Which books could become classics?
Anna Begins replied to emelee's topic in General Book Discussions
Ya know, I've been pondering this one. It might, it just could become one. I don't know though, in 200 years, maybe all the violence would seems not as...violent. Just as luck would have it, that would be the one of his- not Damned or Choke, etc. And I think The Kite Runner is a good one too. -
Wooohooo! Where you headed?

I've tried everything I can think of and now I have to go in store for a "complete reboot and cache". I have to bring my laptop and her USB cord so they can download all her apps and games, then their reboot thing, then transfer all of it back. Is this going to screw up my computer too?

Anyone?

Which books could become classics?
Anna Begins replied to emelee's topic in General Book Discussions
Oh- I totally get your point. I merely posted the list because it did have some contemporary books on it and some recognizable ones, just for comparison. Definitely A Tale of Two Cities can be considered a classic. Now, which could be a modern classic, one can only decide. A best seller like HP or a lesser selling book, but popular too- like A Handmaids Tale? I'm not sure about the last 20 years, some say A Handmaids tale, I might be bias because I hated it, some, The Hunger Games, again, bias because I loved it or The Help, I haven't gotten to it yet. I guess the question is for everyone, what is a classic and what is a classic to you. Then. maybe we can figure out, somewhat, what a new classic would be. Timeless? Best written? Best selling? I dunno that's why I stayed out of this thread Your comment on the quality of writing vs sells got me thinking about it. -

Here is a list of Best Selling books according to wiki. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_books I thought The Little Prince topped the list, but it's Tale of Two Cities at 200 million copies sold. Edit: oddly 3 of my favorite books are in the 30 million range (Gone With the Wind, Valley of the Dolls and The Thorn Birds). -
Dipsomaniac- Someone who has an uncontrollable craving for alcohol. A medical term for periodic, compulsive bouts of alcohol intake. Hmm.

I can TOTALLY see that about a Nirvana fan feeling like the mainstream-ness of Foo Fighters being too much. I wouldn't consider myself a "fan" but I feel like you do about him being down to earth, decent guy, etc. Krist Novoselic was busy around here, working on political reform and campaign finance reform (basically putting a cap on how much you can spend in an election from special interest groups). I don't know now though, that was a while ago. And Rage! Where were they during Bush?? My friend and I constantly talk about this because they were so anti-establishment when it was Clinton- of all people- but then, Bush gets in TWICE and not one of them complains, speaks out, etc? Kinda lets me down. System of a Down I've never listened to much, basically they never had many hits here, maybe more in Southern California where they are from (google, a girls best friend) but I did hear a lot of them in Dublin, oddly.

I assume it is England's History and Culture, not America's We don't have so much of that here

Ya but, at least we got the Foo Fighters Re: Soundgarden, I was the same way with Rage Against the Machine. Then, they ended up with Chris Cornell as singer (well, as Audioslave, or whatever )!

I know, I know- it seems huge but when I read it last year, it totally flew by. It's epic. Like, Gone With the Wind epic. But I'll save all that for the review Not sure about the Rory Gilmore book challenge though.... Oh no, not at all. I'm studding for a degree in English. It started just for fun, then I had to take an entrance exam and a basic English course just to take the classes I wanted (the fun ones!!) so, I decided, if I'm going through all that, just to read, why not do something with it. Plus, I'm on disability with a 5 year old, so I have to do something!

I am 60% into it. It is good, but not as good as Atlas Shrugged. Atlas Shrugged could definitely be a classic, but it came out in the 50's (I believe). I've been keeping notes and will post a review in a few days Thanks for asking! -
To me, it is a bit creepy that they would choose someone that sounded like him, but maybe they just want to stay true to their sound. I dunno, it used to bother me, but now that I've heard what you think of them now, I might check out some of their stuff too. I'd love to have some new Alice In Chains around me!

Is anyone else's Kindle Fire running out of memory? How much memory did you buy? What is the solution?

I am frustrated and have a problem. Problem #1- We have a Samsung Tab... (lol ya, but not really) The real problem: Everytime my daughter watches you tube video or Netflix movie for over 20 minutes, the screen goes back to the (blue) home screen. I tried adjusting the screen mode, but no avail. I also had her move her finger around once in awhile. Still goes back to home screen after a certain amount of time (about 20 mins). Does anyone have any suggestions? Customer service was a joke and I just got done telling them so. If you don't have a Samsung Tab, don't get one!

I hadn't thought of reviewing a text book! I might, that's a good way to put my notes and ideas together! I am enjoying The Fountainhead, although I was a bit stuck at 50% for awhile and it is taking me awhile. I'd suggest Atlas Shrugged first, while longer, it is more a love story and less philosophy, but don't feel daunted! I'm more daunted about school! Its been 20 years since I was in school. So that's why I'm starting off with just one easy class. Next semester is Algebra (I tested low in Math, I hate it) and English 1, College Composition. Then, I get to take all the fun English classes like- The Modern Novel, Intro to Mythology, Intro to the Short Story (looking forward to these in particular). Maybe I can even swing a History course in next semester.

Ok, for some reason, I can't Quote, but anyway- I LOVE Down in a Hole- no wonder you got goosebumps! How is the singer? I'm so glad you had a good time, you'd been looking forward to it for so long (probably since last year, right? lol) Glad to see you back- I've seen you lurking a tad this morning (at least it was morning here, now it's noon).

He liked it, he liked it! I'm so excited! He said if it didn't end the way he wanted it, he would never buy another King again Now I'm on him to read The Green Mile!

Yes, as I will state in my upcoming review, The Fountainhead has a ton more philosophy in it than Atlas Shrugged. But it's moving along- I'm at 60% now, 10% in one day. It moves, just not a page turner. Plus, it is a lot different than the last book and books I've been reading so it's a change in genres. I mainly read it and surf the net at the same time

Is this why JK Rowling went with Barnes and Noble (Nook) not Amazon (Kindle)?

THAT is so exciting! And a fixer- upper is great because you can do what you will with it Happy home memories.

This is on my TBR list, I hope I get to it in the next couple of months. I need to hold off a bit on dystopian books for awhile. Glad to hear it is good! And hello from California! -
I like the horizontal, as it makes me feel more like I'm reading a book! But it seems to take for- ever! I mean, seriously- 12 days for a 750 page book? I will probably only do 3 books this month.

I really want to see this. I like Will Forte from Saturday Night Live, although, once they leave the show, they rarely have careers. I've heard Bruce Dern was awesome in it though.
