immediately thought Pet Shop Boys - LOL! I agree with him - both about X-Factor and TOTP.
  23. Chicken in tomato and basil sauce with pasta. Yummy!
  24. HERE it is! (I love this one too!)
  25. I have the book on Mount TBR (got it for Xmas). I recently saqw the film and thought it excellent, so I'm hoping the book is as good, if not better...
