How many of you buy more than you read?
Athena replied to Michelle's topic in General Book Discussions
I am guilty of this too. I buy more books than I read. I enjoy buying books immensely. To me a part of the fun of reading a book (or any other medium, really, but books especially) is looking forward to eventually getting to read it. I rarely buy something and read it straight away. I prefer to spend a bit of time looking at it, thinking about it, before I read it. I don't know if that makes sense, but I get a lot of enjoyment out of "looking forward to". It's good to know I'm not the only one who buys more books than she reads (he if you're a man)! -
Wow, such a long list! I look forward to read what you think of the books you'll read.
-
Thanks that's very kind of you. I hope you enjoy your reading too.

The Mystery of Mercy Close by Marian Keyes
Athena replied to corina's topic in Women's Fiction / Chick Lit
I had no idea she was battling with depression. I own one other book by Marian Keyes (Anybody Out There?), though I haven't read it yet. I've put The Mystery of Mercy Close on my wishlist, it says the paperback will be out in April. Is it a good book to start with, or would it be better to start with another book by her? -
Books You're Looking Forward To In 2013
Athena replied to chesilbeach's topic in General Book Discussions
Some of these are already released in hardcover, but I'm waiting for the paperback release. Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson - Wheel of Time #14: A Memory of Light Peter V. Brett - Demon Cycle #3: The Daylight War Sophie Kinsella - I've Got Your Number Peter F. Hamilton - Great North Road Penny Vincenzi - Love in the Afternoon and Other Delights The next Terry Pratchett book. As well as any other books by authors I like. There's probably more but I can't remember them at the moment. -
TBR Books You Have Been Putting Off Reading
Athena replied to Kylie's topic in General Book Discussions
Hmm well I have a lot of books that I've been putting off, but the main one would be: Leo Tolstoy - War and Peace And also: Joe Haldeman - Peace and War Other than that, most of my classics I've been putting off, for one because they are somewhat intimidating (don't read as easily as some ie. contemporary fiction I've got) and also because they're currently hidden behind other books on my book shelves. Other books I've been putting off are certain fantasy and science-fiction books, for example the ones where I own an omnibus or hardcover version. Those are too heavy to take with me when I travel so I've been putting off reading them. I generally buy paperbacks, the reason I've got these books in hardback is because they were really cheap. The omnibuses are paperback but they are big and heavy, sometimes I didn't have a choice and had to get the omnibus instead of the individual books and other times it just worked out to be a lot cheaper. Examples: Christopher Paolini - Inheritance series (only read Eragon so far) Terry Brooks - Shannara series Dan Simmons - Hyperion Omnibus & Endymion Omnibus (re-read for Hyperion) Peter F. Hamilton - Pandora's Star (and consequently also Judas Unchained but that's a paperback) The Complete Novels of Jane Austen (this one's a classic and a big book) Furthermore, there's the books I have in Dutch but that are originally written in English, mostly these are thrillers. I haven't read a thriller in ages, I'm not really into that genre much anymore. These days I also prefer the English original to the Dutch translated version, and don't buy any Dutch books anymore that are translations of English books. -
Great review! I have to admit it took me a while too before I really started to like the first book, the first part of it is a bit generic (as you said). The rest of the books (save from one or two) are much more interesting and I hope you'll stick with the series and discover all the good parts of it.

I'm really glad to hear that, sounds good! Sounds like I'll have to read it soon! I haven't really heard a lot about it, great to hear it's a good read. Thanks! I haven't read it yet (shame on me, it's been on my shelf for a while now), I didn't want to read too many fantasy series at once. But I'm thinking maybe this year I'll read all three of them, great to hear you love them! Ah I've got The Empire Trilogy, was planning to read Magician first though. Glad to hear you like those books, sounds like I'll have to read them soon .

I've had the Mexican flu these past two weeks, it's nearly over now. It's been a tough few days, only slowly improving. My whole family, except those who got the flu vaccin, got ill. So in their case I think it worked. I'm glad the illness is nearly over for us all now. @ Mbwun_Lily I'm sorry for your loss . @ Chesil Happy Anniversary!

Well it's situated in Paris but most people speak English with a British accent. It's kind of weird at first, text in the film (ie. a book) is all in French yet the characters speak English, but once you get over that it's quite a good film. The music is French-ish, though I don't know if any French people helped make the film (the film is based on some real characters btw, I mean people who actually lived in the 1930's).

Wow.. I'm not sure what to say , poor you.

