  1. I got three more Rivers of London graphic novel volumes - 'Detective Stories', 'Water Weed' and 'Cry Fox'. Loved the first three, and got these at a nice price too. Looking forward to sitting down with them one quiet afternoon. Remembered that I read and enjoyed/endured 'We Need To Talk ABout Kevin' by Lionel Shriver. Powerful stuff, and one that stayed with me. I found it emotionally reminiscent of Doris Lessings 'The Fifth Child' in parts. Well written and it avoided being cliched or directional. I STILL don't properly know what I think about it!
  2. No idea! I haven't kept up with my log this year, and have had stops and starts in my reading. All I know for sure is that it's more than 36 - that's the books I did record in my log plus the one I have read recently. What's a bit of a surprise is that not knowing isn't bothering me in the slightest, although I will attemot to keep a record here on in.
  3. Having read and enjoyed Justin Cronin's 'The Passage' I have moved onto the second of the trilogy 'The Twelve'. I was slightly dreading this read, as the middle book of a trilogy can sometimes feel like a bridge between one and two, rather than a solid read of it's own. Happily I can report that I have been pleasantly surprised, it has already startled and delighted (if that's the right word for the subject matter) me. A brief dart away read took place on Christmas Day when I read Jodi Taylor's short story, 'And Now For Something Completely Different' from her Chronicles of St Mary's series. A wonderful and satisfying treat.
  4. Glad that it's easing for you Brian. Lovely quiet Christmas day, good nosh, lots of laughter, and a warm snuggly (a.k.a. over filled) feeling.
  5. Just indulging in a puff pastry mince pie, chased down with a mug of tea.
  6. Merry Christmas to you all. I hope everyone has been enjoying a lovely day. Ours has been quiet and cosy. Just saw this Brian, I hope you are feeling better.
  7. I am still reading my way through Justin Cronin's 'The Passage' . It is a long ol' journey, but I am enjoying the ride. Looking forward to going forward with the two further books of the trilogy.
  8. No decorations up yet. Husband is away for work, so will wait until he is home. We don't do much decor wise, although we lots and lots of lights, as husband has developed a habit of buying them when they are on sale after each Christmas. We are at home this year, dropping in on relatives for coffee and mince pies, but spending most of the day just the two of us.
  9. Currently reading The Passage by Justin Cronin. A really absorbing read, so I am glad I already have the two further books in the trilogy.
  10. For a while now Justin Cronin's Passage Trilogy of books have been available (individually) for 99p each on Amazon UK. The three are 'The Passage', 'The Twelve' and 'The City of Mirrors'. In addition, the first book in Jodi Taylor supernatural thriller series, 'White Silence' is also currently 99p on Amazon UK

I am having no problems with the ads - they aren't intrusive when I am using my laptop (my preferred and most frequently used method), and I have been able to ignore the ones that have come up. A thank you from me too. It is appreciated.
  12. Like Raven, I have only caught the first couple of episodes. I enjoyed both and look forward to seeing the rest. I had expected the first episode to be quite plodding and formulaic, but was pleasantly surprised that it was a 'proper' story, and not just a vehicle to push new characters at the viewer.
  13. Lovely news. Great stuff Hayley.
  14. Congratulations! A decade eh? Holy macaroni. It would be 10 for me in December. That's a whole chunk of life for us.
  15. That is truly delightful of you muggle not. The same to you and yours, for 2018 and beyond!
  16. Yep, the in-between bits did get tedious, but I did enjoy the story of it . 'Rose' may or may not have been acquired!
  17. Steven Moffat's Doctor Who - The Day Of The Doctor is £1.99 on Amazon UK at the moment. Have started reading it, and am enjoying it, so can recommend for Whovians.
  18. Sorry P, I only just saw this! I loved the Hanging Tree, and I have read and enjoyed 'Black Mould', 'Night Witch' and 'Body Work'. I wouldn't consider myself to be a huge fan of graphic novels, but these I thought captured the 'spirit' of the books well I thought. When the others come up at a good price I will get them. Maybe this is a sign of me being converted to GN's !
  19. Very sad news. Saying goodbye to those who won't be joining the FB group is so tough. Thank you to everyone, from Michelle through the Admins & Mods to all the BCF members past and present. It has been wonderful to have been a part of the forum. For those of you who will not have further contact. Thank you for becoming such a positive part of my life. Live well, laugh long and may your years be filled with peace and happiness. Enjoy your reading. I shall think of you often.
  20. Today on Kindle Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series are on special offer. I can thoroughly recommend them! Amazon UK 99p Amazon.com $1.42
  21. For anyone who enjoyed the Gateway Trilogy (Spirit Legacy, Spirit Prophecy & Spirit Ascendancy) by E E Holmes, her sequel trilogy of Gateway Trackers ; Whispers Of The Walker, Plague Of The Shattered, & Awakening Of The Seer are available today (UK) for 99p each (£2.97 for the three).
  22. Thank you all. I am reading without rules, lists, challenges or direction. It's been working well for my fickle reading mojo, so I am sticking with it. The pleasure I get from perusing all the lists and challenges for 2018 that many have put up is immense. There are so many clever and organised people on here. It's good to 'know' you all.
  23. To all visitors to my (often) sluggish book thread. I hope you all enjoy a wonderful reading year in 2018.
  24. Some people? Lol. Yeah - me.
  25. No, I believe that if you had reached the decision that an axe murder was necessary, then you would commit yourself 100% to it - none of this wobbly angst! 41) Rivers Of London by Ben Aaronovitch 42) Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovitch 43) Whispers Underground by Ben Aaronovitch 44) Broken Homes by Ben Aaronovitch 45) Foxglove Summer by Ben Aaronovitch 46) Rivers of London ; Body Work by Ben Aaronovitch, Cartmel, Sullivan, Guerrero (Graphic Novel) Recently I bought the latest book in the series, (plus the next two graphic novels, Night Witch and Black Mould). I first read the series in May (page two on this thread) last year, and wondered if I would enjoy them as much this time around. I need not have worried. Such good writing, great plots and characters. Each book tells a really inventive story, while an arc effortlessly stretches across the books. I love London based stories - especially ones that look at London in a quirky way (Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere springs to mind), and Mr Aaronovitch manages to often make his locations another character of sorts in the books. I plan on reading the two graphic novels before I move onto the latest by him, The Hanging Tree.
