Charm
Yes Nicola, that's the first. It goes: Darkly Dreaming Dexter Dearly Devoted Dexter Dexter in the Dark Dexter by Design Although the series is based on the books, the books are much much better, be prepared for a few changes! Enjoy!
Ceinwenn
Although the series is based on the books, the books are much much better, be prepared for a few changes! Enjoy! ** Not to be pedantic but only the 1st series is based on one of the books, the 1st book. The rest of the series are unrelated to the books, except for the main characters, that is. Or, at least that's what I've read, cause I've never seen the series on telly. <--Me to Charm

Therefore, the whole Dexter series would have its roots as being based on the first book and so we can safely say that all the series' are based on the book! frankie
I have to say now that I've reread the Darkly Dreaming Dexter that there are a couple of major differences between the book and the TV-series season 1. First of all: Dexter's sister isn't dating the ice truck killer and in the end she finds out about Dexter's secret (that last part blew me away while I was rereading, I hadn't remembered that part!) . Second of all, the ice truck killer gets away. Thirdly: LaGuerta dies . Edited May 20, 2009 by frankie
Ghost
I have only read Dearly Devoted Dexter and only ever seen a few episodes of it on TV but I did enjoy it, I plan on buying Dexter in the Dark soon I have read about it on Wiki and it seems interesting. I know! I saw the series before I read the book and kept waiting to read of her meeting him and dating him, so glad she didn't. Didn't you remember her knowing in the second book either then? Ya silly billy Second of all, the ice truck killer gets away. Is the ice truck killer not his brother? Did he not die in the end? I have only read Dearly Devoted Dexter and only ever seen a few episodes of it on TV but I did enjoy it, I plan on buying Dexter in the Dark soon I have read about it on Wiki and it seems interesting. Another Dexter fan! Glad you enjoyed him Ghost. You should read Darkly Dreaming Dexter too, the first in the series. It explains a lot

Didn't you remember her knowing in the second book either then? Ya silly billy I have no idea, I can't remember whether I remembered or not I think you are beginning to see why I seriously needed to reread this two books Is the ice truck killer not his brother? Did he not die in the end? Yes, the ice truck killer is his brother but I'm under the impression that he did not die. **** now I have to check. Edit: I checked, it says here that his brother is wanted by the police so sooner or later he'd be found unless he finds the people who are looking for him first. Because Dexter had been given a lesson on how important families are, Dexter hopes he doesn't get caught. It's so confusing to read Dexter because I'm far more familiar with the TV-series, I've watched seasons 1+2 twice I think. Charm
...ah ... you gave me a wee chuckle ... Now I can't remember if he died or not, I think he did but I'm probably wrong. Either way, I don't think he got a way? Maybe I should re-read it! Edit: Em ... ok .... I'll say it, I was wrong.

frankie
So I read Darkly Dreaming Dexter in Finnish and moved on to Dearly Devoted Dexter which I've bought for myself in English. So it's the first time I'm reading Dexter in English and now I definitely understand why Ceinwenn named the thread like that. All starting with D's. I mean I did know from the Finnish books that Lindsay likes to play with alliteration in his Dexter novels, but I had never realised how much he used the letter D (which of course makes sense now because 'Dexter' starts with a D). 'D' is very rare in Finnish. If I think about it, I'd say that it's only used in inflectional endings (and those too can be avoided by using 'tt' instead.) and if we've borrowed a foreign word like 'detail'. (This was a very quick and rough estimate of Finnish so it doesn't hold to court). Those kinds of borrowed words are most likely seen/heard in a very official texts, we have our own word for that and of course that's more used. I was just thinking that I hadn't run into the D thing in the Finnish translation because there aren't that many words to start with D. The first I could think of is 'daami Dexter' ('dame Dexter') and it certainly doesn't sound right, aye?

The first I could think of is 'daami Dexter' ('dame Dexter') and it certainly doesn't sound right, aye? Haaa!! Dame Dexter.....doesn't sound like a serial killer to me!! I read the first four chapters of Darkly Dreaming Dexter and I'm really enjoying it!
frankie
Haaa!! Dame Dexter.....doesn't sound like a serial killer to me!! I think you're right. Dexter is unique already the way he is, transsexualism might be a bit too much. Maybe that could be included in some other series. Do you think I should give Mr Lindsay a call about it? I didn't realise that you didn't realise about all the D's, you see it makes perfect sense then? Definitely!! haa!! It would provide a shocking twist I dare say!! Wash your mouth out young lady! That will never happen! Today (while I was supposed to be working) I snuck in a few more chapters of Dexter at my desk. I really can't put it down!! I couldn't blame you, it's been taking me ages to finish Dearly Devoted Dexter. It's not that I'm not enjoying it, it's just that I'm finally realizing that summer is actually here and I've been socialising quite a lot lately. Did you start it? I'm going to make a real effort to finish Devoted Dexter today so I can join you! Ceinwenn, Nicola, where are you at with your readings? As far as I'm concerned it's on with 3rd Dex , unless somebody wants to wait?