Continuation from previous post.. (note: next year make more posts at the start, with room for wishlist etc.) (open spoiler tags for the list) 21-12-2013 Ok, all done I think . I'm currently reading: Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson - Wheel of Time #13: Towers of Midnight Hopefully I should remember to post in this topic once I finish a book!
-
Note: The post is getting too long, so soon will have to split it up in combination with the post below or something. Next year I'll make more posts at the beginning of a topic! I'm editing this post to include a list of all my books (excluding nearly all children's and some teenager's books!!): (note: these are in the order I put them in the database. I started this new database in February, so after that it's sorted based on purchase date as I added them (except for a few that I forgot to add earlier on). (note 2: Most books are paperback, a few are hardcover, and some are Kindle books (free or purchased), a very few are ebooks purchased (from HumbleBundle). Some books are Dutch (either originally Dutch or translated into Dutch), most books are in English.) (note 3: I haven't read some of my books. I haven't read a lot of my adult books , I have read most of my children's and teenager's books. I have to put them in my database sometime, but most are in Dutch so it takes a bit more time to add them sometimes. Also a lot are in boxes so that doesn't make it easy .) (note 4: The empty entries are actually Dutch puzzle books but I couldn't be bothered to fill in all their information so so far only their ISBN is in the database and the author and title fields are empty) (open the spoiler tags for the list) Children's and teen's books I'm working on, they've been scanned but some information isn't correct so I'll have to edit it. It's about 250 books I think atm, I have quite a few still in boxes upstairs. 23-08-2013

Books I plan to read this year: Mostly books that I own that I haven't read yet (too many to type), as well as any future books I'll buy. I'll probably also read some manga from my boyfriend. I'll write down a couple that I definately plan / hope to read: Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson - Wheel of Time #14: A Memory of Light (once the paperback is out) Robert Jordan - Wheel of Time #0: New Spring Peter V. Brett - Demon Cycle #3: The Daylight War Stephen King - It (reread) Leo Tolstoy - War and Peace (will see if I actually read it this year XD, been planning to read it for a while) Joe Haldeman - Peace and War (omnibus) Suzanne Collins - Hunger Games #2: Catching Fire Suzanne Collins - Hunger Games #3: Mockingjay And more in general, I plan to also read one or more books by: Fantasy Terry Pratchett Robin Hobb Brandon Sanderson Terry Brooks David Eddings Raymond E. Feist Brent Weeks Trudi Canavan Stephen Donaldson Terry Goodkind Karen Miller / K. E. Mills Science-fiction: Peter F. Hamilton Alastair Reynolds Dan Simmons Neal Asher Stephen Baxter Iain M. Banks Fiction (contemporary, historical, chicklit): Sophie Kinsella Diane Chamberlain Penny Vincenzi Erica James Jodi Picoult Nicholas Sparks Literature: Charles Dickens More literature in general, I've got quite a few but they're hidden behind other books on my book shelves. I also plan to read some young-adult books and maybe some detectives too. There are probably books that I haven't typed now that I'll read, but I didn't want to type out all the books I own that I haven't read yet or that I plan to re-read. If you're curious though I'd be happy to copy paste a list from my database (or you can check me on GoodReads), not sure if it'd fit into one post or not.

I've never kept a reading list like some of the other topics here, but I thought I'd give it a go! I've only been recording what I read when, since last June on GoodReads. I read about 43 books from June until the end of the year, so I think I should be able to read 50-75 books in one year. Of course it also depends on how many pages etc and what else I'm doing. Tim's Horror, Fantasy and Sci-Fi Reads from 2012
Athena replied to Timstar's topic in Past Book Logs
There are quite a few titles mentioned here that I've heard of, I'll have to go through your entire thread and see what gems I can find ! Added The Stand to my wishlist, since several of you say it's a good book. I've read a few Stephen King books and liked them, so I might like this one too. I love The Painted Man and The Desert Spear was good too. I'm looking forward to read The Daylight War when it's out. I hope you enjoy The Desert Spear when you read it. -
I just drank some orange juice (no bits), which is what I usually drink. I do like a bit of a variety of drinks but orange juice is by far my favourite and hence I usually drink it. I don't like anything with bubbles.

I saw Hugo yesterday, that was pretty interesting. It's about a young boy in the 1930's (looked it up since I didn't know the exact year). The boy is an orphan and he tends to the clocks on a train station in Paris (he also lives on this station). He steals to get food. I don't want to spoil too much. It was quite nice. I didn't know much about the film before I started watching it, my boyfriend saw it was on TV (on the film channel) and said it sounded interesting. Apparently it's based on a book, will have to look into that. I liked Mamma Mia!, it's not a brilliant film imo but it's good. I like The Descendants too, it's a great film although I prefer the book (but that's the case most of the time).
-
Hmm, there are quite a few films I'm looking forward to see. It should be pointed out that on occasion films release earlier here than in the UK, but usually they release later (and often quite a bit later than the US). I'll probably go to the cinema to see a few films, for others I'll wait until the Blu-ray is out and buy that (either straight away or eventually). Planned to see in 2012 but not seen yet (we got ill in the winter holidays): - Wreck-It-Ralph - The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Anna Karenina Want to see: - Star Trek: Into Darkness - The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - Man of Steel - Iron Man 3 - Safe Haven - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Despicable Me 2 - The Great Gatsby - Monsters University - Ender's Game I also want to see The Lucky One and will likely get it on Blu-ray sometime. There's probably more but I can't think of them right now. I don't generally keep track of what's out when, sometimes I don't know until it's out and I randomly decide to browse the cinema site to see if there's anything interesting I might want to see.

