  1. I am more than halfway finished with The Eyre Affair, and I am so reluctant to say this, but I am not enjoying it. I will give my reasons why when I am finished. I get quite uncomfortable saying I don't like something, when so many others have enjoyed it, but I must be true to myself.
  2. Welcome to the forums. I just finished reading Jane Eyre for the first time a few days ago, and I thought it was an exquisite piece of literature. I wish I had read it years ago.
  3. I really did love it. I cried often while reading, and related to the character of Jane Eyre, who always stayed true to herself. This will be a book I read again someday.
  4. I love this show, although I may be biased, because I have the hugest crush on Hugh Laurie.
  5. You are all diabolical, tempting me with more books. You should be punished accordingly, with a life sentence devoted to the reading of more books. Yes, I may have to pass on Evanovich for the time being. We will see. And yes, my Bradbury library is quite large. Happy reading to you as well. Now I am really intrigued. I can't wait to start on this book. Just a few thoughts on Jane Eyre. The writing is simply gorgeous. I thought I would find it intimidating, but I fell into the book and the beautiful language almost instantly. It did drag a bit for me towards the middle, but once it got interesting again I had difficulty putting it down. A wonderful romance and tragedy, with a few unexpected twists. I don't plan to write a real review for this novel, as I will be discussing it with others in a few short weeks.
  6. I have finished Jane Eyre and will be starting The Eyre Affair later tonight. Yaaaay, me!
  7. I wish I could read that fast. It will take me a few days. :( And soon I will be reading my first Terry Pratchett book as well.
  8. I will let you know as soon as I read it. So little time, so many books!
  9. Part of me does not want to enjoy it then. I find, all too often, that if I like one book by an author, I want to collect everything else by him or her. You should see my Ray Bradbury, Patricia McKillip, Dean Koontz, Charles De Lint, and Robert J. Sawyer collections! They are huge, and every single one of them is still publishing new books.
  10. I am as well. I have The Glass Bead Game on my shelf to be read. Is Magister Ludi essentially the same book?
  11. Next ten books on my reading list: The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett One for the Money by Janet Evanovich False Memory by Dean Koontz Memory and Dream by Charles De Lint Birthday of the World and Other Stories by Ursula Le Guin Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad The Darkest Evening of the Year by Dean Koontz The Ivory and the Horn by Charles De Lint Solaris by Stanislaw Lem I am almost done with Jane Eyre and will give a few thoughts about it when I am finished.
  12. Interesting. Thank you both for the advice. The Eyre Affair it is, then.
  13. Hello and welcome to the forum.
  14. I have less than 100 pages left in Jane Eyre. I can't decide if I should read The Eyre Affair right away, or read The Color of Magic in between the two. Ah, what to do, what to do. The dilemma!
  15. I read Twilight and found it to be okay, and even found some deeper themes within it, although I can't remember what they are now. Then I read New Moon, and found nothing that made me want to read more.
  16. I am about half way done with Jane Eyre. I have no comments to make.
  17. I cry all the time, and I consider myself a strong woman. Crying is not a weakness, in my opinion. In a strange way, allowing yourself to sometimes be vulnerable when it is appropriate, takes great courage. I do love the Sword of Truth series, but it does have its flaws. Terry Goodkind can be too forceful in his approach to writing, and his characters are somewhat one-dimensional. But his books are page turners for me anyway.
  18. Favorite fantasy book is Little, Big by John Crowley with The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle coming in as a close second. My favorite fantasy series are Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogies and the two book Mordant's Need by Stephen R. Donaldson.
  19. Hmmm, thank you, Fi. Maybe I will give the first one in this series a try.
  20. There is one book I recall reading in one sitting, and that is Watership Down. I was 16 or 17 years old at the time, and a friend of mine was sleeping over. This was her copy of the book (I didn't have my own then), and while she lay there in the wee hours of the morn, oblivious to all but her dreams, my eyes devoured that book in about three to four hours. I had the nastiest headache afterwords, but it was a price well worth paying.
  21. Has anyone read the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich (I hope I spelled that correctly)? My mother and sister recommended these books to me, and I am more than a bit hesitant, as I generally read fantasy, sci-fi, and classics. I do sometimes like the comedic book, though. I love Douglas Adams, Christopher Moore, and Tom Robbins. So, how funny are the Stephanie Plum books?
  22. I hope you enjoy this one, a favorite of mine. I received a package today! It contained: Diary of a Madman and Other Stories by Nikolai Gogol Demian by Herman Hesse One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez Peace by Gene Wolfe Unfortunately, that's it for book purchases this year.
  23. It's been awhile since I have seen it, and I do like John Cusack, but I guess the film seemed sort of pointless to me. Bu then, maybe that was the point of the movie.
