  1. ^ Ditto what Janet said about what Chesilbeach said!
  2. OK OK, I'll get dusting!! See you there RoxiS.C!
  3. If I can figure out my newish camera, and then work out uploading pictures - I will actually dust the shelves, take a pic, and post it here!
  4. Hiya Sarah! I see you're reading from Manda Scott's Boudica series - what do you think of it?
  5. Oooh I love jacket spuds - one of my fave comfort (and otherwise) foods.
  6. Chish 'n' Fips! A van visits the village tonight...yippeee!
  7. I take notes when reading a 'heavy' book. It's a habit I picked up at uni, and keeps my thoughts together. Easy reads I tend to just get on with it.
  8. But aren't these ladies of a certain age liberated by their tenna lady pads, in the same way that rollerblading, white jeaned athletic dog walkers were liberated by tampons/towels/wings/whatever?!!
  9. A spot on review! My first ever Discworld book was Equal Rites - and I was instantly hooked! It holds a special place in my affections as my intro novel to the fantastic world of Mr Pratchett!
  10. I hate that there are so many reality programmes around now. Where's the novelty factor? There doesn't appear to be anything new to see. I additionally feel manipulated by these programmes, by their editing, their revealed 'secrets', behind the scenes shows etc. And don't even get me started on the participants sob stories. I have infinite compassion for the tragedies and horrble situations that people can face in their lives and I don't think that people should hide away their life's truths. I do however, feel nauseous to see them being triumphantly pushed to the fore by the programme makers who seem to celebrate that a contestant has a 'good story'.
  11. Would it be 'stream of conciousness'? I haven't read The Reluctant Fundalmentalist, I await your review!
  12. It is one of those questions that I cannot answer with a proper statement, it is more a case of "Name a book, and I'll tell you if it's a classic!" (and that answers nothing!) I define a classic by the ongoing devotion to it from readers, by the influence it had on the thinking of the time, either through content or style. Can a classic be defined by it's publication date? I'm not sure, Hemingway was Echo's example, another could be George Orwell, who published Animal Farm & Nineteen Eighty Four after World War Two. I'm going to be pondering this one now!
  13. Inner picture - yep that's definitely the term! So many factors come into play when we are reading, the characters can become any shape, size, colour, colouring etc, despite the best efforts of the author! We all make and have a first impression of others, and we make rapid judgements about their character when we meet, despite what they may actually be like. It's just in reading I form the physical from what is given about their personalities and actions.
  14. It's great that so many people have the idea for making their own bookmarks! I know it's probably no great shakes for those who do make their own, but I get limited inspiration whereas others have the fabulousness of having a creative/artistic mind. When I do get inspired I then have to deal with 'translating' the idea into reality! And Hi petit_canard, thanks for the pm!
  15. This sounds like an intriguing read! I will look out for this one, thanks for the review chesilbeach!

    Aloha!

    Hiya Prozackitteh!
  17. Agree with this. I was a huge fan and have felt almost let down by the more recent books. It is not just the viewpoint though; there's a weird paranoia thing going on with the characters. I have also felt that the 'big bad' character in each book is now both notorious and fame hungry rather than 'just' murderous.
  18. Salmon with new potatoes, broccoli and runner beans. I won't mention the mini (tiny pot) raspberry trifle that fell into my basket at the shops! OH is away tonight so I am treating myself!
  19. Absolutely! The hobbits were great, Gandalf was fab, but my goodness.... Aragorn! I hated the casting of the film 'Bonfire Of The Vanities' ny Tom Wolfe. It was totally miscast with Tom Hanks and Bruce Willis - they may have been better off swapping roles!
