  1. Ooh, hurray for the new books. Pics, pics ! Which reminds me that I have pics to take, too.
  2. I know I've sometimes got more out of a cosy mystery than a fancy literary book ; if some situation has resonated with me and made me reevaluate something, then the book has real depth, never mind if it has talking cats. Btw, autocorrect just tried to write " fancy lit tart " book. Hee.
  3. This discussion has made me think about how much I've loved star trek over the years ; voyager having a female captain - the wonderful kate mulgrew - meant a lot to me. Fingers crossed that the new show creates some controversy, in a good way. Off to see which of the st people are on Twitter, etc.
  4. Just watched an ep of Beck, a Swedish crime drama. Pretty good.
  5. Is that the Margaret Rutherford film ?
  6. I saw that docu on SKY Atlantic ! Such an interesting and gentle man.
  7. Really ? I did not know that. Hmm. Couldn`t the designers have rummaged about for a newer design, instead of one they`d already rejected ??
  8. Yes, I think I was trying to be too polite. Some of the best ST eps changed minds, imo, so the trailer just doesn`t have that hopeful, wow factor.
  9. Star Trek Discovery - trailer. Hmm, not sure. It looks a bit clunky ?
  10. Xiao-Xiao`s just turned 5 ! Can`t believe that James is already that old. Once you get them both off to University, your reading will pick up again. Naughty Clara. Phew that she reappeaared. I`ve got The Shepherd`s Crown and the last Discworld still to read. I might read them this Xmas. Or just keep them for another year.
  11. Ooh, lots of books read. Shame there wasn`t anything that you thought was brilliant though. How`s the household doing ?
  12. Relief !
  13. Good grief ! It`s 27C now ; it did get up to 32C yesterday, but feels just as hot today - I`m guessing the house didn`t cool down enough overnight, so it feels hotter indoors. Xiao-Xiao`s outside, trying to catch a breeze. Fingers crossed for your animals !
  14. Ah yes - it was -20C here a couple of years ago, and, come to think of it, that was a tad chilly.
  15. Thanks. 29C now and supposed to get up to 32 C in a couple of hours ! Hope that you`re coping with the heat where you are.
  16. Boo. The idea of the books as a treat is a good one. Perhaps not the best time to point out that I don`t bother with anaesthetics at the dentist ; the drilling doesn`t bother me. Though I get all flustered and shaky if I need anything doing to my eyes. We`re all different, aren`t we.
  17. Sometimes, it`s not the quality of the writing so much as the storytelling power that makes it a good book, for me.
  18. Thanks. I`m still slightly migrainy, but not dizzy or sick, so that`s brilliant. I`m sticking to magazines and online articles - my attention span won`t cope with `proper` reading. I`m quite enjoying the weather now. A few days ago, the heating was on in the evening `cos it was chilly, so it`s quite a change to get up to 29C today. It`s much better for my back - the heat acts as a sort of loosener and it feels so much better.
  19. Good grief, 35C is really warm. We don`t have air cons, but Xiao-Xiao does have her own oscillating fan ( and we draw the curtains during the day, to help with the heat).
  20. I bought them every six months, or every year, so I`m not too aware of quite how much money they`ve cost...
  21. Great looking bookcases ! I have those complete peanuts too _ it'll be the full set by this October. Kate, is that called a jade plant in the US then ? I think it's a money plant over here.
  22. Ooh, I just kimpled that Claire north book this very afternoon ! It's like having my own reviewer.
