  1. Harry Potter, also. And The Reader, which is probably old news by now, but it's only just opened over here and I'm looking forward to seeing it.
  2. Hi Kate! *hands welcome cookies*
  3. I'm from South Africa, lived here all my life, never been anywhere else. I would love to visit England, though.
  4. I'm not that big on salad, because it's cold (I've never encountered warm salad before) and, unless it's fruit salad, it usually contains vegetables - which I'm not particularly fond of either... But I enjoy a nice big bowl of crated carrot (I firmly believe that carrots were mistakenly put in the vegetable category when veggies were created ), mixed with bits if pineapple and drenched in orange juice. That's a good salad.
  5. Curiouser and curiouser.... I thought this might be an early April Fool's joke, but they have a website and everything, even cover art in place... I'm not a fan of the Saga, even though Twilight itself is a very good stand alone novel, but I'm a little put off by this new development. I know, though, that this has happened many times before with other novels, so perhaps we're all feeling somewhat odd about this because the Twilight Saga is very new and it's author is still very much alive.. unlike Jane Austen and Lewis Carroll... *shrugs*
  6. Hello and welcome! I'm sure you'll have loads of fun here.
  7. I forgot to check back here... *blush* Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome! PS. Cluedo happens to be one of my favourite board games, so thank you so much BookJumper. And, yes, that was Edward Gorey Wilde Lily, but I was in the mood for change tonight.
  8. Thank you for your recommendation. I have not read Cry To Heaven, but will certainly put it on my to-read list, thank you. :)

  9. Thank you for your message. I apologize for replying so late. :)

  10. I don't listen to music all that often, but there are a few songs I could listen to all day long and they never annoy me: My December - Josh Groban It's Me - Chris de Burgh I Would Do Anything For Love - Meatloaf
  11. Catwoman was a very sad state of affairs... Adding to the list: Queen of the Damned Sin City (maybe I just don't appreciate gore) Oh, and Hairspray.. It was just... I don't know... :/
  12. The narrater (am I silly for being unsure of how to spell that word?) has a very raw, straight forward way of discribing things, that gets under your skin and draws pictures in your mind that you don't want to see... like page two... But, in the end I thought it was a very good novel, so I would recommend giving it another try. But, be warned, since you were already put off in such an early stage of reading it, that it there are more disturbing things to come.
  13. I am very, very late to find this thread, but since The Historian is one of the few books you guys mention on the forum that I have also read, I will give my opinion. I remember before buying this book on a whim, my boyfriend once mentioned it to me saying that it was very long and drawn out and he didn't like it at first but later changed his mind. Also, I was very surprised when I discovered what the book was actually about. Anne Rice was my introduction to vampire novels, and the Historian is very far removed from Rice's romantic vampire world. I was pleasantly surprised as The Historian did actually manage to scare me, draw me into the characters' struggle and adventures and weave a very captivating story all at once. In short, I adored this novel. I read Dracula afterwards and found it just a little bit boring, to be honest.
  14. I saw this book at a bookstore the other day. I haven't decided if I'd like to give the author another chance, though. I was very disappointed in her other novel, The End of Mr. Y. Will think about trying out PopCo, though...
  15. Yes. Love Without Resistance by Gilles Rozier (translated by Anthea Bell). It was quite a short novel, though...
  16. Series books can go either way. I am currently reading Pratchett's Discworld novels - in no particular order - and I'm enjoying them very much. I haven't found any one of them disappointing, thus far. I've read Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and, although I found the majority of the series very captivating, I was somewhat disappointed with the final book in the series: Blood Canticle. Thought she could have done better with that one... Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga was... disappointing, also. I felt that her imagination ran a bit wild after the second novel. Too much of a good thing, as the saying goes...
  17. I am guilty of judging books by their covers. Although I will buy any book (no matter the cover) when it comes to my favourite authors. My habit of wanting to own pretty books have resulted in buying a few novels with beautiful faces, but nothing between the ears... so to speak... I've found, though, that for those of us wanting to own the most eye-catching version of any book, online shopping is best. Bookshops are a treat to visit, but they don't always have a wide variety available when it comes to cover art.
  18. I think one of the most disturbing book I've read in recent years is most definitely Falling by Olivia Liberty. I will only say that it is the story of a man mourning a lost love affair... Or that's what you think it's about until you reach the very last page... If you've ever been left by someone you loved and considered going stalker on them in order to win them back, you could probably relate to the main character in this novel. Oh, but it's not really a novel about stalking, either... Also, Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum will make your skin crawl simply because it describes some of the most terrible things people can do to eachother and themselves during times of war. Survival of the fittest, I suppose... I recommend both.
  19. Hello and welcome! *hands you welcome cookies*
  20. Tee-hee... Cookies are my secret weapon....
  21. The only place I'm able to read is in a bedroom. It doesn't have to be my own, as long as it has a bed and it's really quiet. I find other places too distracting when it comes to reading.
  22. Ah, the TBR pile.... *glances at it and winces* I have recently developed the terrible habit of buying new books even though I have several - read 10 - that I haven't yet read. Which only results in the pile getting bigger and myself getting more anxious about making time to actually read them. But, before I digress too very much: I generally pick whatever catches my fancy at first glance. Also, I am guilty of judging books by their covers, so that's one of the methods I sometimes use to decide which of the pile I'll read first.
  23. Thank you everyone! I feel badly, because I've been slightly distracted by this thing that goes by the name of "real life" - dreadful, may you never encounter it - and I've forgotten to check back here. But a great big thanks to everyone for the warm welcome! *gives cookies*
  24. Thank you!
  25. The Feast of All Saints, by Anne Rice. Long book. Small font. It has become my in-between-other-books book. I've skipped to the end twice, felt guilty and circled back to where I last left off. The shame.
