  1. Managed to get 10 yesterday, now I'm up to 15 - most of those extra five were guesstimates though .
  2. Slave to the Rhythm - Grace Jones
  3. Yeah, I thought I would give Unlimited for the first free 30 days, and it does seem to have a better choice of books now. I've now got 30+ books on my wishlist (just by browsing through the Unlimited lists), so I'll give it a go for a few months anyway. I think that it will be well worth it, especially if anybody who is a voracious reader.
  4. To Be a Cat was my first book from Matt Haig, and although it was a children's book (for 9+ year olds), it was a good book. I'm halfway through The Humans, and I am completely hooked! There are so many cracking, pithy quotes from him too .
  5. Good review Alexi , and I'm now intrigued by the book, whereas I would't probably looked at this book before (as being a YA genre).
  6. Finished Matt Haig's To Be a Cat, and it was a good read too . So it's Haig's book The Humans to read next, plus Grayson Perry's Playing to the Gallery as a non-fiction read.
  7. Container Drivers - The Fall Release the Bats - The Birthday Party
  8. You know it's nearing the festive season when the double issue of the Radio Times thumps on the door mat this morning!! Woo hoo - a Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife specials on Christmas Day .
  9. p143 out of 244 of Barbara Trapido's The Travelling Hornplayer. Enjoying this book, but is a very bitter-sweet tragicomedy, and I still have her book Juggling on my TBR.
  10. Congratulations!!!! Great news for your Spring semester too
  11. I'll definitely try The Shell Collector (I'm trying kindle unlimited now, so TSC is on my wishlist, as 23 other books.. and 8 on my kindle fire already.... .... ) i hope that you enjoy TSC, as it's only a few days now .
  12. Tíbrá by Samaris and Spend, Spend, Spend by The Slits (Thanks to Don Letts' Crucial Vinyl on BBC 6 Music on Sunday night - I really should remember to listen this more often!)
  13. Glad that you enjoyed this one, I loved it too . Hadn't laughed and snorted so much while reading a book for a long time, and heartedly agreed with most of the answers she had to these musings.
  14. I liked Glitch, and I'll try Half Way Home next. The Shell Collector looks too. Cheeky! .... ..... Blimey, seems that Howey has written a lot of books in a short time!
  15. I've been trying to decide which one of Hugh Howey's novels to dip into, but I'll have a go with one of his short stories (probably Glitch) to see if I like his style.
  16. I have to admit that I tried to read A Farewell to Arms this year, but I have to admit that I didn't go very far with it (less than 1/3 the way). Hemingway's style is very pared down, and I just couldn't engage with the characters either. I hope you enjoy Humans and The Radleys, The Humans is on my TBR list.
  17. Thanks. To Be a Cat is good so far, and I'm looking forward to reading The Little Prince today . To Be a Cat is good, though I've only read two chapters so far. The book illustrations are beautiful, and I am such a sucker for children's book ink-illustrations. The Little Prince is a wonderful, magical book, isn't it? I love it! I only read it for the first time about five years ago, and I wonder what I would have thought of the book, if I had read when I was a child. There are so many different layers of significance and meanings of the book, for a child or an adult.
  18. For me, Attwood's writing style is not often easy and light work . As I started Lady Oracle yesterday, I'm straight away dumped in the plot and characters, without any hints of what is going on. Lots of lateral thinking needed .
  19. I will start on Matt Haig's To Be a Cat today. I'm in the mood for children's fiction at the moment, so I might re-read Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince at some time during the weekend too.
  20. Slice of cold turkey, carrot and parsnip mash, peas and skirlie with gravy. Sort of a mini Xmas lunch really , as we will have something different on Christmas Day. Do you always have a vegan diet? Did you choose a vegan diet for ethical reasons....or for dairy-products allergy/intolerance etc. sort of reasons?
  21. Homosapien - Pete Shelley
  22. Finished The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley yesterday. Looking forward to the other Flavia De Luce novels too
  23. The Railway Man
  24. I loved some of her work about 10 years ago; especially Life Before Man and Cat's Eye were excellent. Then I didn't get on with The Handmaiden's Tale, and the The Blind Assassin was just... okay. I haven't any her work since then, but I've a handful of paperbacks, so I'm trying to get back to her writing again. As you say, her canon is HUGE!!
  25. Started reading The Travelling Hornplayer by Barbara Trapido today. Only read a handful of pages, but it is good so far. First book of her work for me.
