  1. I've just finished The Reader and find the conversation going on here quite insightful and very interesting. This book is interesting. While I was reading it, I don't know that I ever felt "hooked" and certainly didn't find it an "easy pleasure", yet when I put it down, Michael and Hanna kept coming back to me and kept at me until I picked the book up again. Schlink's sparse and unemotional language gives me the impression of this being a biographical investigation, although quite likely, that was his intent. An aspect of The Reader is both its strength and its weakness. Either Michael or Hanna are illustrated all that well. As a weakness, it prevents readers from connecting with the characters as well as they could. As a strength, it allows readers to see both Michael and Hanna as representatives for their respective generations. They are not simply individuals here. They are symbols of Germany's Nazi past as well as its post-war struggles to come to terms with their actions.
  2. Continue with The Reader. I'm about half-way through
  3. Ooh ....this sounds very interesting, indeed. Great first sentence.
  4. When I was fifteen, I got hepatitis. The Reader ~ Bernhard Schlink
  5. Ooh ...I love House! He is such a ill-mannered, genious. Have you caught up yet, or are you still watching previous seasons?
  6. The unfortunate thing is that Owen Meany was the first John Irving (believe it or not ) novel I've attempted and now I'm hesitant to try another of his books. I will try another at one point, just not sure which one yet.
  7. Chicken breasts with a nice gravy, rice and corn. Cake for dessert.
  8. I will finish The Ghost at the table Today for sure, for sure. Only have about 30 more pages to read. Next up ....I think The Reader.
  9. Oh Ned ...that's awful. I can't believe that someone would just throw them out like that. And no sorry to boot. Reinforces my opinion of not being overly generous when it comes to lending out my books.
  10. Ooh, sounds good. Looking forward to your review.
  11. Congratulations on reaching your goal of 52 books ....very impressive! By the way ....loved your review of The Graveyard Book ~ Neil Gaiman. I will most certainly be putting this on mount TBR. Thanks for posting.
  12. You can never go wrong with George Orwell. Happy reading!
  13. Are you enjoying this one, Gyre? I'd love to hear your comments when your done. I like Murakami.
  14. The sun is finally shining? What so soon? :) :) That was a long haul for you guys, wasn't it? Glad to hear your day was good ....did you buy anything interesting on your shopping trip? I did a little shopping myself this evening. A co-worker is getting married in a couple of months and her social is tomorrow evening. A few of us girls from work are all getting together for supper and a drink before we head to the social and of course, I needed a new outfit for the occasion. :) Bought myself a new pair of jeans, a top and a sweater to go over it ....I think it'll look cute. Have a good night.

  15. It'll be pretty slack at my house tonight, I'm afraid. Probably KD and wieners
  16. Still reading The Ghost at the Table. I'm really dragging my feet with this one but not bacause it's a bad book .....just that I can't seem to sit still long enough lately to read anything. Hopefully this weekend will see it finished.
  17. Have fun shopping today Blithe. What movie are you going to check out? Sounds like your in for a very lovely day, indeed. :)

  18. Hi Blithe ~ Thank you so much for checking in on me. That makes me feel so good. :) All is well ...just in the midst of an unusually busy patch, for some reason. I've had something going on every evening this week. Seems I do nothing for ages and ages and then suddenly everything happens at once. Hope all is well at your end. Is it still raining in your neighborhood?

  19. If memory serves, I believe it was an ABBA album and yes ....on vinyl. Sue ...this should make you feel better. When we moved to the house in the country, my oldest was about 3 at the time. In the midst of all the boxes, he happened to come accross a couple of boxes with albums in it. He pulled one out and the conversation went something like this; Son: "What is this, Mommy?" Me - distracted: "Oh....that's just a record ....we'll find a place for them later." I continue emptying the box marked "misc" Long pause .... Son: "But ....what are they for?" Me: "Oh my God! That's right, you've never even seen one of these before!" It was the first time I realized that there truly is a whole generation between myself and my kids.
  20. Oh yeah ...totally forgot about this book. I read this as well as a kid and really enjoyed it.
