  1. I loved some of her work about 10 years ago; especially Life Before Man and Cat's Eye were excellent. Then I didn't get on with The Handmaiden's Tale, and the The Blind Assassin was just... okay. I haven't any her work since then, but I've a handful of paperbacks, so I'm trying to get back to her writing again. As you say, her canon is HUGE!!
  2. Started reading The Travelling Hornplayer by Barbara Trapido today. Only read a handful of pages, but it is good so far. First book of her work for me.
  3. Ooooh, I noticed this book quite recently, and I thought I might have a look at it . It's winging it's way from the library to me now . Glad you enjoyed it pontalba. I always loved Napolean Solo
  4. The Road - the best realistic post-apocalyptic film I've seen, very grim but excellent film.
  5. For the read-a-thon, I'll start chipping away at a couple in my TBR mound; either Margaret Atwood's Lady Oracle or Barbara Trapido's The Travelling Hornplayer (just picked up the first two at random).
  6. Wheeeeeeeeeee! .... ........but still a year to go....... .... ... ....
  7. I plan to be in the Dec read-a-thon this coming weekend. I will be 'in training' tomorrow and Wednesday (as on both days we are having triple glazing fitted *groan*). So I will have time on my hand to do some serious reading then, and during the weekend too.
  8. Well, my attempts to chip away at my TBR's have been just abysmal this year, so far . I think I have to seriously think about not buying any books AT ALL in 2015..... .... . In fact, I should start on this quest today!
  9. 1. Persuasion 2. Pride and Prejudice 3. Emma
  10. Yeah, most of the books made me go ...."huh?" Like Athena said, The Shock of the Fall was excellent, and The Love Song Of Miss Queenie Hennessy by Rachel Joyce and The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton is on my local library's waiting lists at the moment. Plus a handful of other books on my TBR list.
  11. Nice to see that you enjoy The Humans . (That's a great Matt Haig quote too .)
  12. This one made my giggle too . You seemed to have a very good time at the bookseller and library .
  13. Mmmmm, that is a nice synopsis ! Drat, my local library doesn't have a copy of the book, so it's now on my Kindle wishlist too
  14. I'm so excited!!!!Yes, it's like being 12 years old in 1977 again.....(sigh)
  15. That's good news! I'm loving the first one, and bought the second e book soon after started the first. Flavia is a wonderful character, though she is a little too enthusiastic with the idea of trying poisons on anyone who annoys her... .
  16. Reading 64% of The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. Great stuff!
  17. Good to see you again KM, and those are great book acquisitions (lovely word too ) especially Alan Bennett's Smut.
  18. I'm looking forward to read The Rosie Project. I'm still kicking myself, as I didn't go to see the Graeme Simsion in my local bookshop event in Feb, but for some weird reason I had this idea in my head that it wouldn't been a good book . I agree with you, Enzo has some very good ideas in philosophy in life, and I keep wonder if
  19. I'm glad that you loved The Rosie Project , and It's top of the list to read TRP when I finish The Art of Racing in the Rain (and that is a wonderful book !)
  20. It's really good isn't it! I love it too! A very philosophical dog.... , and I'm half way through the book now. Bought two ebooks today - Do No Harm:Stories of Life, Death and Brain Surgery by Henry Marsh - I heard him on BBC Radio 4's Start the Week recently, so I hope the book is good . Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
