  1. I hate to abandon Devil in the White City, but I am afraid it needs to go. I just can't take anymore architect talk. Shame, I really wanted to like this book.
  2. I've never heard of David Coe- is that Fantasy as well? I so want you to enjoy Follett And how many Outlander books are there?? Oh- and I liked the review for TWoA
  3. I am not impressed with Erik Larson's Devil in the White City. I don't want to abandon it, but geez, its testing me.
  4. Ya, pretty disturbing! He got down to 120 pounds
  5. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
  6. Delirium by Lauren Oliver is overtaking my other two reads Today I am focusing on Philippa Gregory's The Kingmaker's Daughter... if I can stay away from Delirium!
  7. I noticed that, when Gaia mentioned her to me. I was looking for a dystopian and she suggested the Delirium series, which I thought you might have read. I guess Before I Fall is Oliver's big one, it sounds interesting as well. But I am digging Delirium. The society has a "cure" for love to give everyone at 18... of course, the main character is not quite 18 yet
  8. Have you read any Lauren Oliver?
  9. ha ha I am worse then... my 7 year old is in love with Jim Parsons I plan on watching the pilot for Man in the High Castle today, it is an original Amazon series. The trailer looked good, I am anxious to see the society created.
  10. I am sort of in the opposite case of BB- everything I am reading or read is good. I just added Lauren Oliver's Delirium to my mix (thanks Gaia!). It's a trilogy. So that makes two series going at the same time and I am still reading Devil in a White City as well
  11. I must say, I have held off on this one. And really, there is NO shortage of CRH books
  12. That is so awesome, thanks for that I might take you up on that PM, especially when I feel like a loser later in the semester I'm glad you got to see Paper Towns, I know you were anxious to see it... the web says it opened in the US at the end of July, but I never heard a thing. Does that seem right? Very interesting Today we thought school was over at 2:30 when it was over at 1:15 Thanks for your support, that's nice to say I hope you enjoy your new books, I have always wanted to get to Frankenstein. I tried Brave New World, but I think its due another try sometime soon
  13. I read something today from my text book on short stories that I thought was interesting and related to Carver and what you said above (I am teaching myself the text book in a vain attempt to try and accomplish something after giving up the semester... more on that in August thread): As the novelist EM Forester understood, plot not only answers the question what happens next, but also suggests why. [...] To plot is to move from asking the question and then what happened? to the question why did it happen? I guess Carver and Howey are the best at accomplishing this in just a few pages. But they also leave the questions of "and then what happened" and "why did it happen" to the reader, which is something, I guess I like. Imaginative, maybe? Sorry, thought you said above that you HAD read Coldtown. I haven't been feeling too great lately. I am interested to read it though, as I have never read anything by Holly. Carver's stories are also the plot base for Short Cuts, a movie by Robert Altman. Its not that great though, I think the script was ok'd by his widow.
  14. You're Welcome America: A Final Night With George W Bush with Will Ferrell as Bush, on Broadway... absolutely hilarious.
  15. Thanks! I really, have already been enjoying my reading more. Since I am taking the fall semester off of school, I am eager to read the way I want now! But I heeded your warning about the review, so now I do I did get the rating though- I am glad you liked it. One of the comments had a spoiler, but it makes me want to read it next, sounds like what I am looking for after all the history I am reading. Well, Carver always has a reason to tell his tale, but sometimes at the end they leave you thinking, and I think that's great. It's sort of like Fight Club.... there really isn't a point, but man, it makes you wonder WTF Glad to hear Girl With a Pearl Earing is good, I look forward to it and also Chevalier's The Last Runaway, which Amazon was so kind to recommend So you liked Forest better than Coldtown?
  16. I am starting a new philosophy about my reading for the rest of the year. I am currently at 57 short stories and books for the year and I have decided I am not going to care about how many I read this year, I just want to have fun and lately, I either lose my motivation or like to read two books at once. So I don't know what the heck I am doing I will be finishing Philippa Gregory's Cousins War series and then move on to her Tudor Court series. These are also some of the books I plan on reading for the rest of the year, any input would be great. Books for short term as of 8/19/15 Make Me (Jack Reacher 20)- Lee Child (Release September 8) Undermajordomo- Patrick deWitt (Released September 15) Selected Stories 1968- 2004- Alice Munro (own) Station Eleven- Emily St. John Mandel Total Recall- Phillip K. Dick (Read a thon) A Man Called Ove- Fredrik Backman Crimes in Southern Indiana- Frank Bill Full House- Maeve Binchy (Read a thon) The Coldest Girl in Coldtown- Holly Black Fay- Larry Brown The Girl With the Pearl Earing- Tracy Chevalier The Girl With All the Gifts- M.R. Carey Eddie & Sunny- Stacey Chochran (Read a thon) Absolutions: Notes for a Novel- Patrick deWitt The Round House- Louise Erdrich At the Water's Edge- Sara Gruen Sugar- Deirdre Riordan Hall
  17. Sure! You might also consider Howey's The Shell Collector. Carver might be different from what you normally read, but sometimes that's a good thing Then again, according to my mom, I like things without a point!
  18. Thanks- but I didn't even go I am very disappointed my myself. I think I just need to take this semester off. Still, I feel like I've let myself and everyone I know, down. I hope your appointment goes well and that you can get to more Mistborn soon
  19. I hope it picks up, I'm sure it will! Right now, its sort of a
  20. Just found out I can loan my Howey's, so if you want to read one, let me know.
  21. Watched The Machinist, first time for my mom, a re watch for me. She said it didn't have much of a point
  22. We are way behind on all of this, mine starts Wednesday. She has outgrown EVERYTHING over the summer, shoes, shirts, jeans, etc. Don't you just love that? Speaking of starting school,, I start my Critical Thinking in Literature class tomorrow, but I am not sure how much critical thinking I want to do lol I have nearly talked myself out of this class and it doesn't help that the textbook isn't appealing either. There is another literature class that I want at a different school, so I will try and get into that college for the spring.
  23. I am wearing what has become my out of school uniform lol Blue palazzo pants with a t shirt, either black or grey or a loose red shirt. I have been wearing flip flops with big white flowers on them Its really hot here, about 100F so, ya. I usually dress up more for school.
  24. A delicious iced caramel coffee with almond milk! I am trying it just now, its by Gevalia. I am having it iced because it is about 90F/ 32C and is supposed to be 100 later today, its only 11:30!
  25. I think Devil in the White City by Erik Larson is my next read, but the beginning is Oh- also, if you missed my post in an earlier thread, the book is being made into a movie with Leonardo Di Caprio and Martin Scorsese
