Just finished up Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon Synopsis: "The year is 1772, and on the eve of the American Revolution, the long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, isolated cabins burn in the forest. With chaos brewing, the governor calls upon Jamie Fraser to unite the backcountry and safeguard the colony for King and Crown. But from his wife Jamie knows that three years hence the shot heard round the world will be fired, and the result will be independence

I'm not sure that you can make someone read. I always tell my boys that I did everything right when it came to reading to them and making story-time a priority when they were growing up. I read to them practically from the womb, we made regular trips to libraries and bookstores ....their book collection was ridiculous and I read to them every.single.night. until they were in their early teens. They loved story-time and looked forward to it everyday. Do either of them read now? Alas, ....no. Both took to sports and athletics. I can only hope that what I did during their early years will eventually rub-off and as they get older, I hope they rediscover the wonderful world of books.

I'm on the last 80 pages of Breath of Snow and Ashes. I'll finish it off this afternoon. Just in time too as I think the 7th book in the series An Echo in the Bone has just hit the shelves. -
Guess I'm pretty easy ....take me anyplace ....anywhere ....past, present, future, so long as it's interesting, I'll go along for the ride.

"Still, he would be torn, not wanting to leave us-and while any able-bodied man could always be of use on a homestead, he was by no means a natural farmer, let alone a gunsmith, like Manfred and his father. If he himself were to wed, though.... I gave Ute McGillivray a glance, and saw her watching Mr Wemyss and his inamorata with the contented expression of a puppet master whose puppets are dancing precisely to her tune." The Memory Keeper's Daugher by Kim Edward

I read this book in the spring and quite enjoyed it. A haunting tale of love, loss and secrets that span a lifetime. One decission ....and an entire life (lives) are altered forever. I agree with you Kylie. While I did enjoy the book, I found that I liked Caroline more than Norah. Her fast, aimless drives and the drinking issues that were never really resolved (was she an alcoholic, or not?) seemed off, somehow. Although, perhaps I'm too hard on Norah ....she was suffering from a loss; found herself stuck and unable to move past it. Caroline on the other hand, seemed more "real" to me. She had a 'daughter' to raise and made any necessary sacrifices to do the best job she could. Maybe it's just that I can relate to Caroline more than Norah. -
There are only a handful of people I will lend to and even at that, there are some books I just can't bring myself to lend out for fear of never seeing them again. As for borrowing ~ I have in the past, although it's not typical behaviour for me. I prefer to just purchase my own books or borrow from the library. I have a friend that's in a different bookclub than me and she has on occasion passed a book on to me to read. I always read these first and give them back immediately ....and I'm extra careful about handling them.

Often I make myself a list from reviews I've read in newspapers, magazines, a certain book forum or from friends.. and the next time I find myself in a bookstore or library, I investigate them a little further and choose from there. It's a rare day that I leave either the bookstore or library sans books.

Have you read a book in one sitting?

As a teenager I would read a book in one sitting now and again. Not since I grew-up though. -
For me it really depends on the type of stress or situation I'm experiencing. If I'm just escaping a frustrating day or haven't yet come to a conclussion or made a decission on something I need to,.. then escaping to another world for awhile really helps me to de-stress and untangle the confusion of thoughts rattling about upstairs. If the situation is more dire ....I'm unable to concentrate and stay focused.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only odd-ball But yes ....I should clarify. I DO in fact watch the Stanley Cup series as well as Olympic hockey games ....expecially if it's USA against Canada, that's always an exciting game.
-
Ahh .....I hope I don't offend the other Canadians here by not saying hockey is my favorite. Actually ....at my house, it's football. In fact, I went to a game this evening. Other than the rain that pelted us at half-time a good time was had by all. Of course it helped that we won!!

Um .... 44. You guys are lucky ....this is not something I advertise all the readily. Having said that, I do have to admit that I am enjoying my forties although, I am glad that most people don't think I look like I'm in my forties

I try to hit the gym everyday ....that's about as athletic as I get but my boys are very athletic. My oldest is a competative swimmer, in fact he just competed at the Canada Games last month and my youngest is the running back for his football team at high school.

My sons' and I read five or six books from the Series of the Unfortunate Events and as I recall, everyone enjoyed them. Not sure why they stopped reading them though. I'm guessing another series took over. I remember my youngest becoming a REDWALL nut at one point.....could be that these books bumped Lemony Snicket's books.
