Gone With the Wind?

Another favourite, both book and film.

Which reminds me of Dr Zhivago. Preferred the film on this one.

I love Merchant Ivory's production of E.M. Forster's books Howard's End and A Room With a View.

And although not a film, the TV series of R.F. Delderfield's A Horseman Riding By, is also excellent.

I've re-read and re-watched all the books and films several times.

Yes, can only agree - both brilliant (as were the books);  I think I just about preferred HE to ARWAV, but it's a close  call!

BTW, please forgive my obsession with detail (nit-picking!), but there's no apostrophe in Howards End.  I have no idea why - completely counter-intuitive! (OH  tells me that I should let these things go, but I'm not very good at that - sorry!).

I'm with you re apostrophes Willoyd, can't stand them in the wrong place!

I've read both those Forster books, I preferred the film version of Howards End to the book though.

I forgot about Dr. Zhivago. A book and film that I really liked. Also liked the theme music.

Many apologies, Willoyd, I've just discovered that my tablet is automatically adding the apostrophe, but I think I would have added it myself, anyway 😄 It's good you pointed it out, as I will remember from now on.

Yes, Howards End is my favourite.

If all your predictive text is doing is adding apostrophes, then you're a lucky person! Mine causes carnage!

This has just given me an idea... :D

I hope I can still reply to this thread and that it is not too old.

I really like the first season of Games of Thrones, it matches rather faithfully the first book (A Song of Ice and Fire).

As many, I have watched the TV show first and, while reading the book, I could see the scenes of the show playing into my mind.

I won't vouch for the other seasons, though!

I think it stayed fairly close up to series 5, which lost it completely, though they did mix up storylines a bit, a the books don't follow on chronologically but you catch up with some characters in a following book.

Hello!

That sounds like a great idea, especially if you're a book lover. One of my favorite film adaptations of a book is "The Shawshank Redemption," based on Stephen King's novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption." It's a classic that's well-loved by many. Reading the novella first would add an extra layer of appreciation. Enjoy your films marathon! 📚🎬

This is an excellent idea for a thread, even after @nikolah has had his/her film evening (and would be interested to hear what films were watched!).

I'd third the Lord of the Rings films.  I loved the books (read them twice now), and enjoyed the films almost as much - they really were a good interpretation.

I'd also agree with @France about The Day of the Jackal - a really good, edge of the seat, rendering of one of the rare thrillers that completely grabbed me.

Other film adaptations I've particularly enjoyed have included the following.  I've only included those where I've read the book AND seen the film, and really enjoyed both.  I've not included any children's books/films.  They're not necessarily the closest interpretations, just those which I think reflect or compliment the book.

Sense and Sensibility (Ang Lee's version)

Emma (Autumn de Wilde's version)

A Month In The Country

A Very Long Engagement

The Hours

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (starring Gary Oldman)

Lawrence of Arabia (apparently based on The Seven Pillars of Wisdom - I wasn't aware of this either reading book or seeing film, but it's brilliant!).

Hidden Figures

All The President's Men

MASH

The Big Sleep

The Leopard

Apollo 13 (based on Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13)

Master and Commander (actually based on two other books in Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin sequence)

One of my favourite books is To Kill A Mockingbird.  I've never got around to seeing the film, but I've never known anybody who hasn't enjoyed it!

(I think I must be one of the only people on the planet who really hated Alone In Berlin - the book I mean as haven't seen the film!).

Am I too late for this thread? As a newbie am trawling the site to see what takes my fancy and notice you like the film Tinker Sailor Soldier Spy. I prefer the TV serial with Alex Guinness, much closer to the book, it has time to go into detail that a 2hour picture can't manage and Guinness is my idea of George Smiley.

Never too late.  I agree entirely, but did enjoy the film itself enormously.  I think what you say is true of a lot of adaptations: the TV does give more room for manouevre.  My favourite other TV adaptations must include the ubiquitous Firth/Ehle Pride and Prejudice and the BBC's Bleak House (Anna Maxwell Martin, Gillian Anderson, Charles Dance et al).
