  1. On my TBR pile I have Extraordinary Engines - The Definitive Steampunk Anthology edited by Nick Gevers which looks a good a place to start as any.
  2. There is a long and mixed history of American adaptions of UK programmes and also vice versa http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_television_series_based_on_British_television_series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_US_television_series_remade_for_the_British_market
  3. At least it wasn't butchered as much as Red Dwarf
  4. I cannot stand the Creditexpert advert, more like smug g*t
  5. Now that is sad, if people at a college deem it useless to read what hope is there?

    Tattoos!

I have one on my upper right arm, its of a raven carrying a small bag which has split and a couple of runes are falling out.
  7. And don't forget some have an apendix as well.
  8. Lets not forget Terry Goodkind regards her as a genius. Which could explain some of his books.
  9. Beatles Laurel and Hardy or Chaplin
  10. You know what its like you hear a snatch of MINUET by Boccherini and all you can think of is the Ladykillers, those of us of a certain age if we hear music from the Ballet Spartacus we think of a large ship owned by the Onedin family. Hear the New World Symphony and think of brown bread, and who can hear the William Tell Overture without thinking HI HO SILVER AWAY!! What music do you associate with something completely different from the composers original intent?
  11. As someone studying science might I suggest you try The Strange Case of Mrs. Hudson's Cat: And Other Science Mysteries Solved by Sherlock Holmes by Colin Bruce An interesting look at physics though the medium of Sherlock Holmes.
  12. Plunket and Macleane Not exactly historically correct but good fun.
  13. My kids are watching Captain Mack so as I'm in the room with them I guess I am too.
  14. The first sci fi book I can remember reading was either Islands in the Sky by Arthur C Clarke or Space Family Stone by Robert Heinlein.
  15. Found this site which might help
  16. The advenures of Svlad Cjelli can be found in Dirk Gentley's Holistic Detective agency and the Long Tea Time of The Soul
  17. I have been a fan since the original radio series, have read most of the books but felt the tone changed and it seemed towards the end that he was just writing them to fulfill a contract. The Dirk Gentley books did seem a breath of fresh air, as though he was glad to be doing something else. I loved the TV series, and his Dr Who scripts, but don't get me started on the film, it didn't happen.
  18. I really miss Death Ray now that was a mag worth buying
  19. I'm sitting here with my three year old daughter watching Tom and Jerry. Time she was introduced to the classics.
  20. Of course it could be argued that if society bans books now because we don't agree with the views expressed what is to stop future societies banning what we regard as acceptable views? Or will we end up with an army of Winston Smiths' changing books to fit the official line? A sad fact is though it doesn't matter to a lot of people if racism exists in novels as they never read anything more challenging than Heat or OK.
  21. It was such a pity that Central TV couldn't see a future for this series. I guess there was no room for innovation and intellect in their programming.
  22. I suppose a book has to be examined with the period it was written taken into account. Some people have accused Lovecraft of racism in his writing, other people say he reflects the view of the time. I recently attempted to read a Fu Manchu book and couldn't finish it as the blatent racism in the story was a little hard to stomach.
  23. Of course Homo superior weren't they? Under a tube station iirc
