It is 1963, the Beatles are becoming wildly popular in England, and the Swinging Sixties are about to change the post-war Western world. But in the village of Scardale in the Peaks District of Derbyshire, a desolate area beloved of hikers and climbers, nothing has changed for hundreds of years. The village has remained small and insular--most villagers are related, and the most common second names are Carter and Lomas. When Alison Carter, aged 13, disappears while walking her dog, the case is given to a young detective inspector named George Bennett. As Bennett gets to know the families in the village and their concerns, he realizes that this case is not as simple as it first seems. The villagers seem to be closing ranks, and Bennett suspects they may be protecting one of their own. Central to his investigation are Alison's mother and her husband. When Ruth Carter remarried, she chose Philip Hawkin, an outsider who is now the current squire of the village. As Alison's stepfather, he raises all kinds of red flags for Bennett. But so does Alison's close relationship with her cousin Charlie who, too conveniently, it seems, finds a vital clue.

All this is complicated by the fact that the police and the villagers cannot find Alison's body; there are also other disappearances in the area which may or may not be connected. To reveal more about this riveting mystery would be to give too much away. McDermid takes the reader through a maze of conflicting facts and theories, and when Bennett, with the help of local police, solves the case, the real story is only just beginning--especially for Bennett, who will question not only his own part in solving this case, but ultimately the profession he has chosen

 

My thoughts

 

Unfortunately this book was quite disappointing and boring. I've read some other books of the author which I really liked and this one just couldn't hold up. I waited almost the whole book for the turn in the story, which you can sense will come and it takes ages to do so.

Stunningly handsome, clever and not a little bit intimidating, there's something about him that doesn't quite add up. Ever realises he's hiding something, but nothing could prepare her for the truth - especially when the truth involves past lives, murderous enemies, everlasting love and the secret of eternal youth.

My thoughts

 

Definately not a challenging book but quite entertaining and a light and easy read for the inbetween. It's a cute story, with similarities to the twighlight series but surely not as good. I find the writing a bit jumpy, as if her writing isn't fully developed.

Nonetheless I'm going to read the other books of the series (because I wanna know how it goes on and the covers are very pretty )but I won't be waiting unpatiently for the next books to be published.

The trouble with being a vampire is...You can't get a decent haircut. You live on guinea-pig blood. And even worse, most of the world's population wants to kill you for no good reason. Nina Harrison became a vampire in 1973, when she was fifteen. Since then, life's been one big drag - mostly because she spends all her time with a bunch of vampires, in a vampire therapy group. Then one of them gets staked by an anonymous vampire slayer, and things become even worse: while tracking down the culprit, Nina and her fellow vampires end up in the middle of an illegal werewolf-fighting racket, and find themselves the target of some genuine villains who'll stop at nothing to get their werewolf back.

 

My thoughts

 

I finished this book yesterday and I really enjoyed it, I simply flew through it. It' s a different take on all the vampire books that are out there at the moment, which is quite refreshing.

Shutter Island is something of a departure for Dennis Lehane. It is not like the private eye novels with which he made his name and it is not especially like Mystic River, his distinguished crime novel about murder, loyalty and revenge. Instead, he gives us a classic of psychological suspense--US Marshal Teddy is summoned to a remote hospital for the criminally insane to look for a missing patient and finds his own future and sanity on the line. It is the 1950s and experiments with drugs, conditioning and brain surgery are all the rage both in the psychiatric profession and in the shadow world of government agencies. Teddy rapidly becomes aware that no-one he is talking to is remotely telling him the truth and that he cannot be wholly sure even of his charming new partner. As the island hospital is isolated by a hurricane, we find ourselves unable to trust a single thing that the narrative tells us--Lehane displays a gift for sleight of hand which is showily disorienting. At the same time, this is not just a box of tricks. We find ourselves caring deeply for Teddy and his partner Chuck, whatever is going on and whoever they really are.

 

My thoughts

 

I kinda thought that the book would be more suspensful. It got a little bit boring, until near the end, where the turn kicks in. I would have liked to read more after the turn

(when Chuck's gone and the mind game starts. What's the truth now? Is Teddy really a patient or are they playing with him, to secure their hidden experiments?)

, cause that was the time the book got interesting.

Or did I get it all wrong and Teddy actually was a patient the whole time and they actually made all the fuss to try to get him out of denial?

Little bit confusing here, which way is it now?

Kate dispatches the demon handily enough, but she learns that Goramesh, one of the terrible High Demons, has come to town looking for something. Where's he hiding and what does he want? Though Kenner starts off her story by dropping so many brand names the book reads like a how-to manual for product placement, she settles down to the action soon enough, and readers will find spunky Kate hard not to root for in spheres both domestic and demonic.

 

My thoughts

 

I really liked it! It's a real fun book and easy to read, so I just flew through the pages. What got me to buy it, was the comparison to Buffy as an adult. And it fits. After reading this book, I emidiately bought the other 3 parts of the series.

I wonder how the daughter will react to her Moms secret, will she join in in the fight against demons? And what's the deal with the Maybe-Eric?

Interesting questions keep you wanting to read more.

Shutter Island is on my wish list and The Reformed Vampire Support Group seems really interesting

 

I wanted to read Shutter Island before I see the movie, now I'm kinda hoping that the movie's gonna be more thrilling. The book's still good though, just expected more suspense.

The reformed vampire support group is real nice, nothing challenging of course. But funny and something different to all the Vampire-Super-Lover-books that are out there right now.

I definately need to come up with a buy-books-per-month-limit, I just can't seem to stop...

I know this feeling. I am trying to limit myself to about 3 books per month, and I already have three for this month.

But, there are new authors I am interested in. I am trying so hard not to push that order button at amazon.

I'm buying the books way faster than I can read them, my TBR pile is growing like hell! This week I'm going to need to reorganize my shelves, cause there's not enough space left for all my books.
