  1. Yeah, I was interested in that one, but forgot to listen to it on Radio 4's Book of the Week. I'm now in a queue of 3 from the library. .
  2. Sounds like a good read . I've only read one of Picoult's books so far (House Rules) and that was very good. She always seems to pick difficult subjects, but does them really well.
  3. Good review Weave , and it's on my library wishlist now.
  4. Yes, I noticed that one in my local bookshop yesterday, it was in their recommending section.....but not in the local library catalogue - rats! Best price for me is £4.99 at kobo.....that's sort of do-able. Preview downloaded so far .
  5. I'm pleased that you like this one - I've read less than a third so far. Fine's style takes me a lot of effort to concentrate on it, but as you said,"witty, wry and sarcastic" (and excellently done). She has a very good attitude to feminism (IMO), and to society's gender "norms" . The first chapter is indeed very detailed, isn't it? It made me quake, but I must go back to it again now. Your review was excellent too .
  6. That's a wonderful book!. Hope you enjoy it too I loved that one too. Really strange, but very realistic at the same time
  7. I hope that you enjoy the Jeeves and Wooster books *fingers crossed too* . They are great for cheering me up on a cold, wet day, and there are so many of them, that if you love them, there’s plenty more of them. The BCF is a small(ish) and very friendly community, and there are a lot of people here who love to read, and to talk about them as well. You might find that it’s quite addicting to read and post at the Forums too. (I’ve only been at the BCF since autumn 2013, and I’m so glad I joined ). Wow, no TV ! But at least there is the Net for you, and reading I suppose. I think that you are not alone when you have a good stock of books to keep you company. And then you can discuss them with like-minded people here after . Let us know that you feel about P.G. Wodehouse *fingers crossed again*
  8. That is falling of the wagon with great style!!
  9. . Sorry to hear that Julie .
  10. Hi JedCohelo, and welcome to the BCF forums . Any of the Jeeves and Wooster books are all great, and they have some good omnibus's (usually 3 books in each omnibus) are well worth it. Summer Lightening in the Blandings Castle series is a real hoot .
  11. Yeah, go Lizzie . Too scary at the last tun though!! Go Lizzie indeed !! But her last run made me cringe, it's was so near a catastrophe .
  12. Great review frankie, the quotes had me in fits of laughter! How weird people can be - I loved the one where the woman dropping of her two kids as if the bookshop was a creche . The Finnish alliteration was wonderful (Oh yeah, Tim Burton's very short poems are as weird (even more so) as his films )
  13. Sorry to hear that your Dad passed away KM.
  14. Little Pixie, I hope that you don't have any flood damage. *fingers crossed*
  15. The ski jumping was good yesterday, and I watched some of the luge too. I like watch the alpine downhill skiing, but I think I missed that last night, so iplayer here I come.

  17. Well, off the top of my head I can't think of anyone who are spectacles wearers in films or TV these days - they are only seem to be nerds/losers/unbalanced but very intelligent. It's always the same, I'm afraid, I think that wearing specs (especially if you are female). I wear specs all the time (very short sighted, since my early teens) and it's hardly ever been "cool" to wear them. Men yes, but not women. You might have worked it out that it bugs me, and that it's always been really annoying that females are hardly ever been fashionable to wear them. Thinking back to the good old days of black and white films, for me the best spectacle wearer was Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. He was perfect!!
  18. Hi Peacefield . Glad to hear your reading mojo is working well again, as it's really miserable when it's in the doldrums. Yes, The Goldfinch was one of the best novels I've read for a long while, and the first I've read by Donna Tartt, so I'm looking forward to reading more of her work. In The Goldfinch, I was having difficulty with Theo's character - by the time the Vegas days, I wanted to yell at him "Theo! Don't go down that path of life!". But there were so many layers of the plot, and peoples characters and their choices (or lack of them) in life. It was brilliant .
  19. A Giant Raft in the Philippines by It's Immaterial
  20. (though the briefcase of money would help my book buying a bit )
  21. Friday - 2 hours Saturday - 4 hours (managed to finish 200 pages of The Goldfinch, and dipped into Bill Bryson's Troublesome Words) Today - i hope to read Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse by Chris Riddell - a children's fantasy book, with wonderful illustrations .
  22. Finished reading The Goldfinch last night . Phew, reading that book was an experience, I felt a bit drained by the end of it. I was exasperated sometimes; it seemed to be going on forever, but it was very, very good. Highly recommended! But I think that this could be a marmite book - you love it or you hate it.
  23. Great find you got there, they are absolute classics . Congratulations on your win !
