  1. David Attenborough's prog Life in Cold Blood The Choir Trial and Retribution The Bill (always) Casualty
  2. We are having our main meal at 1.30 today because we are going out tonight to see Chris Barber and his big Band with friends. Its grilled salmon with veg.
  3. I have to admit I wasnt too impressed with it either:blush: I dont think it works with a woman in a similar part to Sam Tyler somehow. I know I was sitting there thinking "what is this rubbish!!! Still give it a couple of weeks I suppose.
  4. I saw the film yesterday and it is exactly as you have described the book. I was very moved and at times horrified. The child actors are superb and very natural. All the other actors, whom I presume from their names are either Afghans or Pakistani, played their parts very convincingly too. Nothing was overdone, mostly understated and some things left to your imagination, nothing graphic. I hope it receives loads of awards. I must read the book now
  5. I read this book last year and loved it. I thought I had mentioned it at the time!!?? I have had 2 labradors in my time, the first was a lot like Marley and the second was completely adorable and biddable and even the vet cried when he had to put him to sleep. Although it is now 10 years since I lost him, I still cry when I think of his last day. Both dogs died in my arms and so peacefully it makes me wonder why we dont let humans go that way. I wish I could have another labrador, but they are too strong and would send me flying now that I am in my 70s. I never walk past one in the street and get thoroughly licked and greeted when I say hello to them. Adorable wonderful dogs.
  6. Did anyone answer my question about "grits" cos I cant find it if they did:blush:
  7. Try the Sainsbury one then, its delicious!! What do you expect of Tesco's anyway:mrgreen:
  8. Oh come on Paula you have to pick the right make!! Tesco and Sainsbury's do lovely low fat curry sauces and even the bog standard curry sauce in the "basics" range is lovely and it is also less than 5g fat. We have spag bol tonight.
  9. I am finding Suite Francaise a little slow, but the terror of that time has been captured well. I am filled with admiration with the translator of this book as well. To change a book from one language to another is a talent indeed, but to then capture the author's insight and the vivid descriptions is very impressive.
  10. Never mind Gyre, its not everyone's cup of tea. Its either love or hate and I love them all. Maybe Pride and Prejudice will appeal more???? Hope so
  11. I have always been interested in Jack Kennedy and have 2 books about him, one is called "One Brief and Shining Moment" andthe other was written by William Manchester called "Death of a President". Titanic has always had a "pull" for me as well. When I saw the last film on her, the romantic story they invented passed me by, it was the ship that I focussed on and at the end when the credits were going up I just sat there mesmerised with a feeling of deep deep sadness. (I know I am very soppy)
  12. Has anyone discovered the wonders of Iceland?? Good value and excellent quality. The fish is really good. For instance whilst Tesco and Sainsbury's white fish fillets (cod, haddock, etc) they only offer pieces of fillet, at Iceland, you get 4 whole fillets for
  13. Baked potato , grilled sole fillet, broccoli, carrots and peas
  14. Nooooooo! just great minds think alike, specially in families and between mum and daughter
  15. Please Muggle explain to me what "grits" are? I have never fathomed that out.
  16. Dont know yet because OH is cooking it. Smells like lamb Yum yum
  17. I loved Sense and Sensibility, it was my second reading, the first being many years ago. I found the characterisation absolutely brilliant and I love immersing myself into the language of Jane Austen. Its another world. I think Elinor was my favourite character, she was so intelligent and introspective. It amazed me how she accepted her fate to lose Edward, and also how she kept her reserve when dealing with Lucy's provoking comments. But she won her man in the end as in all romantic stories with happy endings. Am doubtful about Marianne's suddenly falling in love with Colonel Brandon though, although I suppose she had little alternative in those days. IThe story plot is quite similar to Pride and Prejudice - 2 sisters, a gossipy old woman, a young blackguard. I am now looking forward to reading Pride and Prejudice for about the third time.
  18. Thanks for your comments ladies. I may go back to it, but for the moment I have moved on to Suite Francaise.
