  1. Yep I was wondering about him too, he's also disappeared from the books (and there wasn't any of that stuff with Melisandre in the books either). I've just read on imdb that filming on the next series will be delayed as they have to wait for a lot of wintry weather, so we'll have to wait even longer for winter to finally arrive properly
  2. They should be fairly widely available online, especially the more popular ones which have been made into films or TV series. good luck!
  3. Yeah it's amazing how much you can read when you're stuck on a train that isn't moving!
  4. I have quite a few nights like that Noll so I can sympathise, it's horrible when you have to get up and you feel like your head's soaked in cotton wool, hope it rights itself soon. That beach sounds like heaven, dtr!
  5. As someone else mentions above, Jamaica Inn - although the writing in Rebecca is much more sophisticated, JI works as an escapist yarn, with a twist near the end. I also like House on the Strand - time travel, and My Cousin Rachel, which is another psychological thriller with a bit of a kick at the end. Frenchman's Creek is OK, I'd call it a sunny, escapist romp but not much depth to it. I haven't read any of the others yet.
  6. Up to you Virginia, but if you don't like lots of sex and violence it might not be for you, and an awful lot happens in a short space of time (which is when it might be helpful to have read the books first, I'm always interested to see how non book readers manage to follow all the storylines). But there are some great characters and actors, which is the main reason I stick with it. In answer to Muggle Not, I think Jaime (maybe with Tyrion's help)?
  7. Hi Mauri, I've been to Rimini on holiday a couple of times, lovely beaches!
  8. Hi, welcome to the forum. I've read a few MHC books, they're easy reads but tend to be very formulaic, I think her earlier books are better than some of the more recent ones I've read. Moonlight becomes You is one of the better ones, a bit more on the Gothic side but with her usual theme of someone after another person's money!
  9. Elly Griffiths is an excellent author, her books are very easy to read, with a nice dry sense of humour too, I love Ruth Galloway.
  10. HI Daz and welcome, glad you've got back into reading!
  11. Hi Mauri and welcome, what part of Italy are you from? I like Italian crime - Montalbano, Donna Leon's Brunetti series, and other crime as well as historical and family saga eg Poldark. Enjoy using the forum.
  12. Hi Pete and welcome.
  13. I think the Potter books went off the boil after number 4, they got longer and bogged down in lots of details and I thought book 5 was quite repetitive. I was bored by book 6 and still haven't read book 7 - or maybe I just outgrew them? Whatever anyone thinks of the merits of the books, and of course, given the discussion above, everyone's entitled to their opinion, they've still been a publishing phenomenon which was, I think, a mixture of luck that it first become successful and then it all just snowballed, and once the movies started being made, there was, of course, no avoiding them! As David said, no one can predict what will become successful in film, books, TV series, and as many others have said, if they knew the secret of success they'd bottle it. I agree they didn't start to become popular until the 3rd book, but they seem to have got a lot of children (and adults) reading, and if those readers then move on to something, shall I say perhaps more sophisticated, then I don't see what's wrong, especially if they instil a love of reading into people who might otherwise not pick up a book.
  14. Have you tried googling that description? Might be worth a try!
  15. Yes great summing up Kell, interesting to see that it's mainly the women who seem to be in charge now. And we were all blindsided about a certain person's heritage.
  16. Well done for the clear out, that must feel very satisfying, have fun organising your wardrobe.
  17. This might seem a silly question but if you're not using your devices at night, why not just switch them off altogether? Something I've always been curious about.
  18. New month, same old weather ie raining off and on and windy too
  19. Yes I remember BR being in the dark a lot, and lots of rain too!
  20. Oh well I'm out of the office sweepstake, I had England (not that bothered actually, about what I expected!)
  21. It was the rain mainly - lots of heavy rain in a few hours = floods, blocked roads etc, and lightning strikes caused quite a few signal failures on the trains (although that 's not much different to a normal day).
  22. Yes I think this series was one of the best, certainly a big improvement on series 5, which I thought was the weakest. And yes, lots of cheering moments in the last 2 episodes. I think there will only be one more series, but it will be split into two (an annoying habit lately, along with splitting final instalments of film franchises into 2 parts), one 7 episodes long, the other 6, but that remains to be seen. The books are great apart from the 5th one, which I thought dragged and had far too much telling and not enough showing.
  23. Have you read "The Invisible Ones" by Stef Penney? That's set in a traveller/gypsy community.
  24. I'm just wondering what Varys's agenda is - won't say any more for fear of spoilers
