And another Kindle Sample is added to the list...
-
Yes, (as of today) 15 days is a bit much for a book. Just for 730 pages. 70% finished so far. But 30% left to go sounds better!

I did, actually. After 20+ minutes and all that transferring business with Customer Serivice, I just went into the store and they had it fixed and explained to me how to fix it in about 2 minutes. I ordered an email of the conversation I had with the tech support guy. The first two lines went: Me: When my daughter watches any videos on you tube or movies on Netflix, after 20 minutes, it stops and goes back to the home screen. Tech: That's disappointing. I mean, seriously??? Edited: BTW it was the RAM that was almost used up. If anyone with a Galaxy Tab has this problem, I can help!

I'm not sure what I'm going to read- probably 12 Years a Slave. I (hopefully) will have finished The Fountainhead before then! I love read-a thons. This one might just be my last one I really enjoy as I will be in school in beginning August 13th. September might be just my text book Unless I can get away with something more... enjoyable.

Night, Dawn and Day are 3 of my favorite non fiction books written by Elie Wiesel. And another one of my favorite books is Unbroken by Laura Hilldenbrand about Louis Zamperini, a downed and captured WW2 pilot. It was no 1 on the NY Times Best Sellers List for 178 weeks and is being made into a movie directed by Angelina Jolie. I like Non- fiction and learning about people's lives. I like historical non fiction too, like with Alison Weir, who also writes historical fiction.

My TBR list this year keeps growing so I have to tone it down a bit and remind myself what I should be reading lol I went through all my Kindle Samples last night and cleared some out and then decided on these. I might even read them in that order, so if you read one before I do, let me know! I really want to read A Time to Kill, it's 2nd down from the bottom... might have to be moved up I do want to read World Without End too, but after The Fountainhead, I don't want another epic so close, ya know? I thought 12 Years a Slave would help that at 140 pages I think I'm gonna do more shorter stories too, for the rest of the year.

September 2014 Reading Circle Poll
Anna Begins replied to Timstar's topic in Previous Reading Circle Books
Tough for me too. I like Abraham Lincoln and Wolf Hall- which is on my TBR list for this year. Abe would just be a re-read. Although a really good one. Hm... -
Drove to the state capital today to see my doctor and get Luka groomed... it was 107F! Here, it is only 97 (107 is about 42C). It's an hour and 20 minute drive, one way. I am exhausted! Had a major panic attack on the way. So glad to be back home.

A new book about Harper Lee just came out, in Hardback and Kindle called The Mockingbird Next door: Life with Harper Lee (released July 15, 2014) To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is one of the best loved novels of the twentieth century. But for the last fifty years, the novel’s celebrated author, Harper Lee, has said almost nothing on the record. Journalists have trekked to her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, where Harper Lee, known to her friends as Nelle, has lived with her sister, Alice, for decades, trying and failing to get an interview with the author. But in 2001, the Lee sisters opened their door to Chicago Tribune journalist Marja Mills. It was the beginning of a long conversation—and a great friendship. Mills was given a rare opportunity to know Nelle Harper Lee, to be part of the Lees’ life in Alabama, and to hear them reflect on their upbringing, their corner of the Deep South, how To Kill a Mockingbird affected their lives, and why Nelle Harper Lee chose to never write another novel.

Fifty Shades of Grey, E.L. James
Anna Begins replied to juliejuliebee's topic in Women's Fiction / Chick Lit
The trailer is out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjWrXLhYg7Q (Contains some racy material 1:45 in, for about 15 seconds) I have to say, I don't like the Christian Grey actor but it looks better than I thought it would. -
No, but I have seen... He was on Saturday Night Live. My favorite thing he did for the show, was write a series of shorts for SNL with Chris Parnell. He is really well known for Lazy Sunday: https://screen.yahoo.com/snl-digital-short-lazy-sunday-000000173.html

I think there are certain central themes to YA Dystopian books. Hunger Games could have taken elements from Stephen King (Richard Bachman)'s The Long Walk. Some of Divergent has some elements of Hunger Games. The premise of Firestarter (King) also comes to mind, maybe even the dystopian A Haindmaids Tale, where certain people are selected to "help" the government or society. I will be reading The Maze Runner in the next couple of months, I am trying to decide whether to see the movie first or read it first.

Thanks- I'm still getting used to listening to/ using them.

I am just beginning audio books. Are the HP ones easy to "read"/ understand if you haven't already read the books? Amazon doesn't even have the audiobook, but I think my library does.
-
Ya but you can't buy them from Amazon, just rent through the 600,000 library. You can buy them through Pottermore through Amazon. Unless I'm mistaken, but that is all it says when I click on Sorcerers Stone. I believe she has always sold them through B&N though.

We had an annual concert we used to go to once when we were younger, and one year, this band that was on first, called Rage Against the Machine. No one had really heard them at this point. So we got our blanket down on the grass, our bags and water- then they came on! A HUGE mosh pit ensued and all our stuff went a flyin'! That was MY intro to Rage I saw them quite a few times after that and still listen to Renegades and Battle of Los Angeles. "Born of a broken man, but not a broken man..." They also have a cover of Cypress Hill's I Could Just Kill a Man, which is pretty darn cool. I also saw Soundgarden so close, my hair blew a bit! Man, Chris Cornell was gorgeous then.
-
I don't really like them either. I have a Microsoft Surface with a keyboard and it acts as a laptop for me. I got the Tab for my daughter to play games and watch you tube and Netflix. I love my Kindle Fire, but I don't use it for posting or any writing. Oh- and you can just call me Anna
-
I'm glad - I wish some would rub off on me. I don't even miss them that much- although I am curious, so I might return to them. I dunno, jury is out. Everyone I know- and you and Tim- including my mom and dad, think I'm being ridiculous , so maybe I am.

Chuck Palahniuk is coming out with a new book called Beautiful You, but the Amazon description is too explicit to post. His last, Damned was horrible- IMO- but I will at least read the sample for this one and probably the book too. Out October 21st in the US. He also just came out this month with a collection of "transgressive fiction", called Burnt Tongues. From Amazon: Transgressive fiction authors write stories some are afraid to tell. Stories with taboo subjects, unique voices, shocking images—nothing safe or dry. Burnt Tongues is a collection of transgressive stories selected by a rigorous nomination and vetting process and hand-selected by Chuck Palahniuk. These stories run the gamut from horrific and fantastic to humorous and touching, but each leaves a lasting impression. Some may say even a scar.

I've seen you lurking about and enjoy your posts. Stick around- we aren't scary! The board can be a bit daunting at first though with so many categories and threads (I just go to Read New Content). I love your name and it's meaning! Thanks for the introduction!
