Echo
Trump dominates the news, as is typical: ridiculous tariffs, paying off a woman with whom he had an affair, possibly meeting with Kim Jong Un (but probably not), promising to do something for gun control, then switching to blaming video games for violence, trying to cover up his collusion with the Russians, and just generally screwing everything up. In my state, Washington, our governor signed a net neutrality law, our attorney general is suing Trump's administration over about a million different things, the Seattle Seahawks released Richard Sherman (WHY???? ), and there was a huge meteor that exploded off the coast and shook all these coastal town and freaked everyone out. itsmeagain
We have had a lot about supermarkets withdrawing unsafe, egg containing food that should have no egg in it. A bunch of men still sought for a knife attack, or several, at a Sheffield night spot.
Echo
Today, the news was all about the thousands of students who walked out of their classes to protest gun violence in schools. Some schools tried to prevent them, but kids still walked out of their classrooms, even just to kneel silently in the hallways. It was so moving, and I'm so proud of them! Talisman
I think it's brilliant. I have been reading rumours that something like this was going to happen and am so glad to see that those rumours were true. This is the only way that change is going happen and if I were an American High School student I would have been right there with them. The news here at the moment is all about the Russian double agent who has been poisoned in a restaurant in the town of Salisbury. The Russians are denying that they have anything to do with it (as if they would admit it anyway) and our Government have been busy expelling half their diplomats. If you ask me it's just like silly little kids fighting in the playground.
Madeleine
It was great to see all those American students protesting about something this important, let's hope their generation can really make a change in the gun laws.

poppy
Barack Obama is visiting us at the moment. He is almost universally liked and admired in NZ, he's getting a very warm welcome everywhere. Got to wonder how different things would be if the present POTUS deigned to visit! Kylie
And now Obama is visiting us! We love him too...mind you, we also love NZ's current PM. I'd happily swap ours for yours any day, Poppy!

Virginia
And in other news, we've had ANOTHER freaking school shooting in Washington, DC. Oh, and a homegrown terrorist whose been targeting African Americans in Austin, Texas. After holding the state hostage by fear, he decided to do the world a favor by blowing himself up. Talking mouth pieces don't want to calm him what he was, a 24 year old white, homegrown American terrorist. Had he been any other color that's what he'd have been called. But they'll push the mental illness agenda because of his conservative, "Christian" homeschooled upbringing. Did I forget to mention that Dotard Drumpf has fired two of his staff in one day and now we have a warmonger as the head of national security Oh, and we have a dead head former neurosurgeon basically stole $31,000 for a damned dinner table for his OFFICE, when questioned about the price tag, this disgusting repugnant douche blamed it on his WIFE! But he forgot that there is email to link him to approving the purchase. I see him and I want to vomit almost as much as I want to vomit when I see that orange igit. I won't even go into the whole "sleeping with the porn star while married to his current wife, without protection and then having her threatened with violence if she doesn't keep quiet. Oh, and the call girl he had a 10 month affair while still married to his current wife. Can you tell I'm frustrated? LMBO!! Yes, please give Obama back to us! Tomorrow is the national March For Our Lives event, with dozens of marches across America against gun violence. I won't personally be marching (I don't have the physical stamina), but I'll be following the events as the day goes on. Love these kids! I'm thinking some Drumpf secrets will start to be leaked from credible witnesses out of Russia. When I heard about the self driving car that killed that poor woman in Arizona I thought what a shame it wasn't Trump! I am sure there are quite a few who thought the same thing. As for secrets being leaked from Russia I wouldn't be at all surprised - I am sure there are quite a few to tell and we don't know even the half of it, not that Putin is squeaky clean either, or for that matter our own politicians. Personally I am not sure who is worse - or more dangerous. The other thing that has come to light this week in the UK is the revelations that the Leave campaign for the Brexit referendum may have broken the spending rules. The young man who blew the whistle on all of this, who is of Pakistani origin, has been outed as gay in the most appalling manner by the man that is accused of being behind a lot of this, who also happens to be one of our Prime Ministers most trusted advisors. As a result members of this young mans family in Pakistan, a country where homosexuality is still illegal, have been placed in severe danger. Madeleine
That accident with the self-driving car is terribly tragic, although I think it was inevitable. Besides, what's the point of a self-driving car if you still need someone who can drive, to be able to take over if anything goes wrong - which failed woefully in this case. Talisman
Although I think Uber who owned the car have been cleared of any wrong doing. I don't know the exact details but just saw the headline. I agree though that having someone in there who can take over the controls kind of defeats the object. It's new technology though which will no doubt evolve. There's no way you would ever get me in one of those things though!
Athena
As far as I know, the technology of cars driving them-selves (sort of) is still very new, which is why, I think, it's recommended everywhere that there is still a driver behind the steering wheel just in case something goes wrong (ie. in Tesla's and Google's and other cars). I'm sure we'll get to a point where that's not necessary anymore, some time, but for now I believe it is recommended there is a driver in the car on the driver's seat and that you still pay attention to what happens. Which will be neccessary until the techology has grown enough that errors like this don't happen much anymore. I don't know what exactly happened in this case (as I haven't read any indept articles or anything), but I do believe the owner/driver should pay attention, until they recommend the cars can go without drivers. I personally won't be stepping in a self-driving car until it is considered safe enough to do so that there isn't a driver necessary (and of course, I have money for it). But when in the future it is considered safe enough, I think it'll be great for someone like me who doesn't drive. Until then I believe it is necessary for the driver to pay attention, just in case. The recent news here is about a Polish teenager who has been missing since Jan 11th. They found the body nearby here yesterday or the day before (in a field), this morning the news said he had been dead for several weeks . The newspaper said they have the autopsy scheduled for later today, to find out what the cause of death is. They don't think it was suicide, but what did happen to him, they are as of yet unsure of. It's also weird he left the house on Jan 11th, without his phone, wallet, clean clothes, etc. I don't know if it was murder or an accident on the road or what happened, but I find the whole thing very sad. He was 19 .
Madeleine
Seeing as technology can go wrong, I still wouldn't get in a driverless car! Watched an X Files recently where Scully was trapped in a driverless car....very prescient. They're talking about driverless trains again today as well. Athena
Isn't the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in London driverless? I've been on that. At least, I thought it was driverless. It always went well.
Madeleine
Yes it is but a lot of the time (I only use it occasionally but have noticed this) they do have someone on board.