I'm not so good with Imperial units, but here they say it'll start freezing soon here (below 0 C). We've had nice (for this time of year) weather the past two weeks, I'm not really looking forward to it getting colder again. Before these two weeks, there was lots of snow and it was quite cold. I don't mind snow when I can stay inside, but I have to go outside to get to university etc.
-
I'm really liking it here so far! Thanks for the welcome, everyone .

So far I've read (in January 2013): Novels: Sinéad Moriarty - The Baby Trail (re-read) Sinéad Moriarty - A Perfect Match (re-read) Sinéad Moriarty - From Here to Maternity (re-read) Manga: Keiko Tobe - With the Light 8: Raising an Autistic Child Nagaru Tanigawa - The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan Vol. 1 Nagaru Tanigawa - The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan Vol. 2 I'm currently reading: Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson - Wheel of Time 13: Towers of Midnight (so far it's pretty good).

Unfortunately I didn't start recording what books I read when until May 2012. This list is therefore only contains books I read from May on, because I don't remember which ones I read between January and May and which ones I read in 2011 etc. Your favourite read of the year? It's impossible to pick one book over all others. I read 43 books from May to December 2012, of which quite a few I rate 5 stars. If I had to pick a few: Robert Jordan & Brandon Sanderson - Wheel of Time 12: The Gathering Storm Blake Charlton - Spellwright Yahtzee Croshaw - Jam Melissa Hill - The Charm Bracelet Erica James - Promises, Promises Sophie Kinsella - Mini Shopaholic Penny Vincenzi - Another Woman Your favourite author of the year? I don't know, there are too many good ones. Your most read author of the year? Karen Miller, 4 books. Your favourite book cover of the year? I don't know, many of the books I read have pretty covers. The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, the one you read least of)? I didn't abandon any books. The book that most disappointed you? None of them really disappointed me, though I'd have to say H. G. Wells - The Time Machine disappointed me the most if I had to pick any. But only because it was different from the film The Time Machine. The funniest book of the year?. Terry Pratchett - Discworld 22: The Last Continent. Your favourite literary character this year? I only read one literary book this year. I didn't find the characters in The Time Machine (see above) that appealing. If it can be any character from any novel then I really wouldn't know. Your favourite children's book this year? I didn't read any children's book this year. Your favourite classic of the year? The only classic I read was H. G. Wells - The Time Machine. Your favourite non-fiction book this year? I didn't read any non-fiction books this year (other than for my studies, but those books I read to look something up, I don't read all of their text). Your favourite biography this year? Nina Sankovitch - Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: My Year of Magical Reading was the only biography I read this year (I don't normally read them to be honest), and I liked it a lot. Your favourite collection of short stories this year? I didn't read any this year. Your favourite poetry collection this year? I don't read much poetry. Your favourite illustrated book of the year? I don't read many illustrated books. Your favourite publisher of the year? I never really take note of what publisher's published which book. I mean, yes I look at the little icon on the book, but I don't have a favourite publisher or anything. It'd have to be one that publishes all books in a series in the same way, as opposed to some who keep making different style covers, sizes of books etc. Your favourite audiobook of the year? I never listen to audio books. Your favourite re-read of the year? The only book I re-read was Frank Herbert - Dune, so it'd have to be that one (I rate it 4 stars).

We've got two dogs, two goats and 34 chicken (recently gotten some new ones). I may post some pictures later, I'm currently on my laptop which doesn't have any photos on it. Our dogs are Pamuk (a she) and Boris (a he). Pamuk is a few years old and came from Turkey, where as a puppy she was thrown out as garbage. She has had a troubled puppyhood but landed on her four feet in our house and has a lot of fun here. She's half Akbash half Labrador. Boris is now 8 months old and is a Komondor. He's very big and is still growing. The two of them like to play together and dig holes etc. We have two goats, we used to have three but one of them passed away. They are called William and Lise. We have 5 cockrels and 29 hens (not all in the same area). They are of various breeds, some of them are "zijdehoenders" (I don't know what this breed is called in English), some of them are white chicken who are bred for being in a massive chicken farm, some of them are black and white (I don't recall the name atm). (I live with my parents, we live in a farm so we have some space for these animals)
