  1. I enjoy a wonderful, thick, heavy tome now and then, especially if the story and characters speak to me and I don't want it to end.
  2. I just rewarded myself for getting a job and purchased 5 new books, and the total came to under $25.00. Here is what I ordered: Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky Dracula by Bram Stoker Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen I feel so guilty and happy all at once. :D
  3. I just started False Memory by Dean Koontz. So far, I am interested.
  4. I sometimes sell books I no longer want on Amazon, and I always underrate the condition. Of course, my feedback rating is 100% positive.:mrgreen:I wouldn't feel right selling someone a book that I felt was in poor condition. I won't lend my books to anyone except my boyfriend, and he knows better than to be careless with them. I won't challenge your supremacy, though. In every other way, you are the OCD queen of properly kept books.
  5. Normally, I do not like hand written inscriptions. However, a few months ago I had purchased a used copy of War For The Oaks by Emma Bull. I can't remember the price, but it was under $2.00. Upon opening the book, I found writing on the inside cover. At first, I was a bit upset about this. I like my books to be as near perfect as possible. However, looking closer at what was written, I got a pleasant surprise. This was the inscription: To Harry: With the very best of wishes. Emma Bull I was delighted to find this was a first printing of the book, and was actually signed by the author.
  6. The Book of Lost Things - John Connolly
  7. When you do get a copy and read it, Bookjumper, I would love to hear your thoughts. Patricia McKillip is my favorite fantasy author. If you get lost in her writing like I do, you will be happy to know that she writes single novels for the most part. I notice you prefer those to series.
  8. I had to put down One For The Money by Janet Evanovich. It's just not my style. I am not sure what I am going to read next. Must browse my shelves.
  9. Recently finished books and a few thoughts: The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde I don't want to say too much about this book, because we will be discussing it soon, and I want to keep a rein on my input until I hear what others have to say, because I may be missing something. It could be I just don't get the British humor (although I love Douglas Adams!) or it could be that because I have not read many of the classics, I would not understand the allusions. The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett This book started off well for me, but then the plot seemed to meander and lose its way. I still found it quite amusing, and will definitely be checking out more of the Discworld series. I have heard that it only gets better. My favorite characters were Rincewind and Death.
  10. :friends0:Panic attacks suck! I'm so sorry you get them like I do.

  11. I truly hope you enjoy this one. I adore Patricia McKillip's writing style. It's dreamy and poetic. I wish I knew better words to describe it, but the best I can think of to say is that I get lost in her worlds, and always feel a profound sadness when I have to come back to the real one.
  12. Finished The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett. It meandered a bit for me towards the end, and didn't seem quite as funny, but it was good enough to check out more in the Discworld series. I just started One For The Money by Janet Evanovich, and I am not impressed so far. I get all the New Jersey jokes, because I was raised there, but the humor is very low-brow and not to my taste. This may turn out to be one of those rare books that I will not finish. I will read at least 100 pages, though.
  13. I'm not sure if I agree with that quote. I often see rooms that are full of vitality and/or depth that don't have any books in them. I have always preferred this one: To read without reflecting is like eating without digesting. I can't remember who said this at the moment, but it seems a bit more apt to me.
  14. I don't feel so overwhelmed anymore.
  15. I searched through this thread, and didn't see this one mentioned, so forgive me if it already has. If you like fantasy, fairy tales, and also a book within a book, you should love Alphabet of Thorn by Patricia McKillip. The main character works within the royal library, translating ancient tomes until something odd happens...
  16. I also recommend Stardust by Neil Gaiman. I haven't read Neverwhere yet. Another excellent one is Tamsin by Peter S. Beagle. Everything by Mr. Beagle is wonderful, and another one you might try by him is The Last Unicorn, which can be for teenagers or adults.
  17. I am about 30 or so pages into The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett. Here are my thoughts:
  18. Hello and welcome to the forum.
  19. I just counted the books I own that I have not read yet, and it comes to 225. This is why I really should not be buying any new ones until I get through these. On the other hand, I own over 600 books, so at least I have more read than not.
  20. Hello, and welcome to the forum! A fellow Mozart and Dean Koontz fan, I see.
  21. I am not a huge Robin Williams fan, but this movie tore my insides apart. I know exactly how you feel. I will have to get my boyfriend to watch this with me sometime, as he has never seen it.
  22. Hello and welcome to the forum.
  23. The Man in the Iron Mask. I love this movie, in spite of Leonardo DiCaprio. My apologies to anyone that thinks he is a fine actor.
  24. Jambalaya! I love New Orleans style cooking.
  25. Please don't feel guilty! You did enjoy it, and of course, you want to share that. I am sure there will be books I enjoy that you won't, and I will probably feel guilty as well.
