  1. Just as well they lifted the 200 book limit, it was a bit silly for a book-related website anyway!
  2. I've noticed that the nights have started to draw in all of a sudden, it was dark by 8.30 last night, I had to rush to get my plants watered before it got too dark to see what I was watering!
  3. One day I'll fly away - Randy Crawford
  4. I love your explanation of "on the shelf" Pontalba, most of mine are "on the floor" but I get your meaning! I've read a couple of Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole books and enjoyed them.
  5. hi Miss Liss and welcome!
  6. Don't tell me James Patterson is now trying his hand at the "50 Shades of Grey" genre!
  7. Hi Laura I love the Sookie Stackhouse books, the first four are the best I think, after that they get a little bit erratic, but there are plenty of other characters with strange powers to meet. Hope you get to read some more of them and enjoy them.
  8. Peaches for M le Cure is the 3rd in the Chocolat series, she's written quite a few other books as well. I've only read Chocolat so far out of the 3.
  9. I loved the Lewis Trilogy, I suppose it could be a bit depressing though! I actually thought it was slightly different to the usual formulaic crime stuff ie murder is committed and is investigated, as so much of it is linked to the detective's past, but the other 2 books follow the same idea, so you probably won't like those, and are wise not to bother with them. I did love the descriptions of the island though, it was almost a character in it's own right.
  10. Yes it was chilly in the shade but nice now.
  11. Sorry to hear about Bella, I've just posted on the other thread, at least she isn't suffering any more, but so sad when they're only young. Sorry to hear about the cockerel too, Athena.
  12. It's terrible about the dog, do they not have a branch of the - is it ASPCA - nearby? Or a similar charitable organisation? I hope she's not suffering too much longer, poor mite.
  13. That sounds exciting Brian, hope you get a start date soon and good luck! At least the flights aren't too long, so no jet lag hopefully!
  14. That's quite a pile Athena, hope you enjoy them all. Irish names are fascinating, they sound lovely but totally different to how they look written down!
  15. 50 Shades of Grey Any misery memoir Any memoir by someone who was on a reality show (whether they won or not) Can't think of another two.
  16. Enjoy your day flip. Hope your rash gets better Nollaig. I had a similar one once on my legs, also from grass I think, and I found that aloe vera - the green stuff - really helped.
  17. Thought it was about time I started a log on here. Just finished the 7th book in the Poldark series ("The Angry Tide") which was hugely enjoyable but a little political occasionally as Ross is now a Member of Parliament. But his rivalry with George Warleggan is as strong as ever, and his marriage to Demelza is on shaky ground, and their attempts to get back on track aren't helped by Ross's recklessness. And there's a shock at the end too. 8/10 Also just finished Falling Love by Donna Leon, another entry in the Venice-set series featuring Commissario Guido Brunetti, who is called in to help when his friend, opera singer Flavia Petrelli, seems to have a stalker. Probably not the best book I've read in this series, but still enjoyable, with it's cynical sense of humour intact. 7.5/10
  18. Bit muggy today, bit i's a holiday weekend so no work tomorrow, yay
  19. I had a look at Good Reads, but prefer Library Thing, it seems more user friendly.
  20. Only ones I subscribe to are the Radio Times and Newbooks Magazine, and I read my mum's Saga Magazine too.
  21. Donna Leon's novels, set in Venice, tend to feature a lot of food, her main character is always going home or into a bar for a snack or lunch, I think she even brought out a cookbook with some of the recipes from the books. And they always seem to be eating in Harry Potter. The Little Paris Bookshop also has some recipes at the back.
  22. I suspect one of the reasons why Shakespeare is mentioned quite often is to do with the way people were taught at school. We analysed the plays we studied so much that it got too technical, and isn't a very interesting way of teaching him. The same with Jane Austen - all the talk of syntax and various other things went completely over my head, and I was bored. Although I'm still not that keen on Shakespeare now to be honest
  23. The Woman in Blue by Elly Griffiths The Last Confession of Thomas Hawkins by Antonia Hodgson Moving by Jenny Éclair The Magician's Assistant by Ann Patchett Persuasion by Jane Austen
  24. Yesterday was horribly hot, travelling was unbearable - yep Transport for London, the organisation that air conditioning (apart from about 3 tube lines) forgot...and the bus was even worse, not much better at home although it did cool down a bit, then heated up again, had a brief shower just before 2200, then it got really hot during the night and I woke at about 2.30 and it was awful. Cooler today and looking like rain, just in time for lunch of course!
