Ben Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 I found it was a very slow book, tolken does have brilliant style that involves drawing the most detailed pictures , you really need to be able to read in in a very relaxed environment with no time constraints to be able to appreciate it properly I'm sure I'll manage that.
mister.g Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 The Haunted - Chuck Palahniuk. I know i'll like it - i just have so much else to read with established protagonists. I will read Chuck after i'm up to date with Harry Bosch I will read Chuck after i'm up to date with Harry Bosch I will read Chuck after i'm up to date with Harry Bosch.............
Colin Jacobs Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 The Duncton wood Trilogy I am waiting to get the first book from a 2nd hand shop I bought two and three last year.
anisia Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Catch-22. I've had this book on my TBR list for a few years. I've heard so much about it and it's been recommended to me a few times so I really need to actually get to it at some point soon!
Nollaig Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 I saw that in the shop today and debated picking it up. Decided against it. Its on my list too.
Echo Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I'm putting off practically everything on my TBR list. I find myself re-reading old favorites more than I read new books. I need to stop doing that. Wow, I just realized that I made it to 3.000 posts! I'm such a chatterbug!
bethany725 Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Wow, I just realized that I made it to 3.000 posts! I'm such a chatterbug! Woo hoo!! Congrats, Echo! And I like your chatterbugginess.
Kylie Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Woohoo! Congrats Echo I have a couple of series of books that I start to 'crave' if I haven't read them in a while. I'm craving one particular series now (10 books in all, although they're reasonably short) and I have to keep sternly reminding myself that I have a lot of other books that haven't had a first reading yet.
Ben Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Well done Echo! I still should getting around to picking The Hobbit up.
Guest Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke 800 page book, bought it a few years ago, still can't find the enthusiasm to read it yet.
Nollaig Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I have a feeling Salman Rushdie will be waiting a bit before I get to him.
frankie Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 For some weird reason the books that I seem to be putting off reading the most are the ones I'd like to read the most. I don't know if that makes any sense. I guess I have such high hopes for them that I don't want to just read them whenever, but only until my mood is right for them. For example Sylvia Plath's Bell Jar, Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair (which is actually a reread) plus his other Thursday Next novels, Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings (which is also on hold for it's massiveness)...

I put of reading A Boy of Good Breeding by Miriam Toews for ages. I loved A Complicated Kindness so much, that I was worried A Boy of Good Breeding would be a disappointment. In a way I was afraid to read it, in case it wasn't as good as I hoped it to be. (It was, I loved it!)
anisia Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 I saw that in the shop today and debated picking it up. Decided against it. Its on my list too. At least I'm not the only one... Wow, I just realized that I made it to 3.000 posts! I'm such a chatterbug! Congrats
Ahsilet Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte I got three pages in, but it wasn't catching my attention. I haven't had any desire to re-pick it up again. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova Just because I am enjoying the Twilight saga doesn't mean I am going to enjoy every vampire book I come across. This was recommended to me, but I have a feeling I am not going to like it, so I have been avoiding it, and grabbing other books around it on my book shelf. War & Peace and Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy I had picked up Anna Karenina, but put it down again. I still don't know why I can't bring myself to open this book. Plus, I have no time to read these books. Leo Tolstoy is someone to can't fly through like you can with other fun reads. The way he does characters in his books, you really need your full attention of his books.

Raven Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 I never seem to get around to reading The Name of the Rose, there always seems to be another book in front of it in the queue.
BookBee8 Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 The Hobbit - For some reason I just can't for the life of me get going in this book. I've attempted to read it several times and just haven't been able to do it. I might take it on holiday with me this year, then I'll have a better chance of reading it. I had the same problem. I figured I'd give it a shot even though it didn't appeal, but the style bored me. From my own TBR pile I've been putting off Nora Roberts, Sheila O'Flanagan and Torey Hayden. I've just not been in the mood.
Ben Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 I don't know what it is about The Hobbit, it's just it doesn't manage to grab my attention, and it's not even that bad!
crotalus_p Posted January 21, 2009 Author Posted January 21, 2009 I don't know what it is about The Hobbit, it's just it doesn't manage to grab my attention, and it's not even that bad! Just keep going you will eventually get to a point where you wont stop reading just to show the book who
princessponti Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 (edited) Wuthering Heights by Emily BronteI got three pages in, but it wasn't catching my attention. I haven't had any desire to re-pick it up again. One of my favourite books! Read it twice now :-) ...so I would say... persevere! I have a whole swathe of books by Stephen Fry that someone gave me; I really enjoyed the one that I have read, but for some reason I just can't seem to pick up the others, I think because I didn't pick them myself? Cloud Atlas is also one I can't pick up, I've been told its not very good but I really want to read it - the conflict of emotions has gotten in the way on this one! Edited January 31, 2009 by Nici Fixed the quote :)
Charm Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 The Historian because its a big book. It is a book i want to read thru. Oh I bought this today in a charity shop for 2 quid!

Colin Jacobs Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 War and Peace because I need to be in the right mood and have the right ambience to get stuck into it. It is hard to explain but anyone who reads books a lot will no doubt understand
Kylie Posted February 1, 2009 Posted February 1, 2009 Cloud Atlas is also one I can't pick up, I've been told its not very good but I really want to read it - the conflict of emotions has gotten in the way on this one! Freewheeling Andy loves Cloud Atlas. If in doubt, I'm sure he can nudge you towards reading it a little more. I liked it OK but was a little disappointed because I'd read so many good reviews about it beforehand. I liked some parts more than others, but I'd definitely recommend you read it.
