I still can't post book cover photo's Title: The Fever Author: Megan Abbott Genre: Science Fiction Pages: 321 Dates: 6/7- 6/12 Something is making teen girls sick in the small town of Dyden. It starts with a circle of friends, with just the main character, Deenie, mysteriously not becoming afflicted with the disease. Could it be the late night swim they took in a banned algee filled lake? Then more girls at the school get sick. Or is it something other than the lake? Megan Abbott has a pretty smooth story going with this one, although it could have been about 50- 60 pages shorter. It was a good story though, one that lead up to the conclusion in an obvious way, but it was interesting to see how it played out. Lost it's thread about 80% in and was a little rough, but recovered ok. Held my attention and I would have finished two days ago, but had jet lag, so if not for that, I could have easily finished it in a few days. Good YA book, good on the creepiness factor. A first for me with this author. The characters are well developed, the dialogue and motivations of the characters make sense and the story is a good one.

Prepare to love it!

I saw my post at the top of the page saying maybe TTV would slow you down, but I guess not I'm glad you liked the Sofie Rozendaal book, it sounds interesting.

We are having a heat wave here as well, 90- 102. I think Seattle is one of the most beautiful cities and the surrounding area- wow! I love living on the pacific coast

I keep trying to get a good run going on Megan Abbott's The Fever, but I get either jet lagged or ill and I can't really focus too much too long. I want to get to the end and move on!! Then I have a crucial decision- read what I want, or read something I sort of want, in order to start attending a nearby book club!

They are all books on my short list too... well, I found this book club that meets near my moms house and one of their reads will be All the Light We Cannot See so I guess I will be reading it (In a few days they will be discussing Wild, then The 100 Year Old Man...). I'll be interested to hear what you think of Finders Keepers, and how much of Mr. Mercedes is tied in, or not. It's great your wife is such a reader, it must be nice. I know you said she really loved Nightingale, that one will probably be at the end of the year for me. But then again, never know lol PS- I always enjoy your posts and our CRH love

Movies You're Looking Forward to in 2015
Anna Begins replied to Karsa Orlong's topic in Music / TV / Films
When is The Martian coming out? I've been lalalalala ing the movie clips and talk since I haven't read it yet. Should I read it first? OMG I can't wait! I am hoping the movie theater does a marathon showing of all the movies again -
I will snip it here too Points made. I did say I would recommend it though, as I think it was an amazing world and very well written, just as long as I knew the person I was recommending it to. I was just unprepared for all the I did want to say though, that as much as I think it was irresponsible, I would never not want to see a book published, especially a controversial one.

I didn't either, but it was some 45 years ago (the murders). Big profile of him on the news last night

Its fine with me, it was my review

I read your interview after I had posted my review and did see that O'Neill had struggled with an eating disorder- and when I read that, and think about the book I have just read, it doesn't surprise me. Once an Ana, always an Ana. You know, I really am the very last person that would tell anyone what to say, write, censor, etc. so that is NOT my intent with my review at all. But I will still stand by my calling the book irresponsible. That doesn't mean she shouldn't have written it, or it shouldn't have been published. You as well as anyone know the stuff I read, I don't believe in that. My issue is with how ingrained an eating disorder gets into you, its nearly impossible to get out of it. There are pro anorexia websites where girls will LOVE this book. It could end up being someone's bible. But if its not one thing, it'd just be something else. Anorexics almost look for acceptance in society, they find it in small ways, the lyrics from Radiohead stick in my head to this day... "I don't care if it hurts, I wanna have control, I want a perfect body, I wanna perfect soul...". Finding out Victoria Beckham eats only frozen grapes can make someone's week. If she is "recovered", then yes, I think I would call this book irresponsible, as she knows very well the impact and worming its way into a psyche it can have. I don't know if anyone can truly be "recovered" from an eating disorder.

Wow! That is a lot of reading! Maybe TTV will slow you down a bit

Wow- great progress! I'll definitely be in for July. The 4th is Independence Day and we usually have a lot with that, but I'll be reading anyway. I sort of had a mini read a thon. There was no way my jet lag was going to let me read Friday or Saturday, but yesterday, Sunday, I read 140 pages of Megan Abbott's The Fever, stopping at 42%- whew!

Went to a library sale yesterday and no, I didn't buy anything for me, but I did pay $1.50 for about 7-10 books for my daughter's summer reading. I plan on teaching her how to review books I found some great hardbacks in the literature category, which I might have to go back and get. Leaves of Grass, Grapes of Wrath... I just don't have space!! I also found THREE book clubs in my area. Here's what they are reading: The one by my mom's house sounds the most promising- ie, more youngish people because its run late, 1830-1930 every third Thursday. For June 18th, they are reading Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Coast Trail, by Cheryl Strayed July 16th. The 100 Year Old Man... August 20th, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr The one by my house, is a lot older, I think, because the club meets from 1300- 1400, the second Thursday of the month. They are reading: June 11th: The Underground Girls of Kabul: In Search of a Hidden Resistance in Afghanistan by Jenny Nordberg July 9th: Family Furnishings Select Stories 1995- 2014 by Alice Munro Which, all of those books sound cool and like something I would read anyway. Then there is the one 10 minutes or so from my house that meets the first Friday of every month and you just talk about what book you are reading. That's at 10:00 and I'd love to go to that one. I guess I will know when school starts, how much time I will have. I'd like to "drop in" for The 100 Year Old Man... discussion to try it out, as I've already read it. Or I could just jump right in and start with Wild

My next 3 planned reads are: A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore (400 pages) Can not wait for this one. 12 by Sean Platt and David Wright (430 pages) *Just out May 12th The Box by Hugh Howey (15 pages) *Just out May 22nd/ How can I resist a short Howey??

I couldn't make it through 50 pages of The Cuckoo's Calling, so you should like it just fine
-
ha ha we did Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in High School, its pretty funny (you've seen the movie, I assume?). I loved The Green Mile and Mr. Mercedes was good too (if you liked 11/22/63, you will probably like Mr. Mercedes as well). I hope you like Pigs in Heaven, its one of the books that got me reading again in my late teens/ early 20's. I didn't get on with the Hastings though, hopefully you'll like it more than I did (I talked a bit about it in the What are you reading thread).

Thanks for reading all those! I will PM you about Legend. I just realized yesterday that we had forgotten. Too many other things, I guess
