  1. I've thought about the age difference, as well. Especially since I've been reading Midnight Sun. It's quite interesting how Meyer managed to convey Edward and Bella's different "voices" in her story telling. Bella may be mature, but she's still a teenage girl that's somewhat obsessed with her first love and her entire thought process revolves around him. I thought that Edward noticed more things than Bella did and that made his version of what happened so much more interesting. Also, even though he was often anxious in MS, I felt that his "voice" was much calmer and relaxed than Bella's. I don't know if anyone else felt that way, too. It made him feel older to me.
  2. Hello, Bethany. How are you, this evening? :D

I am reporting (listen to me sounding all official :P) with my thoughts on Death on the Nile. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It had a bit of a slow start, but I very soon found myself totally engrossed and once the actual investigation start it got even more interesting. I honestly had no idea who the culprit was! It was a very good read, though, and I absolutely recommend it. :D

    Take care,

    Scarlette

  3. I haven't read the entire draft, but so far I like Edward's version of events a lot more than Bella's, too. I think his view of things are just a tad more mature than dear Bella's.
  4. I second that. Unless you yourself knows what someone else is feeling, you really can't make a judgement on it or even really give advice, and a lot of people don't realize that.
  5. This reminds me of how much it bugs me when people think they know everything there is to know about the medical profession and start giving often misplaced medical advice when they hear someone has a problem. I have a rather painful back muscle problem and I've heard every possible crazy "cure" for it...
  6. I have this on my wishlist. I've recently become somewhat obsessed with Christie's work, so I will definitely be reading ABC Murders in the future. Right now, I'm reading Death on the Nile.
  7. The same thing happened when I visited a bookstore, today. There were plenty of books I wanted, though... It's just that I'm very, very broke and couldn't buy anything...
  8. I hardly ever suffer from headaches, but eversince I hurt my shoulder last Friday I've been having the most terrible headaches. They start in my neck and then goes right around my head. They're also worse in the mornings. When I wake up I can barely move my head, because it aches so much. It's really very unpleasant.
  9. *hands Scott a welcome cookie*
  10. Time limits are too stressful, and even when I do set them, real life tends to interfere with my reading time so I never stick to them. Leisurely reading is more my thing.
  11. I've never really shied away from any particular genre - although very gory novels tend to put me off right away. I've read a bit of everything from historical fiction to chick-lit to crime. There are a few genres I favour, but in general I'll read anything that appeals to me. I have to say, however, that as a teenager, I only read vampire and romance novels.
  12. I downloaded the partial manuscript of Midnight Sun from Meyer's website just now, so I'll be giving that a try as soon as I have it printed. EDIT: Oh, no! It can't print! *pouts* I really don't want to venture into the realm of creepy websites that might have a printable version, so I guess I'll be reading it on my dear ol' laptop.
  13. I have 16 books in my pile, now. Make that 18 - I just noticed two I started, but gave up on...
  14. Parents who can't control their children in public.... *sigh* I don't know who to be angry with anymore: the kids who jump on the shoe section's sofas, run around knocking things down, make attempts at undressing the dolls... OR the parents who sit by idly and watch their brats making my life miserable. And don't you dare talk to those kids. Oh, no, try that and you become the object of the Parental Glare - reserved for those who dare try to talk some sense into those perfect little angels.
  15. My first job was in a shop selling things for hosting parties - balloons were very popular, I remember, and people were picky about which one they wanted, too... I very much disliked that job. I was actually happy when they told me they really want someone who can work full time. I was studying at the time, so a full time job wasn't an option. I should have learned that retail isn't for me...but... somehow I'm still stuck in retail... I'm not particularly smart, am I?
  16. This has been a brilliant year so far - regarding literature, anyway. I have been reading a lot more than what I did this time last year. I think the main reason for this is that we now have a proper bookstore around where I live. Previously there was only the secondhand bookstore and the odd supermarket with a book stand - neither of which had a great variety of reading material in the past. That secondhand store has some very interesting finds these days, though. I've read many a brilliant book during this first half of 2009. The best two that comes to mind, now, are The Time Traveler's Wife and Falling (Olivia Liberty). I was very disappointed in Sunshine by Robin McKinley and The End of Mr Y by Scarlet Thomas, though.... I haven't started any reading challenges, but I did make a list of books I intend on reading before buying other books. I didn't quite stick to that... Which brings me to the fact that I have indeed bought waaaaay more books than I've read. I recently took a good look through my bookshelf and took quite a few novels to the secondhand store. Curse my impulsive booksale buys! I will behave better during the next six months... maybe... perhaps... we'll see....
  17. We have quite a few Scarlets on the board, now. Welcome!
  18. I'm quite looking forward to seeing the new Harry Potter film. I've never really had an interest in the books, but the movies keep me hooked.
  19. Welcome, Madelyn. I love your signature.
  20. I really disliked The Agony and the Ecstasy by Irving Stone. Yes, I know it's a classic and all that, but it bored me to death. I really had to trick myself into pretending to enjoy it. So, that's one I will never recommend to anyone else.
  21. I had a hot dog, followed by a cup of soup, followed by two very tiny apples.
  22. Hello and welcome! Hope you'll have lots of fun here.
  23. My bookshelf seems fairly balanced regarding the gender of authors. I tend to prefer books that tells a story from a male perspective, though. Or perhaps I just enjoy a masculine writing style. I seem to have very few books written in a feminine style.
