Thanks! We will see in the next few days about the midterm... just how I did. I knitted for HOURS tonight, my hands even ache lol I am having trouble with "the knit stich" The embroidery is going well though the needle hurts my fingers as I push it through. The pillow case pattern is butterflies and flowers, the butterflies will be blue

Ya, and it makes it worse that I know this lol too much history in my brain!
-
I've heard good things, but it sounds too complicated for me . I'd describe his work like Chuck Palahniuk meets Hunter Thompson. Then he has some waaaay out there stuff like...Ubik. Spell check does not like 'Ubik'
-
Well, he will write like, he went into the store... so I guess I am wrong and that is 3rd *blush*

For what its worth (and from me in this genre, next to nothing but...), Gaia recommended Phillip K. Dick and I would second that. I read A Scanner Darkly this year and it ended up on my top 10 of all time. I only read "soft" sci fi like Heinlein's Starship Troopers or Brandon Sanderson's Steelheart... but both of those have an apocalyptic thing goin' on too, so. Edit- I would not consider A Scanner Darkly "soft" though.

I had my American history midterm today. *Whew* glad that is over! All the studying I did over the holiday really helped and I was done in about 90 minutes out of 120. Also in a desperate attempt to get some life into my life I have started embroidering again and plan on taking a knitting course. Plans to join the book club is still a goal too!

No, no, it just goes in spurts like that sometimes Two years ago, I got to 103, last year only 87 Plus, you have a job, I have no excuse! I love reading when its just drizzling out, not really raining but just misting and not totally dark skies... but I like sitting under the patio on sunny days as well

That's cool, I've got that on the back, back burner as I saw part of the show and didn't like it (sorry Steve lol). Thought maybe the book would be better, didn't realize it was a trilogy, so it'll probably be on the stove a lot longer now I finished Born on the Fourth of July, it was really good. Don't know what is next, but I have a fair amount of History reading to get through before I have some personal reading time. I liked the sample for Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen, but am not too keen on a 600+ page book, especially since I have World Without End going as a continuous read.

Wow- great progress from everyone!! Noll, I can't believe it! I only got through the rest of Born on the Fourth of July and several samples. I'd say I got in about 80 pages yesterday. So, I ended up with a measly 335 for the weekend. Which is basically what I do on a regular day (about 115 a day, not 335, those days... I hope are not gone *sigh*)

Title: Born on the Fourth of July Author: Ron Kovic Genre: Autobiography Pages: 225 Dates: 7/3- 7/5 This book tells the story of American Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic and was also made into a movie with an amazing performance by Tom Cruise. Being that it was the 4th of July, Independence Day in the US, I decided to read this book about the life of pacifist Ron Kovic. Told in both first and second person in alternating chapters and events, the memoir is more about Kovic’s mind set and trauma from his paralysis than war. Actually, it is more a testament to peace. War only takes up a few chapters and is integral to the story- but the aftermath of Vietnam takes center stage for Kovic’s actions and feelings in the book. Great book, some graphic images (that can be imagined with this type of book. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBADjCeFnuU

lol I counted them as 5 pages each I just count monthly pages at this point in the year. Besides, if I counted how many books I've read this year, I would seriously depress myself and I am already not feeling the best
-
Eh, I am exhausted after today's 4th of July festivities. I still managed 100 pages of Born on the 4th of July today. Its 2:00 but I am still counting pages, as I haven't gone to sleep yet, so it is sort of Saturday still But, I am done for the night... or should I say morning?

I am the Short Story advocate and converter lol I suggest Andy Weir's free ones on his site, go to One Off's. http://www.galactanet.com/writing.html With Howey it is hard because I love almost everything I've read by him, but I would suggest either The Walk Up Nameless Ridge or Glitch. The Walk Up... is 18 pages and Glitch is 5,000 words.

I don't know about the female perspective part, of course, but I do know you read a lot of books about women characters, the sisters in Walk Me Home by Catherine Ryan Hyde and Becoming Chloe, Close Your Eyes, Hold Hands by Chris Bohjalian and The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden are just some that come readily to mind.

I did 75 pages of Ken Follett's World Without End and 80 pages of Ron Kovic's Born on the Fourth of July Total- 155 pages
-
I read it... it tied for my "Best book of 2014" with An Abundance of Katherines by John Green
-
Not a fan of short stories You should read some of Hugh Howey's independent ones! And I can't believe you raised your goal lol
-
The book group I want to join have that as the book I'd be reading for the August meeting (well, July is The 100 Year Old Man... but I have school so my attendance is pending ).
-
I started Ron Kovic's Born on the Fourth of July today.

Fireworks (except for the big displays) are banned in my area, so we will see ours from a park, maybe a desert picnic. Before that, a barbecue of hamburgers and hot dogs and a breakfast of blueberry pancakes! I have a HUGE final to study for though, and I want to do the read a thon, so...
-
Or some jazz going as background for your obscenity lol I'd recommend listening to it, its in 3 parts on you tube
