  1. I adore wandering through bookstores - second hand stores are the best, because all the books have that been here forever smell that's so very addictive. But books are so expensive when you buy new, so I prefer shopping online because it's so much cheaper. Also, online shops have a wider variety when it comes to bookcovers. I'm very particular about bookcovers. A good old-fashioned bookstore remains a huge temptation, though.
  2. I'm very much looking forward to this film. And am I the only one who wants to take Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter home for a little tea party? Which reminds me, I should give the novel another try. My boyfriend recommended the annotated version. I thought it was all random and somewhat confusing the first time I read it, but it seems that there's more to it.
  3. My grandmother's famous and very delicious fish and chips. And little corn puff thingies - don't know where granny got them, but they sure taste good.
  4. I'm just going to post this little guy because chesil said everything I wanted to. If you're a quitter, Bookjumper, then I must be one, too. I have quite a few impulsive book sale buys that I probably wouldn't have bought if it wasn't for a sudden "got to have books, now!!" that fluttered through my mind. Some of them I've started and liked and then got bored with and gave up on. Some I discarded after the first few pages. I don't feel guilty about them, though. They're just not my taste. Period. I'll take them over to the second hand bookstore once I have the time, and then they'll bring someone else a bit of reading pleasure.
  5. Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd caught my attention. It sounds like it could be an intriguing story. None of the others really interests me, though... Oh, I just noticed that you're reading it. Is it any good?

    Newbie!

Hello and a very warm welcome to you RCee!
  7. I haven't read this book. But I did recently read The Graveyard Book by the same author and I enjoyed that very much. Neverwhere seems even more imaginative, so I'd like to give it a try.
  8. I was googling some or other book title and instead found a forum.
  9. That is a very interesting "fact". Could it possibly be actually true, I wonder...
  10. No need to fear for your hats, as I believe I'll enjoy reading that novel very much. :D

    I hope you're having a lovely evening. :)

  11. Hello! Just thought I'd drop by and ask how you're doing. I hope you're enjoying the forum. :D Your current book, The Angel Experiment, sounds interesting...

  12. I'm going to jump back a page. I was wondering what your final thoughts on The Piano Tuner would be once you finished reading it and I have to say that I'm looking forward to reading it even more now that I've read your review of it.
  13. Rude people. I've had my fair share of dealing with them. Also, people who don't listen. We can hear fine, but listening is a bit of a forgotten art I think.
  14. On an evening in the latter part of May a middle-aged man was walking homeward from Shaston to the village of Marlott, in the adjoining Vale of Blackmore or Blackmoor - Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Thomas Hardy.
  15. My mojo is sort of there, again... I'm enjoying my current novel, anyway. I promised myself that I wouldn't buy any new books until I'm done with my TBR pile (and a pile it is!)... But for my birthday in August I'm treating myself to a few Agatha Christie novels and I'm looking forward to that so much that I'm feeling apprehensive about reading what I have available, now. I suppose in a way I'm killing my own mojo, aren't I... *sigh*
  16. I have been wanting to add something more spiritual to my reading, but I've been unsure about what exactly I'm looking for. But this book sounds very interesting and it may be just what I need. Thanks for the review, Kate. I think I'll give this one a try.

    Hello

We have a few things in common, there. I used to play piano, though... I gave up, because I had a really nasty music teacher. But, before I wander too far off-topic: Welcome to the forum! You'll love it here.
  18. I haven't read the books, but I'm joining the conversation because I've seen the films. I would love to read that fur-covered book that so viciously attacks everything if not handled with care. It would also make a very good pet and perhaps a good security system.
  19. Hello and welcome to the board! I'm sure you'll have fun here.
  20. I don't really pay attention to fanfiction... Simply because it usually goes the "will you end up with Draco or Harry"-way. I suppose there could be some good fanfiction out there... But I'm not really interested. *shrugs*
  21. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about Harry Potter. In my case, though, I think I jumped on the bandwagon a bit late and then got caught up in the movie hype, so perhaps I ruined the series for myself... *shrugs*
  22. I've decided to chop my bacon into bits and add it to a plate of pasta. Wanted to add cheese. Don't have any cheese. Really, really wants cheese, now.
  23. My favourite meal is pasta with loads of cheese and cheese sauce. Cream I also love - I sometimes eat it as a meal.
  24. Thus far, I am having bacon... I still need to decide on what to have it with.
  25. day I've read it and I highly recommend it. It's quite shocking and raw at times, though, but I don't think there's any other way to interpret what certain women did/went through during those terrible times. It's a very well-written novel that stays with you for quite a while after reading it. I love love stories set during wartimes. Or any book that gives an account of what people went through. Battle scenes doesn't very much interest me, I'm after emotion. Those Who Save Us (already mentioned), Love Without Resistance by Gilles Rozier, The Visible World by Mark Slouka and The Parrot Cage by Daphne Wright are among my favourites. Oh, and I almost forgot Atonement by Ian McEwan.
