  1. I guess it's a way of differentiating readerships and getting a 'clean slate' for each... And in some cases it can help the author to branch out. Take J.K. Rowling. It has been widely speculated that if she writes other books, in very different genres, she'll do so under a pseudonym. Because otherwise people would only ever see her as the author of Harry Potter trying herself out at crime fiction (for example). I think in her case it's necessary if she wants her new books to be judged fairly and not as "nice, but really we'd prefer HP8!" But it sucks! Because then how will we know what her other books, which I'm sure will be as great as HP, are? I'd be very curious to see what she can do in other genres... *pouts*
  2. Good luck with it Chrissy! Might I second that? Amazing book! I hereby vow that I'll finish my current book, Lipstick and Loopholes in Tehran, by tomorrow at the latest! Time to force in line that lojo of mine...
  3. Sorry Ben, I just tried to watch them but my internet connexion is dragging it's feet I'll be back when it stops acting up!

*cracks up* Honestly, how many books with that exact same title have you read by now?? Ah well, good for you if it's made your day! Though I got super excited myself last week when I found out there are lots of conferences and 'open' classes on cross-cultural topics happening near where I live, so... *cracks up*

And yes, baby steps are a good way to proceed.

Yeah, and look how well that turned out! *cracks up* Just kidding! I'm... well I'm working, seeing friends, watching the latest movies (have you seen Le Petit Nicolas? I know, I know it's for kids... but it's also one of our cultural monuments... and great fun!), resurecting my blog, procrastinating my job search (a real, long term job just seems too scary *pouts*)... Just generally enjoying having everything right next door for a change.

oooh that does sound exciting, in ii land ;) Was it part of any grand scheme to land your dream job, or just for the fun of talking hockey?

  6. I saw Mary and Max last week, which was excellent! Highly unusual and very sad but very well done.
  7. Chimera

Hey! Thanks! It's good to have a sense of normalcy again, temporarily at least *laughs*

I'm good, fully settled in my new flat, which I love, and enjoying the real parisian life (as opposed to suburbs), which I'd vowed I would avoid like the plague *cracks up* Oh, and being free of any school assignement of course. That is a definit plus!

I have TBR books spilling from virtually every inch of my 16m2 flat at the moment, but I'll be sure to check Toews' other books at some point.

What about you? How's the internship and decorating going?

    *kisses*

  8. I's actually very simple on the internet as most shops will take any card and then it's just a bank transaction where the currency is automatically converted. But you need to check whether your bank will charge you for this. I used to order a lot from The book depository, as it's so cheap and postage is free, but then I noticed my bank was charging me significant amounts for the euro to pound transaction. So I switched to Play.com which also has very low prices and free posting, and as a bonus offers to pay in pounds OR in euros (no currency change on my side then). So I'd just check your bank's policy if I where you.
  9. I bought and started Lipstick and Loopholes in Tehran by Nahal Tajadod yesterday, got Second Class Citizen by Buchi Emecheta, The last Patriarch by Najat El Hachmi and Les Clandestins by Jean-Luc Porquet from the library today and barely resisted buying/ getting a dozen more books in both cases... Not sure whether my reading mojo is back yet but my picking out books frenzy certainly is
  10. That really made me laugh. I'll have to check some of his videos out.
  11. Great topic! It ties in with a challenge I set myself a while back: to view the disney classics, read the books behind them and see how they compare. Unfortunately I haven't gotten very far yet but it generated discussion with other members here and I put together a list of references. You can find it in this thread. I don't have much time now, but I'll be sure to come back and leave my thoughts.
  12. Glad you both enjoyed it! Kimmy, I sooo agree with you. What did you think of the ending? *shudder* and mine are watch-desperate-housewives.com
  13. Yay for you Giulia! A great start to your meeting authors quest
  14. Goody! I want to know what you guys think of it
  15. Well it was on in the states last night and since in France we only get them 1 or 2 years later, in french, I tend to watch the original version through other means But for season 5 you were only a week or two behind, no? So I'm guessing you'll get it very soon in the UK. Sorry if that's wrong and I've given you a false joy...
  16. Just watched the first episode of season 6... all I can say is OMG !! I was disapointed by season 5 but this one is off to a terrific start Terrible as well unfortunately... Can't believe they did what they just did.
  17. Wow, you've certainly tickled my mojo with these reviews! Congrats on finding yours once more... May you finish lots of other wonderful books in the weeks to come!
  18. *hands over cookies to all who've lost their mojo* Old favs can indeed do the trick... or if you tend to always read the same kind of book, maybe something radically different? It might startle your mojo awake. I haven't read much lately either, but that's my fault really: I haven't been making time for it.
  19. Wonderful movie! Was it the first time you saw it?
  20. Granted... But all public transport has stopped due to an accident. You have to walk 3 hours to get home. I wish all my friends lived in my city.
  21. How's that a downside ??? Dimitra - granted! (unfortunately you missed the anouncement and got locked in) I wish it was summer again!
  22. Sorry, we haven't uploaded any yet... Yes january is going to be something else! I can't wait to see what's in store for us (well, mostly my brother... he's the one who'll have to go round the fire and whatnot *evil grin*)

Glad to know Shenzhen was fun... Have a wonderful time in Thailand! Manhattan? That sounds interesting! have you lived there before? Are you looking forward to it?

  23. Really? What didn't you like about it? Oh do pick up the book sometime, and let me knwo what you think of it
  24. I continued this challenge with The Jungle Book... Unfortunately that was several weeks ago and I didn't think of putting down my thoughts at the time but here's the general idea: I loved the book: the story but also the way it's told, the atmosphere created by Kipling, the way in which it isn't (unlike the film) completely cotton wooled: the heroes aren't always heroic and the law of the jungle is harsh. I knew the story of Mowgli of course - who doesn't? - but didn't remember the details and didn't know the other wonderful tales included in the book. I particularly enjoyed Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and Toomai of the Elephants. The film by comparison was a great disapointment! It felt like Disney turned a layered tale in a complete joke... Baloo and Shere Khan in particular are made to look like complete idiots. And it doesn't really reflect the story either: it only pictures one big funny journey through the jungle. A nice, feel good film for kids but nothing to match the original book! All in all... That's a resounding loss for Walt... But I've (re)discovered a wonderful book! Disney - 1; Originals - 1 Next up, probably Alice in Wonderland.
  25. Thanks Janet, it was a great day! I hope you had a great We as well!
